Be it known that I, HARRY A. PHARO, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Trolley-Frog Devices, of which the follow-i be readily installed in an overhead trolley system and which will permit of adjustment of-a trolley frog after the system is assembled.
Briefly speaking, my invention consists in providing a relatively rigid member that is adapted to be connected to a cross-span cable and providing the rigid member with a turnbuckle device that is adapted to change the angle of intersection of the rigid member and, hence, the cross-span cable with a trolley frog that is supported thereby.
For a better understanding of my invention, reference may be made to the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 of which is a bottom plan View of a trolley frog positioned in an overhead trolley system by means of a trolley-frog adjusting device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a trolley frog positioned in an overhead trolley system by means of a modified form of trolleyfrog adjusting device constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 3 is a view, in side elevation and drawn to a larger scale, of the trolley-frog adjusting device illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Referring particularly to- Fig. 1 of the drawing, a trolley frog 1 is provided with a plurality of eyelets 2 which permit it to be secured, by means of a plurality of adjustable trolley-frog devices 3 that are constructed in accordance with my invention, to a cross-span cable 4:. v The cross-span cable 1 is suitably secured to a plurality of poles 5.
g The trolley frog 1 supports a conductor 6, which is positioned over a tangent track and a conductor 7, which is positioned over a turnout track, in accordance with a familiar practice. The trolley frog 1 may be of any standard construction and it is not necessary, for an understanding of my inventlon, that it be more fully described.
The trolley-frog adjusting devices 3-severally comprise a rigid member or bar 8, a cross arm 9, a plurality of knee braces 10 for maintaining the cross arm 9 in fixed re lation to the rigid member 8, a strain insulator 11,'and a plurality of turnbuckle devices 12 of any well known pattern. The
turnbuckle devices 12 severally comprise a plurality of threaded rod members 13, which are secured together by means of a turnbuckle 14 and which may be provided with bent portions or hooks 15 for pivotally securing them to the cross arms 9 and to the "eyelets 2 of the trolley frog 1.
The method of adjusting the trolley frog 1, is to so twist the turnbuckles 14 as to change the distances between the ends of the cross arm 9 and the corresponding eyelets 2 of the trolley frog device 1. By changing these distances, the angle of intersection between the'cross-span cable 4: and the trolley frog 1 is adjusted to bring a plurality of runners 16 of the frog 1 into proper aline ment with the overhead trolley conductors 6 and 7.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, corresponding parts have been given like numerals. A modified form of trolleyfrog adjusting device 21 comprises a rigid member or bar 22 made of two strip- metal members 22 and 22, one flat and the other suitably bent, which are riveted together, as best shown in Fig. 3. The rigid member 22 is provided with a pivotally mounted hook member 23 for securing it to an eyelet 2 of the trolley frog 1 and a ring bolt 24.- for securing it to the cable 4.
A rigid member or threaded rod 25, which is provided with a hooked portion 26 for securing it to one of the eyelets 2 at one end of the trolley frog 1, is pivotally mounted by means of a holding member or block 27 and a bolt 28 between the rigid members 22 and 22 The rigid member or rod 25 is provided with a threaded end 29 that extends through a hole in the block 27 and turning the nut 31 to change the distance between the end eyelet 2 of the frog 1 and the bolt 28, by which the rigid member 25 is pivotally mounted upon the rigid member 22.
The distance between the center eyelet 2 and the end eyelet 2 being constant, and the distance between the center eyelet 2 nd the bolt 28 also being constant, the angle formed by the cable t with the trolley frog 1 may be changed by varying the distance between the end eyelet 2 and the bolt 28.
'VVhile it is possible to employ only a single device 3 or 21 to adjust the position of the trolley frog 1, it is considered preferable to employ a plurality of such devices, as illustrated, to more rigidly position the frog. v
While I have illustrated my invention in preferred forms, it is apparent that minor modifications may be "made in the structure and arrangement of parts of the trolleyfrog adjusting device without departing from the spirit of my invention. I desire, therefore,.to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A trolley-frog adjusting device comprising a member adapted to be attached to a cross-span cable and a second member adapted to be connected to a trolley conductor and to said first member, said second member being provided with means for varying its length.
2. A trolley-frog adjusting device comprising a rigid member extending at .approximately right angles to, and adapted to be attached to a cross-span cable, a second rigid member adapted to be connected to a trolley conductor and to saidfirst member, and means for varying the angular relation of said members.
3. A trolley-frog adjusting device comprising a rigid member provided with a cross-arm, said r1g1d member being adapted to be connected to a cross-span cable, and a distance varying device adapted to be con nected to said cross arm and to the trolley i'ro 5A trolley-frog adjusting device comprising a rigid member provided with a nected to a cross-span cable, and a plurality of turnbuckle devices attached relatively near the ends of said cross arm, and adapted to be connected to the trolley frog.
6. A trolleyefrogadjusting device comprising a rigid member adapted to be connected to a cross-span cable, and means adapted to be adjustably connected between said rigid member and the pan of said trolley frog for varying the angular relation of said rigid memberto said pan.
7. A trolleyefrog adjusting :device comprising a rigid member adapted to be connected to a, cross-span cable, and a second rigid member pivotally vmounted on said first rigid member and provided with means for changing its length.
8. The combination with a trolley-fro pan and a suspending cable therefor, oi means comprising an adjustable threaded member for varying the angle therebetween.
9. The combination with a trolley frog and a suspending structure secured to a point intermediate the ends 'thereof, of
means comprising an adjustable device connected to said structure for varying the distance between said structure and the ends of said trolley frog. 1
