GOVERNOR.
Application filed September 28,1920. Serial No. 413,356.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the'county of 'Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates particularly to a governor which will control a double engine having its cranks set at the usual inclination. With such an engine it is desirableto have both valves controlled by the same governor mechanism so that there may be a nicety and uniformity of control.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the engine.
Fig. 2 a side elevation of the governor.
Fig. 8 a section on the lines 3-3'3 in F ig. 2.
Fig. 4 a section on the line 1-4 in Fig. 2.
Theengines 1 and 2 have a common crank shaft 3 with cranks 4 set at an angle to each other, commonly an angle of ninety degrees. A fly wheel 5 on the crank shaft forms a carrier for the governor. The valve mechanisms of these engines are controlled by the eccentrics 6 and 7. It will be understood that any valve gear may be supplied which is capable of receiving its motion from a crank or eccentric, such as 6 and 7 A Weight arm 8 is mounted on a shaft 9 being locked with the shaft by a key 10.' The weight armhas the weights 11 and 12 and one end' of the arm is connected with a spring 13 by a link 14. The spring is mounted on a bracket 15 having the usual spring adjustments 16. The eccentric 7 is secured to the weight arm by screws 17 and the eccentric is counter-balanced by a weight 18. So far the governor follows the form of construction illustrated in the patent to Shepherd, No. 529,507, dated connected to an arm 26*by a pin 25. The arm 26 extends from an eccentric carrier 27 which is pivotallymounted on a pin 28, the bearing being provided with the rollers 29 to reduce friction; The pin 28 extends through thehub and is secured thereinby a cap screw 30 and the eccentriccarrier 27 issecured on the pin by a plate 31', the plate being secured tothe end of the pin by screws 32. An arm 33 extends from the eccentric carrier to the eccentric'(). A weight 34 is provided for counter-balancing the eccentric 6. The eccentric 6 has an opening 34 which permits the swinging of the eccentric across the shaft in the usual manner and the eccentric 7 has an opening 36 for the same purpose.
In the operation of the device it will readily be seen that with the swinging of the weight arm under the influence of centrifugal force and inertia the motion is communicated to the eccentric 7 in the usual manner and at the same time the motion is communicated through the shaft 9 to the rock arm 21 and through the link 23- to the arm 26 and in consequence to the eccentric 6. By following the movement itwill readily be seen that as the center of the eccentric 7 is carried toward the center of the shaft the eccentric 6 is similarly carried toward the center and conversely when the eccentric 7 moves outwardly the eccentric 6 is also carried outwardly. In this way it will be seen that the valve gears for two engines having their cranks set at an angle may be moved in exact conformity with each other and in response to the action of a single governing mechanism. The mounting on the shaft and in the carrier is simple and rugged and inasmuch as the pulsations on the governing mechanism from the valve gears are at different intervals overnin wei hts of suflig e cient power to handle one of the engines will be suflicient to handle both engines.
While I have shown eccentrics moving across the shaft I do not wish to be limited I to eccentrics or cranks of such dimension.
Any eccentric or crank capable of producing the requiste reciprocating or swinging motion suitable for the valve gear will satisfy the purpose.
It Will be noted that the angular inertia force and centrifugal force of this governor act in harmony, that is to say, not only does the centrifugal force tend to regulate the speed but the angular inertia of the weights also tends to regulate the speed so that these two forces both operate together.
What I claim as new is 1. In an engine, the combination of a crank shaft; two cranks on the crank shaft arranged in angular relation; two eccentrics one having operative relation to each crank respectively; a governor sensitive to centrifugal force and angular inertia; and connectionsbetween the governor and eccentrics moving said eccentrics toward and from the axis of the shaft in unison.
2. In an engine, the combination of a crank shaft; two cranks on the crank shaft arranged in angular relation; two eccentrics one having operative relation to each crank respectively; a governor carried by the crank shaft'said governor being sensitive to centrifugal force and angular inertia; and connections between the governor and eccentrics moving said eccentrics toward and from the axis of the shaft in unison.
3. In a governor, the combination of a carrier; a governor weight mounted on one side of the carrier; an eccentric carried by and fixed relatively to theweight and at the same side of the carrier; a shaft secured to the weight and extending through the carrier; a rock arm on the shaft; a second eccentric mounted on the opposite side of the carrier and having a movement toward and from the axis of the carrier at an angle to the movement of the first-mentioned eccentric; and means for communicating the movement of the rock arm to the second eccentric whereby the two eccentrics move toward and from the axis of the carrier in unison.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT C. STEVENS.
