  • This invention relates to non-skid devices for use with the tires of vehicle wheels. It is illustrated and described herewith in connection with the means of attaching such non-skid devices where they are composed wholly or in part of chain links. It has for one object to provide a means of attachment which can be easily and rapidly put to use without the assistance of any tools whatsoever. Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chain Attachments, of, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to non-skid devices for use with the tires of vehicle wheels. it is illustrated and described herewith in connection with the means of attaching such non-skid devices where they are composed wholly or in part of chain links. It has for one object to provide a means of attachment which can be easily and rapidly put to use without the assistance of any tools whatsoever. Other objects will appear from time to time throughout the specification claims. 7

A is a wire link bent in a roughly U shaped form, having the two oppositely relative ends A A which are bent inwardly to form hooks.
B is a side chain of the non-skid device. In one end is mounted the link A, and in parts in the other end is mounted the receivin link B, having the more or less fiat side B adapted to be engaged by the hooks A A of the member 1 i C is a cross chain adapted to be attached at either ends to side chains B B. Mounted at each end of the cross chains are the links A adapted to engage links in the chains B B.
The use and operation of this invention are as follows: 7
For the purposes of the present illustration the invention has been shown in con nection with a. non-skid device comprising the following elements:
Two side chains made up of chain links adapted to fit the vehicle wheels and lie along its sides opposite to each other. These side chains are connected at appropriate intervals by a number of cross chains secured at their ends to the side chain. The attaching device of the present invention is designed for use in joining the ends of the side chains and in joining the cross chains to the side chains. For both of these purposes it is desirable to have a means of attachment which can be readily ,used or removed without any tools. It is oneof the purposes of the present invention to produce such means.
The use of the present invention in the attachment of the cross chains will first be described. The cross chain is subject to the greatest wear and occasionally breaks, and therefore, a new chain must be substituted. This is done as follows:
A piece of link chain of the appropriate length is prepared. In each end of this chain the fastening link is secured. This is done by threading the end of the fastening link through the end of the link chain. The cross chain is now ready for attachment to the side chains. Then one of the hooks of the attaching line is then slipped through the appropriate link in the side chain, and the attaching link is turned so as to cause each of the hooks to overlie a side of the link of the side chain. Thus the cross chain is attached to the side chain.
When actually in use the tension on the cross chain is such as to prevent its being turned with relation to the link of the side chain sulficiently to free it therefrom, but when not in use suflicient slack exists to enable the o erator to turn the attaching link with re ation to the link of the side chains so as to free it. By this means the 7 cross chain may readily be removed or attached to the side chains, and thus the broken cross chain may be repaired without the use of tools.
Theme of this attachment for the side chains is similar to its use above described. The attaching link is threaded into the link at the ine of the side chain. It is then slipped over the link at the other end of the side chain, and it is turned so that its two hooked ends overlie that link. The tension on the side chain when the vehicle is'in motion is sufficient to prevent the turning or" the attaching links with relation to the link which it engages, and so is sufii cient to prevent accidental separation of the parts.
v -Although I have shown an operating invention, still it will be obvious that many changes both of form, shape, and relation of "parts may be made without departing materiallyfrom the spirit of my invention, andtherefore, I wish that my showing be taken as in afsense diagrammatical.
In particular the attaching link of this invention might be used wherever it is necessary or desirable to fasten together a pluralityof chain links, thus it might be used in a harness as a belt buckle or asa means for fastening the traces of the harness to a wagon. It might be used in many other forms of connection where some connection is made with a ring, link 'or loop.
I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture a non-skid tire chain attachment formed fromv a plurality of portions of chain, said portionsseparably joined together by means of a plurality 'of members each'comprising a link shaped in the form of an open loop and having at its ends oppositely facing hook members permanently spaced apart.
2. As a new article of manufacture a nonskid. tire chain attachment formed from a plurality of portions of chain, said portions separably joined together by means of a plurality of members each comprising a link shaped in the form of an open loop and having at its ends oppositely facing hook members, said hook members facing inwardly toward the closed side of said loop and being permanently spaced apart.
3. As a new article of manufacture a nonskid tire chain attachment formed from a plurality of portions of chain, said portions separably joined together by means of a plurality of members each comprising a link shaped-in the form of an open loop and having at its ends oppositely'facing hook members, each of said hook members lying substantially in a single plane and being permanently spaced apart.
4:. As a new article of manufacture a nonskid tire chainattachment formed from a plurality of portions of chains,said portions including a pair of side chains runi'iing about the circumference of thewheel and joined by a plurality of cross chains each fastened at each end to one of the side chains and running cross-wise of the tread of the tire or wheel, all of said portions separably joined together by means of a plurality of members, each comprising a link shaped in the form of an open loop and having at its ends oppositely facing hook members, said hook members facing inwardly toward the closed side of said' loop.
