Description

L. F. COTEY Dec. 18 1923.
ICE SHAVER Filed May 26 1925 Z. I 0 6a gnve'nl'oc Patented Dec. 18, I923.
NEE
' LLEWELLY1\T F. COTEY, OF ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA.
ICE SHAVER.
Application filed May 26, 1923. Serial No. 641,549.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LLEWELLYN F. COTEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Shavers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ice shavers, and has for its primary object, the provision of such a tool that may be employed to advantage as an ice pick.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a combination tool that is comparatively simple of construction, and inexpensive of manufacture, the nature of the same being such as to permit of the same being readily used as an ice pick or an ice shaver.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein: 1
Figure 1 is a detail vertical cross section of an ice shaver constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my novel tool embodies a somewhat bulbous shaped hollow handle 5,'that also forms a v receptacle, the same consisting of a suitable metal end formed with an extension 6 at its lower end. with which is associated the upper headed end 8 of a desirable form of picking element 9. It is of course to be understood that this picking element 9 is associated with the handle 5, while the same is being molded.
The upper end of the handle is open, and is adapted to be normally closed by a cover 10, which is hingedly secured at 11 to said handle. The handle is formed upon the side diametrically opposite from the hinged connection 11 with an integral lip .12, over which engages a spring clip 13 carried by the cover 10, when the same is closed, which affords an effectual means for locking the cover upon the handle.
The cover is provided with a trans verse slot 14 that is formed at a slight angle to the vertical axis of the pick and projecting through this slot is an inclined blade 15, that is formed at its lower end with a lateral extension 16, whereby the blade may be secured through the medium of rivets or the like 17 to the interior of said cover 10.
In view of the above description, it will be at once apparent that the tool may be employed as an ice pick or as an ice shaver, and when employed for shaving ice, the cover 10 is necessarily closed. In shaving ice, the tool is drawn over the surface thereof, and the blade effectually scrapes the ice and forces the same through the slot 14 and into the handle 5. When this handle which is in reality a receptacle becomes filled with shaved ice, the cover 10 may be opened and ice ejected therefrom.
Numerous advantages of a tool of this character will be appreciated by those skilled-in the art, and although I have herein shown and described the most practical embodiment of the invention with which. I am now familiar, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:
An ice shaver comprising a handle element to be connected with a device such as an ice pick and provided with a relatively large recess to provide an ice shaving retaining receptacle, a closure hinged to the handle and having a longitudinal slot, a scraper blade carried by the closure and passing through the slot, and a resilient catch carried by the closure for engagement with the handle to normally hold the closure against movement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LLEWELLYN F. COTEY.
