DEODORIZER.
Application filed February 9, 1923.
To 4.17/ zic/7mm t 1W frg/ concern:
Be it known that I, Grifo F. STUERZER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee. in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Deodorizersg and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to deodorizers and is particularly directed to an automatically operated deodorizer.
, @bjects of this invention are to provide a deodorizer which may be automatically operated by the opening of a door to deodorize the room, such as a toilet, in which objectionable odors occur, to provide a deodorizer which may be built as a unit of attractive and compact design, and to provide a deodorizer which will effectively diffuse the deodorant or disinfectant in the air in the room.
Further objects are to provide a deodorant which is of substantial and sturdy construction, which isadapted to removably receive a standard atomizer, and which is so constructed that its parts are protected from dust and dirt. y
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the deodorizer in position, with the cover and the container of the atomizer removed for clearness of illustration.
Figure 2 is a sectional view substantially on the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the deodorizer comprises a casing having a back 1, provided with an upper flange 2 and a lower flange 3 and a removable cover, including a front portion 4L and side portions 5. A pair of vertical shafts 6 and 'i' extend upwardly through the bottom flange of the casing and are provided with eccentrics 8 and 9, respectively, adjacent their upper ends. Eccentric straps 10 surround these eccentrics and are provided with plungers 11 which terminate in presser plates 12. Supporting brackets 13 are mounted beneath the eccentrics and are provided with horizontal flanges 14 and with vertical flanges 15, which respectively guide the vertical shafts and the plungers 11. A
Serial No. 617,386.
convenient way of supporting the eccentric straps is furnished by providing flanges 16 upon the lower portions of the eccehtrics.` such straps freely sliding upon these flanges.` as illustrated in Figure 1, the nut or securing member 17 slightly overlapping the eccentric straps, as indicated in Figure 3, and preventingl their displacement upwardly. Each of the shafts 6 and 7 are provided with pins 18, beneath the lower flange 3, which limits their upward motion.
The shafts 6 and 7 are adapted to be simultaneously partially rotated by any suit-- able means, as for instance,. levers 19 and 20 secured to the respective shafts and connected by the link .2l-such link being urged by means of a spring 22 in a direction to cause the separation of the presser plates 12. In order to prevent too rapid motion of the apparatus when actuated by the spring, a. dash pot 23 is provided. A plunger 24:, located within the dash pot, is connected by the piston rod 25 with alever 26 mounted upon the shaft -the dash pot being pivotally mounted, as indicated in Figure 1, to accommodate the angular changes or rocking motion of the lever 26.
A standard type of atomizer is removably positioned within the casing and comprises a container 27 for the deodorant or disinfectant, a bulbg 28 and an atomizing nozzle 29 projecting vfrom -the usual thickened or rounded portion 30 of the atomizer. The removable cover is provided with an aperture 31 through which the nozzle partially projects, as indicated in Figure 2. This atomiZer may conveniently be retained in position by means of a thumb-screw 32 passing through the upper fiange 2 and provided with a concave lower end cooperating with the rounded portion 30 of the atomizer, as indicated in Fig. 2. lf desired, a cushioning pad 33 may be provided beneath the container 27 of the atomizer, as such container is usually of fragile material, such as glass.
In order to provide for the automatic actuation of the atomizer, a. member 34 is loosely pivotally mounted upon one of the shafts and in the form illustrated on shaft 6. This member `is provided with a shoulder 35, adapted to contact with the pin 18 and is urged in such direction by means of a spring 36 (see Figure 1). The member is further provided with one or more outwardly projecting arms 37, which are in the nature of cams and are adapted to be engaged by a roller38,carried by 2,. bracket 39 secured to the movable door/l0. lt is to benotedthat either ot the shafts 6 or .7 may be employed as the d rivine snatt by positioning the menf ber 34 thereon and relocating the bracket 39. rl`his may be readily accomplished to accommodate different styles of doors, the casing being as readily secured in any desired loA cation by means ofthe apertured ears 4l, which are adapted to be attached to the door casing 42 by means of screws, as shown.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: lVhen the door is opened, the roller 38 contacts with the cam member or arni 3T, and rotates the member 8. This member freely moves against the action of the spring, the shoulder 35 moving away from the pin 18 and immediately snapping back into position against the pin after the roller has passed beyond. TWhen the door closes the roller 38 again contacts with the arm 37,
but upon the opposite side, and causes the shouder 35 to press against the pin 18, thereby rotating the vertical shaft 6. Motion of this shaft, as perviously described, is communicated to the shaft 7, and as such shafts rotate the presser plates 12 are 'forced towards each other, thereby compressing` the bulb 28 and causing the deodorant to be sprayed outwardly through the nozzle 29 and diffused through the air in the room.
It is to be understood that by an obvious rearrangement of pin 18 and shoulder 35, the apparatus may be caused to function when the door is opened.
It will be seen that a deodorizer has been provided which is automatically actuated by the opening of a door in a simple manner, and that such deodorizer will effectively accomplish the desired purpose of diffusing a deodorant through the air in the room.
lt is to be understood that the term deodorant7 is intended to have its usual meaning and as well to include disinfectants and other similar material.
Although one specific form of the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the in vention may be variously inodiiied and is lo be limited only as set `forth in the appended claims.
l claim:
l. A deodorizer comprising a easingadapted to be attached adjacent a door, a bracket adapted to be attached to said door. a atoniizer removably held within said casing and having an air compressingT bulb, a pair oi" vertical shafts provided with eecentiics and mounted within said casing. a pair ot plates positioned upon opposite sides ot said bulbs and actuated troni said ce centrics to compress said bulb, and cani means carried by one of said shafts and adapted to be operated b v said bracket, whereby when said door is moved said bull is compressed to thereby operate said atoinneer.
2. A deodorizer comprising a casing adapted to be attached adjacent a door. a pair of vert-ical shafts carried within said casing, with one ot' said shafts projecting therefrom, eccentrics mounted upon said shafts, a pair of presser plates nornmlly spaced apart and adapted to be moved towards each other by said eccentrics, resilient means tending to maintain said place in spaced relation. means connected to said door Jfor rotating said shafts, an atolnizer having a body portion, including a container and having an air compressing bulb, a screw passing through the upper portion ot said casing and bearing upon said body portion to retain it in position, said bull) being positioned between said presser plates, whereby upon movement oi the door the bulb is compressed and the atomizer operated.
In testimony that I claiin the :foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at l\'[ilwaul ec. in the county of Milwaukee, and State el llVisconsin.
