JOHN CALLN, 0F RAY, ARIZONA.'
HOSE SUPPORTER.
Application led June 29, 1921. Serial No. 481,372.
To aZZ whomt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CALLAN, a citi'- zen of the United States, residing at Ray, in the county of Pinal and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in a Hose Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchy as will enable. others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to means for retaining hosieryl in proper position and is designed particularly for long stockings which extend well above the knee and require to be supported at their upper ends.
The invention consists of a garter embodying a portion of rigid material having a-n arm pro-jecting therefrom to extend upwardly along the leg above the knee to engage the upper end of the stocking and prevent it from slipping down.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specication,
.Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side view of the supporter showing the same applied.
Figure 3 is a detail view of a portion of the supporter showing the manner of connecting one end of the elastic thereto.
Figure 4 is a detail view similar to Figure 3 of a modification.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The supporter is made in rights and lefts and comprises a garter for encircling the leg and an arm projecting from the garter and adapted to extend upwardly along the side of the leg to engage the upper portion of the stocking and retain the same in proper position. The garter portion of the supporter comprises a portion formed of rigid material such as Celluloid, hard rubber, or other composition, or metal and a port-ion constructed of elastic, tape or similar material. The garter portion of the supporter is designed to bei applied to the leg just above the knee with the arm ext-ending upwardly along the outer side of the leg to engage the upper portion of the stocking and retain the same in the desired adjusted position. The portion constructed of rigid material comprises a semi-circular band 1 and an arm 2 projecting therefrom so as to occupy an upward position when the. supporter is in place. The arm 2 is disposed at one end of the band 1 and forms an obtuse angle therewith to admit lof the arm extending upwardly and forwardly so as to engage the upper end of the stocking near the front thereof. Each supporter has one arm only and the same is arranged to extend along the outer side of the leg. The band 1 and arm 2 are preferably of integral formation. The ends of the band 1 curve outwardly to avoid injurious and annoying pressure upon the side of the leg. The lining 3 is applied to the inner side of the band 1 and is secured thereto in any manner. In the preferable construction the lining 3 is stitched along its edges to the edge portions of the band 1, the latter being provided along its edges with openings to receive the stitching. A keeper 4 is provided at each end of the band 1 and consists of a portion of the band pressed outwardly between parallel slits or cuts. The band 1 is designed to occupy the rear portion of the leg above the knee and is held in place by an elastic 5 which is attached at its ends to the ends of the band 1 by means of the keepers 4. The loose ends of the elastic 5 are adapted to be adjustably connected to the keepers 4 to admit of adjusting the supporter to the size of the limb. As indicated in the drawings, the loose ends of the elastic 5 after passing through the keepers 4 are returned upon themselves and pass between the elastic and the band 1 and are usually folded over the main portion o-f the elastic and passed between it and the return portions extending over the keepers 4. Obviously the loose ends of the elastic may be fastened in any preferred or convenient way to render the same secure after the garter portion of the supporter has been adjusted to the limb. A lining 7 is applied to the inner side of the elastic 5 to obviate annoying pressure upon the fro-nt portion of the leg. The lining 7 may'be'secured to the elastic 5 in any manner so as not to interfere with the stretching of the elastic when placing the device in position or removing it from the limb.v
An end portion of the elastic 5 is providedv with one or more button holes l6to cooperate with a button 8 attached to the elastic,
whereby a purse sling may be provided 'for y same is made secure against possible displacement under ordinary conditions of use.
V; When the supporter is iny position it is located lupon ,thelleg above the kneewth the band-1 in the rear and the elastic 5 to the front. The supporter may be-drawn upon or off the leg insubstantially the same man# neras` the usual garter, or if preferred, may v to be supported in a comfortable and neat way and4 prevents their slipping down on the limb which is objectionable. e y
' Having thus described the invention, what A hose supporter comprising a semicircular band ofrigid material, a rigidupwardly and forwardly jincline'darm formed integralwith and at one 'end of said band, saidy arml having means at'its upper end to engage the top of the hose to/support the same, and a strip ofelastic extending he tween the ends or' vthe rband yand cooperating with the bandv 'to formI a circular garter to support the lowerl part of thevhose andthe upwardly inclined arm.. 5 f' In testimony whereof 1 affix ture in presence of two Witnesses. f
