Be it known that we, STANLEY LEECH and GRANviLm LEECH, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne .and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wringers, of'which the following 1s a specification, reference being had of the clothes is retarded. In the operation of clothes wringers of the roll or roller type wherein one of the rolls or rollers is under spring pressure or tension and both the rollsor rollers are driven to cause clothes, fabrics and other matter to pass between the 'rolls or rollers, indurate objects, as buttons or pins, are often encountered resulting either in injury to the rolls or the clothes, or else theprogress rfeeding clothes and fabrics to the rolls the fingers or sleeve are sometimes caught between the rolls, resulting in injury particularly to the lingers. In either lnstance, it is essential to immediately release the roll or rolls under tension and for this purpose various quick release devices have been invented.
This invention relates to a quick release device for a tensioned or spring pressed wringer roll, and the rimary object of-our invention is to provi e such a device that besides being used to quickly release the tension or pressure on a wringer rollV may also be used to increase the tension .or pressure on the wringer roll, the device being simple, durable and readily accessible to the Aoperator of a wringer.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a wringer of the roll -type with roll separating means by which a tensioned or spring pressed roll may be quickly separated from another roll, and such means con- -tributes to an expeditious operation of the quick releasing device of the wringer,
A'further object of our invention is to accomplish the above results and numerous advantages by a construction that will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wringer, partly broken away and partly in section f Fig. 2 is an enlargedvhorizontal sectional view taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1;

In the drawing, tie reference numeral 1 denotes a hollow olie-piece wringer frame sectional view taken on having depending parallel bifurcated or slotted side arms 2 and 3, said arms having the lower ends thereof open so that spindles 4 and 5 of rolls 6 and 7 respectively may beplaced in the arms 2 and 3. The rolls 6 and 7 are of' a conventional wringer type and' the spindles 4 and 5 -have gear wheels 8 adapted to mesh, while the spindle 5 has a protruding end 9 that may be provided with a detachable crank or to which a suitable source of power may be connected. The gear wheels 8 are preferably inclosed-b a casing 10 integral with the arm 2 and when the spindle 9 of the roll 7 is driven, the vroll I 6 isv rotated in`an opposite direction from the roll 7 so that clothes may be movedbetween said rolls or backed therefrom.
4The spindle 5 of the roll 7 is supported'on bearings 11 mounted in the arms 2 and 3, and between the spindles 4 and 5 are roll separating means, preferably in the form of coiled expanslon sp'rn s 12 which are adapted to elevate the spin 1e 4 of the roll- 6 relative to the s indle 5 of the roll 7.
Engaging t e spindle 4.0i the roll 6 are bearings 13 and engaging said bearings are the ends of a bowed spring 14 having its' middle portion fulcrumed or loosely mounted in a head 15 loose on the lower end of a spring tensioning rod 16, the lower end of the rod 16 being rotatably held Ain the head 15.
SuitablyA attached to the top of the frame 1 is a threaded sleeve 17v through which the rod 16 extends. On the upper end of the rod 16 is a head 18 and adjacent said head is a transverse pin 19.
Adjustable-on the threaded sleeve 17 is a screw member or nut 20 provided with a cap 21 through which the rod 16 extends and said cap has opposed handles 22 'by which the screw member can be easily rotated 0r turned in either direction. The cap walls24t of said slot constitute shoulders or ing beveled walls 27 permitting of the ends of the pin 19 easily riding into and out of the recesses 26.
'As shown in Fig. 1, the main spring 14 is under tensiondioldingr the roll 6 in proximity to or against the roll 7, with the springs 12 under tension. The'man spring le may be placed under additional tension by turning the screw member 20- in a clockwise direction, because the shoulders of the cap 21 engage the ends of the transverse in 19.
p Should it be desired to quickly release the tension of the spring 14 and permit the springs -12 to separate the rolls 6 and 7 the screw member 20 is turned or partially 4rotated in a counterclockwise direction. This may be accomplished by quickly striking either lone of the handles 22. iWhen either handle is. struck a blow toturn the screw v member in a counterclockwise direction the shoulders 25 are carried away from the ends of the transverse pin and the shoulders 24 Y brought into engagement with the ends of said pin.
