7 pplication fi1ed-Ju1 3,
To aZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. lvniorrna citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, in the county of'Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roof-Framing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n attachments for steel squares.
An object of my invention is to provide an attachment for an ordinary steel square for determining the length of ordinary hip and jack rafters, the bevel cuts of jacks and hips and the dili'erence in length of jacks for any pitch of roof.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide an attachment for an ordinary square, whereby the square may be used either as a square or a bevel. I
A still further object of my invention is to provide an attachment fora square whereby the attachment may be adjusted in any desired position on the square and held 1n such position.
A still further object of my invention 1s to provide an attachment for an ordinary steel square which is strong, durable, simple and inexpensive in construction.
Other objects and advantages of the 1nvention will become apparent during the course of the following description. V
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a top plan View showing my invention applied to an ordinary steel square,
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the strlp shown in Fig.2, v
Figure l is a section on line 4:& of F g. 1,
Figure 5 is a detail view of the strip as shown in section in Fig.2, I 7
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 1, and
Figure 7 is a top planviewlof the strip shownin cross section in Fig. 4.
In the drawingsv'vhereinfor the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em bodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 represents the ordinary square. The numerals 11 and 12 designate strips adapted to" be mounted onthe square 10 and slide thereon. The strip 11 is provided with lips 13 1922.; SeriaI a 572, 80.
7 and 1e and" also a hinge15- to which is hinged a member 16 which forms one partrsof'the telescopic arm 17. The strip 12 isprovided with lips 18 and, a hinge=19.on which is mounted the other member 20 of the arm 17. Mounted on the arm 20 on the end near the hinge 16 is a bolt 21 on which is mounted a spring catch 22 to hold the arm 17 in any desired position. A thumb nut 23 is mounted on the bolt 21 to hold the spring arm 22 in position. T
In use, my device is used. in conjunction with an ordinary square. By reason of the telescopic arm 17, the strips 11 and 12 may he slid along the respective arm of the square 10. The attachment may be carried in any desired position by means of its spring arm 20, bolt 21 and thumb nut 23. It will thus be seen that I have provided a very useful combined square and bevel particularly for use in the smaller lumber or building work,
for example, a carpenter desires'to'builda roof of any pitch, the bevel should be set accordingly and the rafters could then be easily laid out with a bevel for both ends, and theslide of the sections 17 and 20 in the center giving the length of rafter, the number of inches to the foot, and the bevel for the lumber of the gables, as well as the studding in the gables all without changing the bevel. It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claimz- 1. The combination with a square, a teles'copic arm, a hinge mounted on each end of said arm, lips made integral with the hinge to adapt the arm to be slidably mounted on said square, and a spring arm mounted on said telescopic arm to engage the hinge and to hold the telescopic arm in any desired position. 2. The combination with a square, slidable hinge members mounted on the arms of said square, and a 'telescoplc arm connected tov said hinge members, and a spring arm mounted on said telescopic arm to engage oneof said hinges to hold the same in adjustment. I V
3. The combination with a square, a hinge mounted on each end of said telescopic arm, lips made integral with the hinges, one of said hinges being provided with lips engageable with one side of the arm of a square only, the other of said hinges having lips carried thereby engageable with both edges of the arm of a square, said hinge members being slidably mounted on the arms of said square, and means carried by said telescopic arm to hold the slidable hinges in the desired adjustments.
4. The combination with a square, clips slidably mounted on the arm of'said square,
hinge members carried by said clips and movable therewith, a telescopic arm hingedly 15 connected to said hinge members, and a 7 spring arm mounted on said telescopic arm to engage one of said hinge members and to hold the telescopic arm in the desired ad justment. v V In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
