Description

Dec. 18, 1923.
J. W. IDEMPSEY GAS AND LIQUID CONTACT DEVICE Filed March 29 1920 I 1 vwe-Moz eflm ww Patented Dec. 18, 1923.
FEQEEM time JOSEPH WILLIAM DEMPSEY, OF LANSING, IOWA.
GAS ANI) LIQUID CONTACT DEVICE.
Application filed. March 29, 1920. Serial No. 369,631.
[ all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn YVVILLIAM Dmrrssr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Allamakee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Gas and Liquid Contact Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to deodorizers or disinfecting devices, and it is the primary 39 object of the invention to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily supported on the ordinary electric fan now in use, whereby the air passing through the electric fan may contact with the device to carry the deodorizing medium throughout the area of the room.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a container adapted to contain a deodorizing or disinfecting liquid, together with means maintaining a predetermined quantity on the surface of the device, wherein the liquid is engaged by the air from the fan.
vVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the'combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a fan showing the invention as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of the device.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the same.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the device, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 1 designates the body of the container, which is preferably circu- ]ar in formation and relatively deep, the same being formed of any suitable metal.
Disposed in spaced relation with the bottom of the body 1 is a partition 2, which is of a size to form, with the rear wall of the body 1, a compartment 3, and as shown this partition 2 is provided with an opening 4 forming the filling opening through which the compartment 3 may be filled with any suitable deodorizing or disinfecting liquid. This partition 2 is also provided with an opening indicated at 5 through which the wick 6 extends, there being one end of the wick disposed within the compartment 3, the opposite end thereof extending above the partition 2, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described. Supported on the partition 2 is a circular member 7 formed of any suitable material having absorbing qualities, and this circular member is also provided with an opening adapted to register with the filling opening 4:, and an opening adapted to register with the wick opening 5, whereby the upper end of the wick 6 may pass through the circular memher 7 in which position the wick is normally supported. One end of the wick, or the end of the wick that supplies the members 7 with the liquid, embodies a plurality of sections disposed in spaced relation with each other to insure the distribution of liquid throughout the entire surface of the member 7.
Disposed above the circular member 7, is
a circular member 8 formed preferably of felt, but it is to be understood that any suitable cloth having absorbing qualities may be employed in this capacity. Formed in the circular member 8 isan opening registering with the filling opening 4: to permit the stopper 9 to be inserted in the filling opening, thus preventing the liquid contained in. the compartment 3 from flowing through said filling opening.
The circular members 7 and 8 are secured to the partition 2, by means of the spring arms 10 and 11 which extend through the circular members 7 and 8, the extreme ends thereof being bent over the circular member 8 to secure the circular members in their proper positions on the body portion 1.
A guard plate 12 extends. across the lower front edge of the body portion 1 and is dis posed in spaced relation with the partition 2 for preventing the liquid contained in the members 7 and 8 from dripping therefrom, and to hold the liquid within the body 1.
Secured to the upper front edge of the body 1, is a hook member 13 which has a portion thereof arranged in spaced relation with the circular member 8, to provide a b it;
odorizing liquid is placed in the compartment 3, Where the same is absorbed through the wick 6, which transfers the liquid onto,
the circular members 7 and 8, Which circular member-s become saturated so thatwhen the device is positioned on the fan guard, the air from the fan picks up particles of the fluid and distributes the same throughout the area of the room in which the fan is operated,
Having thus described the. invention, what I claim as new is 7 In a gas and liquid contact device,.a hol low body portion, a partition in the body portion, said partition having an opening, a circular member having absorbing qualities positioned on the partitioning member,
a circular member having absorbing qualities disposed adjacent to the first mentioned circularmember and, arranged in spaced relation therewith, a Wick having one of its ends positioned Within the body portion, the opposite end of said-"Wick including a plurality of sections disposed bet-Weenthe circular members, the sections of the Wick being disposed in, spaced relation With each other, means for securing the circular members against movement, and a guard at the lower portion of the body and disposed in spaced relation With the circular members. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signa ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH VILLIAM DEMPSEY.
