CHAMBER FOR DRY COOLING OF COKE.

Be it known that I, ARNOLD Monrrnni, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at and whose post-office address is Oberwinterthur, Romerstrasse 21, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chamber for Dry Cooling of. Coke, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a chamber for the dry cooling of coke by means of a gaseous cooling agent forced through the coke, and consists in the bottom part of the chamber which receives the coke and can be gradually discharged being formed of two hoppers disposed axially in respect of the chamber. The lower hopper is provided with a discharging device and the gaseous cooling agent is forced through the coke from the space provided between said hoppers, for the purpose on the one hand of preventing by the provision of the annular pace a choking of the piping admitting the cooling means, and on the other hand of efi'ect-ing a uniform passing of the cooling gases through the coke over the whole cross section of the chamber, and furthermore of allowing the chamber to be discharged by layers.
The discharging device provided at the lower hopper may be equipped in a known manner with two or more slides disposed horizontally and symmetrically to the axis of the hopper, which slides always assure the released opening being central. Furthermore a checking member may be provided in the chamber, which will prevent, during a partial emptying of the chamber, the coke situated in the center from dropping down faster than the rest, for the purpose of preventing a premature discharge of hot coke from the upper layers. Arrangements of this kind are known per se.
One mode of construction according to the invention is shown in the drawings. Fig. 1 is a section through the chamber.

a is the cooling chamber receiving the coke. By opening the discharge opening 6 provided at the lower part of the chamber and capable of being closed, the cooled coke is discharged into a truck (not shown) placed below said discharge opening.
In order on the one hand to obtain a thorough and uniform passing of the cooling gases through the coke and on the other hand to prevent the coke from entering the gas admission pipe, the bottom part of the chamber according to the invention is constructed as a double hopper 0, and from the annular space cl situated between said hoppers the cooling agent is forced through the coke in the direction of the arrow.
The cooling of the coke thereby progresses from the first-cooled bottommost layer of coke upwards, layer by layer, and in such a way, that the lower layers are already cooled, while the upper layers are still. in an incandescent state. The cooled coke may be withdrawn from. the chamber gradually, and in consequence it i possible to charge the chamber gradually with fresh coke.
Since the column of coke standing vertically over the discharge opening tends during the discharge of the coke to pass to said discharge-opening faster than the other part of the coke, and when gradually discharging the chamber a mixing of the still incandescent coke with some of the cooled coke would consequently take place, a plate f secured to a cross 6 is provided in the present case overjthe discharge opening 6 in order to allow of a progressive and smooth discharge.
For the purpose of keeping the discharge opening even in the case of a partial open ing, always vertically below the said plate, there are provided in the discharge opening, apart from an air-tight closing sliding-door 9, also two forked slides h, which may be adjusted. by means of a screw spindle 2' provided with two opposite threads in such a manner, that the said slides in any position remain symmetrical to the axis of the receptacle or chamber.
The door 9 is movable on rollersk along rails Z whereby the rails for the purpose of pressing the door tightly to the opening of the chamber are pivotally mounted at m and can be vertically adjusted at n by means of the toggle lever 0.
I claim:
1. In a chamber for the dry cooling of coke by means of a current of inert gases passing in a cycle over a heat exchanging device, the combination of a bottom part consisting of two hoppers arranged in the same axis, the lower hopper being provided with a discharging device, with a space provided between the hoppers, from which the cooling gas is forced through the coke.
2. In a chamber for the dry cooling of coke by means of a current of inert gases passing in a cycle over a heat exchanging device, the combination of a bottom part consisting of two hoppers arranged in'the same axis, the lowerhopper being provided With a discharging device with a space prov vided between the hoppers, from which the cooling gas is forced through the coke, the discharge opening provided at the lower hopper being equipped with two or more slides movable horizontally and symmetrically to the axis of the hopper, said slides ensuring that the opened outlet is alwayst o hoppers arranged in the same axis, the lower hopper being provided with a dis charging device, with a space provided he tween'th'e hoppers, from which the cooling gas i forced through the coke, a checking member in said chamber preventing the central portion oi the coke from dropping faster than the remaining part of the coke'in the chamber When partially discharged, whereby premature discharge oi"- the upper layers of hot coke is prevented.
