To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH lanes, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and usefree tone arm to close and open the motor circuit. In the embodiment shown it may be used with any make of motor or tone arm. I have shown my invention embodied in a phonograph mechanism in which the starting and stopping ofthe rotation of the record table is caused by the closing and opening of the circuit which supplies current to energize the motor by means of which the record table-is rotated. My invention consists primarily in an automatic switch which is constructed and arranged to be operated in a very simple manner without the use of electromagnets or other auxiliary mechanism to open and close it. My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings, inwhich Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mechanism embodying my. invention, the support upon which the various parts are mounted being in section. I

which may be of any ordinary construction,
preferably one of a kind now well known as a universal motor which will operate either by direct or alternating current. On the motor shaft is mounted a pulley 11 around which runs a belt 12 connecting with-a pulley 13 on a shaft 14: on which is a worm 15. This Worm engages with a worm gear 16 carried by the shaft 7 of the record table. By this means the record table is rotated. The shaft 7 carries a worm 1-7 which meshes with a worm gear 18 on shaft 19 suitably supported by the frame 6 and carrying at its further end a worm 20 meshing with a gear 21. The construction and arrangement of these parts is such that a very slow speed is imparted to the gear 21 in the direction of the arrows.
This gear 21 is mounted on a stud 22 which is supported in the frame 6. It has a shoulder 23 which rests on the frame 6 and its lower end which passes through the frame is threaded and held in place by a nut 230. Resting on the frame 6 and around the stud 22 is a bushing 220 on a flange from which rests the gear 21. An arm 34:, carrying at its end a block 25 of insulated material, also is mounted to turn'on the bushing 220. Above the arm 34 and compressed between it and the collar 36 is a helical spring 35. The collar 36 is attached to the bushing 220 by a set screw 37. This construction is such that a frictional engage electrically with a contact 29 and the block 31 has a similar screw 32 insulated from the arm 5, which connects electrically with the contact 30. These contacts are preferably made of platinum. Between the bottom of the hub portion of the arm 5 and the top of the collar 36 is a light Wire spring 38 one end of which engages the block 25 and the -other apparatus to be variedaccorclingto the type end the block 31 or the end of the lever As the various parts marked 39 are merely used for regulating the speed of rotation of the rotary table and are common to various machines of this kind and form no part of my invention, they are not described. Itwilhbeseen thatany separation of the contacts 29' and-30 will 'break the circuit which feeds the motor, and this separation is possible because the contacts are mounted .on'the two separately controlled arms-5and 34;. One of these arms 5 is operated by the tone arm and the other by the gear-21 with which it is held in frictional contact by the spring35. The parts are so proportioned and arranged that While the gear is constantly moving in the direction of: the arrow it will carry with it the arm 34: and its con- -taot29. Then'eedle willat thesame time be moving in the spiral groove in the record andthe g'roovewill draw the tone arm 0on stantly towards the centre of the record, the tone arm continually moving the arm 5 so that its contact 30 will follow after the contact 29 in engagement with'it. When, however, the end ofthe spiral groove in the record is reached the tone arm will stop its movement and hence the arm 5 and its con tact 29 will stop while'the gear 21 and arm 34' will continue to move sufficiently to 'break :the contact between'29, 30, and cut 0d the current. fromv the motor.

It will be seen that the mechanism is simple and costs but little to build, and will not easily get out oforderyand it willb'e evident to one skilled inthe art that my invention may be otherwise embodied.
