Be it known that ALEXANDER STIRLING BURNETT and THOMAS COLLINS, both subjects of the King of Great Britain and Iremarily directed to embossing cardboard, mill board or the like, but which is applicable to printing or like purposes wherein firm even pressure is desiredbver a comparatively large area. V
fl'According to the invention the machine comprises a base formed with or having secured thereto side frames to carry a cross member to'receive the upward thrust. Slidably mounted on suitable'guides is theplaten or press-head to which downwardmovement is imparted by an inclined or cam member on a horizontally sliding member or members, hereinafter termed head presser-bars, located between the platen and the head of the press, the cam or inclined surfaces being arranged to impart pressure evenly at a plurality of points'over the area of the press head, say at or near each corner, suitable anti-friction devices being interposed to minimize the friction.
The head presser-bars are preferably actuated by a Vertically disposed cam pivotally mounted at the side of the machine and provided with manipulating means such as a handle or gearingaccording as the machine is hand or power operated.
According to a further feature of the invention a travelling table is mounted on the base below the press-head which is actuated in synchronism with thebefore mentioned vertical cam so that the traverse takes place whilst the press-head is in the raisedposition and this can be conveniently effected by a tappet lever adapted to engage a projection or projections pivotally mounted on the travelling bed duringv the return movement of the cam, said projection or projections being swung on their pivots at the end of the forward movement andfalling back into position behind said tappet lever so as to be engaged thereby and together with the table moved with the cam during its return movement.
When used for embossing, the embossing dies are secured to the table and according to a further feature of the invention said diesare formed with a projecting ledge at each end adapted to lie below clamping bars held down by hook bolts engaging grooves in the edges of the table.
The invention will be more particularly described by the aid of the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig: 1 is a side elevation of a press constructed according to the invention.

,In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient'manner as illustrated and as adapted for use in embossing cardboard, mill board and the like to produce shop tickets, show-cards, etc., the improved press comprises a bed or base a having two vertical standards 6, b at the side carrying a fixed cross-head 0 at the top. The latter is bored to receive, and constitute guideways for, two guide rods 03, d secured to the top side of the platen or presshead 6, one near each corner. The press-head is provided with a series of anti-friction rollers 7, say four, arranged in pairs inline with the guide rods 03 and the separate rollers of one pair being in line with the separate rollers of the other pair transversely of the 7 machine to engage two presser-bars g, 9 provided withinclined surfaces g or cams. Around the projecting ends of the guide bars 03 are spiral springs h in compression and collars or nuts d on the ends of the guide rods (Z so as to normally tend to raise the press-head into contact with the pressenbarsg. The rollers f are mounted in inclined runways 6 formed on or secured to the presser head 6, springs 7 serving to normally keep said rollers at the bottom of the runways and additional rollersz'mounted in runways 0 formed on or secured to the underside of the press head 0 are provided to receive the upward thrust of the presserbars 9, 9, spring 2' being provided to nor mally retain the rollers at the left hand end of the runways.

The type or dies are formed to give the desired impression and assuming it is desired to emboss millboa-rd with wording to constitute a show card said wording being covered by different coloured paper or material to the background, the dies are outlined to a knife edge to press the covering paper into the millboard and cut the same out to the correct shape during the act of embossing. Said dies see Figure 5 are termed with stepped edges so that they can be clamped on the table by suitable clamp ing bars a actuated by hook bolts u engaging slots 0r grooves in in the edges of the table 7). Alternatively. bars 1& of spring steel may be used, the ends at which are bent over to form spring grips to engage the edge of the work table. Said bars a are-provide, with a layer of rubber or like friction material on the underside to engage the type and securely hold the same in position.
The details of the machine may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention, for instance, the presser-bars may be actuated in both directions by a cam or cams the essential feature being the application of the pressure at a plurality of points over the press-head. i
What we claim is 1. Presses for embossing cardboard, millboard or the like or for printing or like purposes comprising a frame on which is mounted a platen or press-head to which downwardmovement is imparted by in-.. clined or cam-members on a horizontally sliding member or members, located between the platen and the head of the press, a cam or cams being provided to impart movement to the sliding member or members and the bers, substantially as described.
3. Presses for embossing, printing and the like as claimed in claim 2, characterized. in that the cam segment is interconnected with a tappet arm adapted to traverse the work table. substantially as described.
4. Presses for embossing, printing and the like as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that means are provided to clamp emboss, ing dies on the work table, substantially as described.
