To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NOEL STATHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, now residing at Irvington, county of Westchester, State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Razors and Stropping Devices, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.

This invention relates especially to safety razors and combined stropping devices in which the razor handle, which may be advantageously formed of sheet metal, may have a corresponding sheet metal blade holder movably mounted thereon and prefcrably permanently connected thereto, as by hinging the blade holder to a hinge support which may be pivoted to the handle. In this way the blade holder and razor blade which may be held therein, may, for stropping purposes. be swung substantially into the plane of the adjacent portion of the handle and retained in this stropping position as by a corresponding retaining device or recess in the handle, enclosing an adjacent end of the blade holder. After the razor blade has been sharpened the holder, may be released from this stropping position and swung out of the plane of the handle and held in any such desirable shaving position in connection with a guard detachably cooperating with the blade and holder and preferably having a locking device which may be conveniently snapped around the end or other part of the handle to hold the parts in this shaving position.

By making the handle of the razor of thin sheet metal lightness and compactness are promoted and this handle 1 may pref erably be formed with a double thickness pivot portion in which the two layers or thicknesses of sheet metal 16, 17 may be some what separated if desired. The blade holder 12, which may also advantageously be formed of thin sheet brass or other resilient material, is preferably loosely mounted on the handle while permanently connected thereto, so that the blade holderis foldablyand swingingly connected to the handle. This may be effected by providing a hinge support such as the plate or sheet 14, pivoted as by the pin 15, to the handle and preferably located between the double thick nesses of the pivot portion of the handle as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. A hinge joint 13 may be provided between this hinge support ll and the blade holder, or a hinge member '21 which may be soldered or otherwise connected to the blade holder. Thus the blade holder is permanently connected to the handle and may fold out into angular position with respect thereto by moving about its hinge connection with the hinge support. and also the blade holder together with its connected hinge support may swing about the pivot 15 so that the edge of the razor blade in this holder may assume any desired angular position with respect to the length of the handle. This is illustrated in Figs. 8 and, 5, since when the blade holder and cooperating blade 19 have been folded or opened out about the hinge joint into substantially the plane of the handle, these stantially parallel to the length of the handle as indicated in Fig. 5, the recess 22 in the handle member 16, being provided to accommodate the hinge 13 under these conditions. The blade holder and blade may be held in this stropping position by any suitable retaining device, and for this purpese a resilient gripping retaining device or recess may be conveniently provided by the wedging opening 18 tor-med between the two thicknesses of the handle material at this point, so that the blade holder may enter this opening which shown in Fig. 1, and be wedged tightly enough between these resilient sheet metal portions to be properly retained in this stropp'iiig position, the resilient pressure against the sides of the blade holder also serving to hold the razor blade more tightly in position thereon. This ar rangement malres it easy to strep or sharpen the razor blade without removing it from. the blade holder and as indicated in Fig; 6 this may be accomplished by draviing'" the blade holder and blade along a: strop such as 23 so that the edge 19 of the razor blade engages the strep siitficiently for sharpenin contact therewith during this stroke, then, if desired, the razor may be brought back and drawn down again beneath the strep as indicated in Fla. 7 so that both sides of the razor edge may be stropp'ed or sharpened alternately,

For shaving purposes, the razor blade and holder may be disengageably supported in any desired angular position with respect to the handle, preferably in connection with a suitable guard member properly cooperating with the blade edge. ids indicated in Figs: 1, 2 and 4% the guard member 2 of sheet brass or other suitable material, may be provided with projecting lateral portions or flanges 6 in which guide chaimels 8 may be formed to engage or cooperate with the edges ofthe blade holder 12, and, if desired, the ends of these flanges may constitute aligning shoulders with which the ali ning lugs or portions 20 of the razor blade may engage as indicated in Fig. l to accurately position oralign the blade with respect to the guard member. These lugs may also be used to align the blade within the blade holder which may be formed with recessed portions 24 with which these lugs may engage as indicated in Fig. 3. The guard member may be formed with a locating edge or member 5 adapted to engage the blade holder adjacent the edge of the blade and a codperating guard lip or portion l may be arranged in advance of the razor edge so to provide a suitable interval or space 3, as indicated in Figs. The razor strop' such as 23 may, of course be wrapped around the razor when in this folded position so as to protect the razor and guard its cutting edge and the strop may beheld by an elastic loop 26 on the strop so; that a. very compact razor and. strep may thus be secured for a travelling or portable outfit;

9 In safety razors and stroppers, a handle having a double thickness pivot portion, a gripping sheet metal blade holder, a hinge support hinged to said blade holder and pivotally mounted between the double thickness of the pivot portion of said handle, a razor blade detachably held in said blade holder, a retaining device on said handle to hold said blade holder when said holder and blade are swung substantially into the plane of the handle for sharpening purposes, and a guard member adapted to be detachably connected with said blade and holder and a resilient looking device to hold said guard member and blade in shaving po sition.

3. In safety razors and stroppers, a handle, a gripping blade holder, a hinge support hinged to said blade holder and pivotally mounted on said handle, a razor blade detachably held in said blade holder, a retaining device on said handle to hold said blade holder when said holder and blade are swung substantially into the plane of the handle for sharpening purposes, and a guard member adapted to be detachably connected With said blade and holder.

4. In safety razors and stroppers, a handle, a gripping blade holder foldably and pivotally mounted on said handle, a razor blade detachably held and aligned in said blade holder, a retaining device to hold said holder and blade substantially in the plane of the adjacent portion of the handle for sharpening purposes, a guard member adapted to be detachably connected with said blade and bolder, said guard member having guide channels to receive the lateral cdges of said blade holder and having a locating edge to engage said blade holder adjacent the blade edge and a cooperating guard lip formed. with separated contact portions in front of the edge of said blade, and a resilient locking device on said guard member to detachably engage said handle and hold said guard member and blade in shaving position.

5. In safety razors, a handle, a gripping blade holder foldably and pivotally mounted on said handle, a razor blade detachably held and aligned in said blade holder, a guard member adapted to be detachably dmnccted with said blade and holder, said guard member having guide chani'iels and a locating edge adjacent the blade edge and a cooperating guard lip formed with separated contaet portions in front of the edge of said blade, and a locking device on. said guard member to detachably engage said handle and hold said guard member and blade in shaving position.

6. In safety razors and stroppers, a handle, a blade holder adapted to receive a razor blade, a hinge support hinged to said blade holder and pivotally mounted on said handle, a retaining device to hold said blade holder substantially in the plane of the handle for sharpening purposes, a guard men'iber adapted to be detachably connected with. said blade holder, and a locking device adjacent the hinge joint between said members to hold said guard member and blade in shaving position with respect to said handle.

7. In safety razors and stroppers, a handle, a blade holder foldably and swingingly connected to said handle, a razor blade detaehably mounted in said blade holder, a retaining device to hold said blade substan tially in the plane of the adjacent portion of the handle for sharpening purposes and means adjacent the foldable joint between said blade holder and said handle to releasably hold said blade in shaving posi tion with respect to said handle and at a substantial angle thereto.

8. In safety razors and stroppers, a handle having a substantially flat connecting portion, a blade holder having a hinge joint foldably mount-ing it on said handle eon necting portion, a razor blade detachably mounted in said blade holder, a resilient retaining device to hold said blade substantially in the plane of the adjacent connecting portion of the handle for sharpening purposes and holding means adjacent said hinge joint to releasably hold said blade in shaving position with respect to said handle and projecting at a substantial angle there from.

9. In safety razors, a handle having a substantially flat connecting portion, a blade holder having a hinge joint foldably mounting it on said handle connecting portion, a razor blade detachably mounted in said blade holder, and holding means adjacent said hinge oint to releasably hold said blade in shaving position with respect to said hair dle and projecting at a substantial angle therefrom.

10. In safety razors and stroppers, a handle having a substantially flat connecting portion, a substantially flat blade holder having a hinge joint foldably mounting it on said handle connecting portion and adapted to releasably support a razor blade, a device to hold said blade holder substantially in the plane of the adjacent connecting portion of the handle and locking means adjacent said hinge joint to .releasably hold said blade holder in shaving position with respect to said handle and projecting at a substantial angle therefrom.

11. In safety razors, a handle having a substantially flat connecting portion, a sub stantially flat blade holder having a joint foldably mounting it on said handle con necting portion and adapted to releasably support a razor blade, a device to hold said blade holder substantially in the plane of the adjacent connecting portion of the handie and locking means zidjacn't said joint to releasably hold said blad holder in shavmg position with respect to said handle and projecting at a snbstanfiizil angle therefrom.
