Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful niprovements in Dippers, ot which the Yfollowing,v a specilication.
This invention relates to clippers for ex- 10 cavating, dredging, Cli fiiig` and similar work and its object is to strengthen the connection ot the bail bracket with the body of the dipper to avoid the strains and st'eSSeS to which the bracket is subjected in actual operation.
The bail ot' the clipper is attached to the dipper body on each side thereot by a pin which passes through the bail bracket` the bail and the side of the dippcr body. lVhen 29 the dipper is lowered for scooping into the material to be dug the bail makes an angle ot approximately 450 with the top or open part of the dipper, and when the dipper is pulled into the material the bail straightens up perpendicularly to the top of the dipper and may, when theclipper is at its highest point, lean towards the 'front of the clipper fifteen or twenty degrees. ln a complete digging operation the bail moves through an 30 angle ot' approximately sixty or sixty-tive degrees. T his angular pull ot the bail on the body ot the clipper causes a corresponding side pull on the bail brackets and likewise a shearingstress on the rivets that hold the bail brackets to the dipper body.
lt is my object to strengthen and reinforce the connection between the bail brackets and the clipper body by providingmeans other than the rivets for taking' the side strain and 40 for holding the bail brackets in their proper position so that a more eilicient connection between the bail brackets and the clipper body is provided.

Referring to the drawings, 5 is a clipper body. (j the bail. 7 the bail bracket and S the pin which passes through the bail bracket, the bail and the side ot the body to attach the bail to the body. The bracket is attached to the side oi the body by rivets 9 in the usual manner and the bracket is set and provided with a shoulder l0 which engages a rib or ledge ill on the side ot the dipper body. rthis ledoe may be an integral part lof the clipper body as shown in Fig. 2; or it may be an integral part of the bracket as 12 to engage a recess i3 in the side of the dipper body, as shown 'in Fig. 3; or it may be a separate piece ist to tit in a recess 15 in the side ot the clipper body to be engaged by the shoulder 1G ont the bail bracket as shown in F 4l.
ln addition to the rivets l also provide a rey 'i7 which may be an integral part ofthe side ot the clipper body to engage a recess 'i8 `in the bail bracket, as shown in Fig. 2; or it may be an integral part 19 otl the. bail bracket to engage a recess 20 in the side of the clipper body, as shown in Fig. 3; or it may be a separate part 2l to engage a recess in the side ol the clipper body and a recess 23 in the bail bracket, as shown in Fig. 4.-.
The rib or ledge ll relieves the rivets of the directy pull ot the bail upon the clipper body and the key relieves the rivets of the side strains and stresses which would otherwise have a tendency to shear and loosen the rivets. The .key holds the bail bracket in its proper position and in conjunction with the rib or ledge prevents any movement of the bail bracket relative to the clipper body thereby contininty the function of the rivets Ypractically to securing the bail bracket to the body since tie key will preventside strains and the rib or ledge will take the direct strains ot the bail which would otherwise wear and have a tendency to loosen and shear the rivets.

I clain'i:
l. The combination of a clipper body, a bail bracket fastened thereto, and a key forming` an interlocking connection between the body and the bracket.
2. rlie combination of dipper body, a bail bracket fastened thereto, and a longitudinal key extending in the direction of the length of the bail bracket and forming an interlocking connection between the clipper body and tl e bracket,
3. The combination of a clipper body, a bail bracket, ineans for fasteninft),` the bracket to the body, and means interposed between the bracket and the body to prevent sheen ing` strains on the fastening ineans.
4. The combination of a dipper'body, a bracket fastened to the body, a transverse rib or ledge to prevent forward niovernent of the bracket in the direction of the pull on the bail, and a key angnlarly disposed withV relation to said transverse rib or ledge to prevent lateral movement of theV bracket relative to the body.
5. The combination of a Clipper body, a key rigid with the body, a bail bracket having a recess to engage said key, and ineans for fastening the bracket to tlie body.
f 6. The combination of dipper body having a transverse rib or ledge, a key integral with the body, ai bail bracket having a shoulder to engage said rib or ledge and Va recess to engage said key, and ineans Vfor fastening,` the bracket to the body.
7. The combination of a dipper body, a bail bracket fastened to the body, lneans to resist the strain of direct pull of the bail upon the bracket, and ineans to resist strain of angular pull of the bail relative to the bracket.
