Be it known that l, ERNnsT C. SoHnAnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made an Invention Appertaining to a Gas Burner; and T do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference, marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to gas burners of the type adapted to emit gas under high pressure, and intended more particularly for use in the manufacture of glassware to burn oii" or fire finish portions of the same.
The object of the invention is the provision of a burner of the class described which is simple and efficient in its operation, and which includes a novel and important arrangement of pilot-light orifices for the discharge of low pressure gas in combination with a series of orifices for the discharge of high pressure gas, whereby to enhance the practicability and commercial value of burners of this character.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a burner embodying the invention with parts broken away, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an annular body member having an annu lar flange 2 projecting inward and upward from its inner side in spaced relation to its edges and having a recess 3 in its inner bottom edge portion with the bottom of the recess spaced slightly from the inner bottom edge portion of the flange 2. The upwardly projecting edge or lip portion oi the flange 2 terminates in a plane which is below the top or the member 1.

corresponding to the flange 2 and projecting inward and downward with its free edge or lip portion terminating over the free edge of the flan 2 in slightly spaced relation thereto, so t at an annular passage is formed between the lip portions of the two flanges. The inner .top edge portion of the member 1 is provided with a recess 7, the bottom of which is spaced slightly above the top surface of the inner end portion of the her 6.
Duplicate bottom and top plates and 9 of annular form are mounted at their outer edge portions in the respective recesses 3 and 7 of the members 1 and 4 and extend inward therefrom over the adjacent inner end portions of the flanges 2 and 6 and terminate in respective flanges 10 and 11, which extend inward in converging relation at the adjacent sides of the flanges 2 and 6, but in slightly spaced relation thereto so that an annular passage 12 is provided be tween the flanges 2 and 10 and a similar passage 13 is provided between the flanges 6 and 11. The outlet ends of the passages 12 and 13 are disposed respectively below and above the space between the lips of the flanges 2 and 6 in adjacent relation thereto.
The annular chamber which is formed by the member 1 and flanges 2 and 6 is divided [ill into an outer main or distributing annular chamber 14 and an inner annular high pressure chamber 15 by an annular partition 16 which is set at its top and bottom edges into recesses rovided therefor in the flanges 2 and 6. he member 16 is provided near each of its upper and lower edges with an annular series of small openings 17 extending around the same and opening communication between the chambers 14 and 15. The chamber 14% is also in communication with the passages 12 and 13 through a few small openings 18 provided in the flanges 2 and 6. The maximum capacity of the openings 18 is very materially less than that of the openings 17 so that the gas in the chamber 15 will be practically at the same pressure as the gas in the main pressure chamber 14, while the pressure of gas in the passages 12 and 13 will be very materially re need from that in the main pressure chamber, A supply pipe 19 for mixed gas and air or gas and oxygen is tapped into the member 1 in communication with the main ,chamber 14:.
A flat annular comb-like member 20 is mounted in the high pressure chamber 15 with its outer or back edge preferably in contact with the inner side of the annular partition 16 between the two sets of perforations 17 therein and with its teeth projecting closely into the space between the lips of the flanges 2 and 6. The spaces or notches 21 between the comb teeth provide a plurality of radial discharge passages from the high pressure chamber 15 through the space between the lips of the flanges 2 and 6. Itis thus evident that the annular comblike member 20 serves to form a multiplicity of discharge openings for the high pressure gas from the chamber 15. Theparts of the burner are secured together in assembled relation by a plurality of bolts or screws 22 which extend. through the members 1, 4c, 8 and 9 and clampthe same together.
It is evident in the use of my burner that gas under considerable pressure enters the main chamber 1 1 and is caused to be distributed evenly therearound and to pass through the openings 17 in the partition 16 into the high pressure chamber 15, both above and below the ring-comb 20, thus causing a splitting of the gas into a multiplicity of jets as it discharges from the chamber 15 through the passages 21 of the comb. A small portion of the gas in the main or distributing chamber 14: passes through the openings 18 into the passages 12 and 13 and discharges from the annular outlet ends thereof above and below the points of discharge of the gas from the chamber 15 and in adjacent relation thereto. The pressure of the gas in the passages 12 and 13 is reduced to such an extent over that in the main chamber 14 as to cause the gas discharge from such passages, when lighted, toform a very small annular pilot flame above and below the high pressure gas discharging orifices 12 so that the gas discharged from such orifices is ignited. close to the-same. The lighted jets of gas from the orifices 21 shoot into the central portion of the burner opening with considerable force and form ver hot and intense flames which are highly e cient for burning-off or fire finishing portions of glassware.
I wish it understood that invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A ring burnerof the, class described, having an annular main gas chamber for communication with a source of gas supply, an annular high pressure chamber in communication with the main chamber and having provision for the discharge of gas thereanre iss from toward the burner axis, and gas discharge passages at opposite sides of the line of discharge of gas from the high pressure chamber toward the same and in low pressure communication with the main gas chamber.
2. A burner of the class described having a main gas chamber for communication with a source of gas supply, a pressure chamber in communication with the main chamber and having a discharge slot, a comb-like member projecting into the discharge slot of the high pressure chamber to divide it into aplurality of discharge orifices, said burner having gas discharge passages at opposite sides of the line of discharge of gas from the high pressure chamber directed toward such discharge and in low pressure communication with the main gas chamber.
3. A ring burner of the class described having an annularmain gas chamber around its center for communication with a source of gas supply, an annular high pressure chamber around the burner center at one side of the main chamber and in high pressure communication therewith and having an annular series of radially disposed gas discharge orifices and annular passages above and below the high pressure chamber in low pressure communication with the main chamber and forming annular discharge openings above and below the discharge orifices of the high pressure chamber.
4:. A ring burner having annular body portions with annular flanges projecting inwardly therefrom in converging relation to form an annular space therebetween with a narrow discharge opening between the lip portions of the flanges, means dividing said space into an outer annular distributing chamber adapted to have communication with a source of gas supply and into an inner high pressure chamber in high pressure communication with the main chamber, and annular members clamped to the upper and lower sides of the body portion of the burner and cooperating with the flanges to form annular passages at the outer sides thereof in low pressure communication with the main chamber and having annular discharge openings above and below the discharge passage between the flange lips in adjacent relation thereto.
5. A ring burner having annular body portions with annular flanges projecting inwardly therefrom in converging relation to form an annular space therebetween, means dividing said space into an outer annular distributing chamber adapted to have communication with a source of gas supply and into an inner high pressure chamber in high pressure communication with the main chamber, the high pressure chamber having an annular outlet passage between the lip portio of the flanges, and annular members clamped to the upper and lower sides of the body ortion of the burner and cooperating wit the flanges to form annular pasagesat the outer sides thereof in low pressure communication with the main chamber and having annular discharge openings above and below the outlet passage of the high pressure chamber adjacent thereto. 6. A ring burner having annular body portions with annular flanges projecting inwardly therefrom in converging relation to form an annular space therebetween, means dividing said space into an outer annular distributing chamber adapted to have communication with a source of gas supply and into an inner high pressure chamber in high pressure communication with the main chamber, the high pressure chamber having an annular outlet passage between the lip portions of the flanges, and annular members clamped to the upper and lower sides of the body portion of the burner and cooperating with the flanges to form annular passages at the outer sides thereof in low pressure communication with the main chamber and having annular discharge openings above and below the outlet passage of the high pressure chamber adjacent thereto, and an annular comb member disposed in the high pressure chamber and having its teeth projecting into the discharge passage of said chamber to divide the same into a plurality of radial discharge orifices.
7. A ring burner comprising upper and lower detachably connected members having annular flanges projecting inward therefrom in converging relation to form an annular space with -a discharge passage between the lip portions of the flanges, said space adapted to have communication with a source of gas supply, a partition extending around within the space and dividing it into an outer annular distributing chamber and an inner high pressure chamber into communication with each other through the partition, the latter having a narrow annular discharge passage betwen the lip portions of the flanges, annular plates mounted on the outer sides of the members and having flanges extending inward in converging relation at the outer sides of the flanges to cooperate therewith to form low pressure passages therebetween with narrow annular discharge openings above and below the discharge passage from the high pressure chamber, the flanges having openings forming restricted communication between the distributing chamber and the low pressure passages, and an annular comb member disposed within the'highpressure chamber and having its teeth projecting outward through the discharge passage thereof to divide such passage into a plurality of narrow radial discharge orifices, and means for clamping the plates and members together.
