Patented Jan. 29, i924.
BENJAMIN LA FISH,
PATENT OFFECE- OF NORWOOD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE BELBERTRUNK 85 BAG COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
Application filed December 26, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LA PISH, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Norwood, in the county of Dela ware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Label Holders, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to Cl6Vl( es which are adapted to be attached to trunks and other shipping receptacles for holding labels on which may appear the address of the con signee or other information as may be desired. I
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved but simple construction of device of the character indicated comprising means whereby a label or labels containing the information desired to be im parted may be readily inserted in place therein and thereafter securely retained in place in such manner that it or they are not liable to be accidentally removed from the holder during the transit of the receptacle to which it is secured. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder having novel means for engaging and retaining in place the labels which are inserted therein.
To these and other ends my invent-ion comprehends the construction as hereinafter "described in detail and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application and in which I have illustrated one form of mechanical embodiment thereof. Itwill be understood, however, that changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the inven tion.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a label holding device embodying my invention and also showing a portion of the receptacle to which it is attached;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the device removed from the receptacle; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing: 1 designates a plate of suitable metal which, in the construction shown, is of rectangular shape and 2 designates a portion of a receptacle, such as a trunk, to which it is secured by means LABEL HoLnEn.
Serial No. 608,888.
of rivets 3. Other suitable fastening means may be employed if desired. The plate 1 is provided with slots 4 which extend longitudinally thereof, the side walls ofwhich are beveled inwardly as indicated at Situated adjacent one end of each of these slots is a slot 6 which extends transversely of the plate 1 and at right angles to the lengths of said slots. This slot 6 is separated from the slots 4 by the narrow portions 7 of the plate 1. The under side of the. plate 1 is provided with grooves 8 situated adjacent the opposite sides of the slots 4 and a groove 9 situated adjacent the left hand ends thereof. The outer edges of these grooves terminate in shoulders 1.0 as indicated. The under side of the said plate 1 is also provided with a groove 11 adjacent the outer edge of the slot 6, which groove likewise terminates in a shoulder as indi cated. The presence of the grooves 8 provides the elongated projection or ridge-like portions 15 upon the under side of the plate intermediate or between the slots 4. The
under sides of the portions 7 in alinement with the slots 4 are cut away so as to provide depressions 01'' slots therein for the strips 16 of paper, paste-board 01' the like which are inserted through the slot 6 to positions underneath the plate 1 at the bottoms of the slots 4. The opposite edges of these strips are situated Within the grooves 8 while the opposite ends thereof aresituat= ed within the grooves 9 and11,-the latter being the groove upon the under side of the plate 1 adjacent the outer edge of the slot The ends of the elongated projections 15 which terminate at the inner edge of the slot ('3 are tapered, as indicated at 1'7,
so as to facilitate the insertion of the strips 16 into position within or at the bottoms of the slots 4. The strips having been inserted into position within or at the bottoms of these slots the outer ends thereof are inserted into the groove 11, as indicated in Fig. l, so that the overhanging outer edge portion of, the slot 6 overlies the said ends and operates to retain the strips 16 in position. The outer ends of the said strips may be lifted so as to disengage the same from underneath the adjacent overlying outer edge portion of the slot 6, after which the said strips may be readily removed by pulling the same outwardly.
The strips are provided primarily for the i means for receiving and holding a address of the consignee of a shipped package or recepticle, but it will be understood that any other information desired may be placed upon the said strips.
In the construction as illustrated it will be noted that I have provided a plurality of slots for receiving a plurality of strips each of which may contain a single item of in formation, but it will be understood that the invention is not limited to any particular number of slots and that the number may be increased or diminished as may be desired. One of the important and essential 'teatures of my invention is the provision of means tor facilitating the insertion o't? strips into position within the holder and of means tor retaining and holding said strips securely in place after they have been inserted and positioned.
It will be seen that by my invention 1 have provided a label holding device of simple construction which when attached to a trunk or other shipping receptacle provides convenient, practical and etlicien label on Which may appear such information as it isdesired. to impart, such as the address-0t the consignee, or it may be arranged to contain the return address of the shipper. v
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A label holder consisting of a plate having one or more slots, therein adapted for the reception of a label or labels and having means for supporting a label or labels in rear of said slot or slots and having a slot extending substantially at right angles to said first named slot or slots and i spaced therefrom, and said plate also having a cut-out portion upon its under side adjacent the upper edge of said second named slot forming an overhanging lip under which an end or ends of said label or labels projects or project, substantially as dos ribed.
2. ii'label holder consisting of a plate of suitable metal having a plurality ot' slots therein, which plate is provided with grooves upon its under side adjacent the opposite side edges of said slotsand adjacent one end thereof, and the said plate being also provided with a slot situated a distance from the opposite ends of the said slots and extending at right angles thereto, and the under side of said plate being also provided with a groove adjacent the outer edge of the said transversely extending slot, and portions of the under side oi the said plate intermediate the said transversely extending slot and the adjacent ends oi. the first named slots being ren'ioved, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a label holder, the combination of a plate of suitable metal which is adapted to be secured to a shipping receptacle, which plate is provided with a plurality of slots arranged in parallel relation to each other, and a slot extending transversely of the first named slots and spaced therefrom, the under sideot' which plate isprovided with grooves adjacent the opposite sides of the tirstnamed slots and one end thereof opposite the end adjacent the second named slot and also with a groove adjacent the outer edge of the said second named transversely extending slot, means for securing the said plate to a receptacle, and labels within the said first named slots the opposite edges of which are seated in the grooves adjacent the edges and ends thereof, and one end of each of said labels being situated in the groove adjacent the outer edge, of the second named transversely extending slot.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventioml have hereunto signed my name this 6th day of December, A. D. 1922.
