ANNA DEANE BAILEY, or New YORK, N. Y;
ADJUSTABLE DRESS FORM.
Applicationfiled January 7, 1922. serial-no. 527,662.
To all whom it may concern." Y
Be it known that I, ANNA DEANE BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State ofNew York,:have vented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Dress Forms, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to improvements and has for-pits principal object the provision of adjustable means for variably contracting a compressible dress form in order to cause it to assume, the size and shape of bodies of widely varied size and conformation. i r Another object of the invention is to provide a sectionalcovering adapted foruse with a compressibledress form, the sectional covering being providedwith means whereby the various sections may be lacedtogether over the dress formin order to'shape the dress form exactly to the dimensions and conformation of theperson for whom the dress form isto be used.
Heretofore it has been the practice to first make whatis called afitted lining andto then secure the fitted lining over a compressible dress form. The fitted lining was made to accurately fit the person for whom the dress form was to be used. The coin pressible dress form could not be variably compressed Without providing fitted linings of various sizes and shapes. Y a
In. the actual use of this invention it has been found desirable to first lace the sectional covering to closely fit the person for whom the dress form is to be used, andto then apply it to the compressible dress form. In lacing 'it about the person the .strings extending down the middle. of the back are first laced tightly to bring theedgesof the back sections close together. The other sections are then laced together more or less tightly [as may be necessary to make. the sectional covering accurately fit the person.
The middle-back lacing is thentaken out and the sectional covering removed from the person and applied to the dress form. The middle-back lacing 'isthen relaced and the edges of the back centralsections' drawn close together to the exact positions they occupied when the covering was. laced on the person. Thisgives an exact reproduction in dimensionsand contour of the person for whom the dress form is'to be used; It is manifest, however,- that the sectional tached; and I v a Fig. 4' a horizontalcsectional view through covering may be laced to known dimensions. If the dimensions of the person for whom the dress form is to be used are known, the sectional covering may be laced to give the dress form those dimensions. It is manifest that the form may be adapted for the use of persons of various shapes and sizes by merely varying the lacing;
Another object of the invention is toprovide an extensible skirt portion which may bereadily lengthened or shortenedby merely raising or lowering the dress form on .its support. 1 4 r w In the drawing Fig. 1 is {a perspective view of the dress form complete; 7
V Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof the sectional to the 7 dress covering applied showing the rear side thereof; 7 U
ig. 3v is a perspective view showing all ofthe sections of the coveringremoved from and the lacingstri'ngs deform and the dress form the dress form, showing the sectional covers mg appliedthereto.
Referring to the various parts ti e als, l'designates a pedestal orjsupport'which is provided witha dress form 4 rotatably' V rigid upright 2. Adustably mounted on this upright is a verti-r lar part 3, with thedress form 4 supported thereon, is secured in its vertically adjusted positions by means pressible dress forms such as shown and ally to the shape of. the upper part of the;
In the drawings the compressible material 7 H of. aset'screwfi mounted in the lower end of; the tube 3 and adapted to clamp against'the rigid post 2. The
described in my. pending application, Serial I No. 509,970, filed October 24 1921 and also with compressible dress forms such'as shown in my patents'numbered 1,225,207 and 1,,- 376,502. The soft compressible material 7 shown in'Fig. 4 maybe readily. compressed by lacing the sectional covering over it, as
will be more fully hereinafteradescribed. V
The sectional covering comprises a front-r central section 8; two rear central sections 9; two front side sections 10, and two rear side sections 11.
The two rear central sections 9 are connected to the front central section 8 along the shoulder seams 12 and the division between the two central rear sections is down the middle of the back and longitudinally of the cover. Secured to the sections 8 and 9 is an upstanding neck portion 13, the ends of the neck portion being coincident with the inner edges of the sections 9, so that the neck portionis split and so arranged that its edges may be laced together invertical' alignment with the inner edges of the sections'9. The front central section 8 is tapered. from the shoulder portions downwardly approximately tothe waistlineand is thenslightly expanded from the waist-line to the lower edge of .the cover. The purpose of this, of course, is to contractthe cover at the waist-line.
The front side sections 10 are permanently connectedto the rear side sections 11' along the shoulder seams 'letl Secured to the upper outer edges of the front and rear side s'ections are sleeve portions 15. Each sleeve portion is split along its under side, the edges of the sleeve portions being coincident with and a continuation of the outer edge portions of the connected sections 10 and 11. Said sleeve sections extend around the shoulder seams and downwardly equal distances along the outer edges of the sections 10 and 11, as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The longitudinal edges of all of the sections ofthe cover are provided with suitable eyelets to receive the lacing strings. The two central rear sections 9 and the edges of the collar section 13 are adjust-ably connected together by means of a lacing cord or string 16. The two central rear sections are. laced to the two rear side sections 11 by lacing cords 17. The front central section 8 is laced to the inner edges of the two front side sections 10 by means of lacing cords 18. The outer edges of the front side sections 10 are adjustably connected to the outer edges of the rear side sections 11 by lacing cords19. These lacing cords 19 also lace together theqlower edges of the sleeve sections 15 so that when said parts are secured together thelacing cords 19 extend along under the arms and down the sides of the form. The lacing cords 18 run down the front of the form while the lacing cords 16 and 17' extend down the'back of the form.
Both the front and rear side sections are tapered from their ends to the waist-line in order to contract the form.
To provide a simple and convenient means to serve as a skirt length gage, I mount on the post 2 near the base 1 a rotatable disk 20. To the lower ends of the several sections of the cover I secure long light coil springs 21. The lower ends of these springs are detachably connected by means of pins and hooks, or otherwise, to the edge of the disk 20. By raising or lowering the tube 3 and the dress form carried thereby, the light coil springs 21 may be lengthened or shortened to give the desired length of skirt. The springs have a great advantage over strings or tapes because they can. be simultaneously extended to the desired lengthby raising the dress form and locking it'in position by means of the set screw The dress form 4 and the disk '20 are rotatably mounted on the support or standin order that they ma be rotated for convenience of use.
It is manifest that with one sectional covering, as described herein, a compressible dress form may be adapted for the use of persons of widely difierent size and different conformations. i Y

1. A sectional cover for a compressible dress form comprising a front central section and two rear central sections connected to the front central section at the shoulder portions thereof and on each side of the neck portion, a neck portion connected to the front and rear central sections, said neck portion being split coincident with the inner edgesof the rear central sections, front, and rear side sections connected'together in pairs along the shoulder portions, the outer edges of each connectedpair of side sections being arranged close together at "the 'sides'of-the cover, a lacing cord adjustably connecting the adjacent tions, lacing cords connectingtogether'the edges of the front central sectio'n to the-in ner edges of the front side sections, lacing cords connectingthe outer edges of the rear. central sections" to the adjacent inner edges of the rear side sections," and'lac'ing cords connecting togetherthe "adjacent edges of the front and rear side sections, these-latter lacing cords extending along the sides of the cover. 2. A sectionalfabric jacket for compressi ble garment forms divided verticallyinto three sections along two' lines extending from the front lower edge to the rear lower edge of the jacket and passing over the shoulder portions of saidjacketjand means for lacing the sections ofthe'jacket together along said two lines of division.
3. A sectional fabric jacket for compressible garment forms divided-into central and side sections alon two lines extending from the front lower edge to the'rear lower edge of the jacket and passing overthe shoulder portions of said jacket,"said' side sections each being formed with a sleeve portion and edges of the central rear -sec-- being divided along a line extending inwardly along the under side of the sleeve and thence downwardly to the bottom of' the side section, ,means' for lacing the side extending line of division.
7 sections to the central section, and means for lacing the edges of each side section together along said inwardly and downwardly 4. A garment form comprising a base plate, a torso simulating portion, extensible means for holding the torso simulating portion in various vertically adjusted positions above the base plate, and an annular series of vertically extending skirt-distending coil springs surrounding said extensible means and connected attheir upper ends to move up and down with the torso simulating portion of the form and attached at their lower ends to the said base plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
