CHICAGO, ILLrNors, A Conroe-Arron or Yrnnrlvors. y f y GARTER FASTENEB.
Application IedAprIQS, 1923.` Serial No.l 633,863.
ToV all 107mm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAX J. LrnenNsTsrN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garter Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to garters or hose supporters of the type worn by men, wherein a strap or band has the ends detachably fastened together so that it may be eadily applied around or removed from the egs.
The principal objects of my invention are to improve the fastener by means of which the ends of the garter strap or band are con nected together; to' prevent wearing of the goods at the point where the fastener is applied; and to hold the fastener in the properv upright position.
On the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hose supporter embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 an enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings which show a popular type of mens garter, the reference numeral 1 indicates a pad which has the usual hose supporter 2 depending therefrom and adapted to be attached to the stocking or hose. A strap or band 3 is attached to the pad 1 at one side, and has a suitable clasp 4 at the other end whereby the free end of the strap or band is attached to the opposite side of the pad 1. For affording this latter connection with the pad 1, a headed stud 5 is attached to the pad by mea-ns of a tab 6 which consists of a short piece of tape which is looped through a slot 7 in the base plate 8 of the stud 5 and has the two endsy secured to the pad 1 by the stitching 9 around the edge of the pad. A fabric loop 10, which may be of the same material as the strap or band 3 is likewisey secured to the edge of the pad 1 by means of the same stitching 9 so` as to enclose the base of the stud 5 and the tab 6, and this loop 10 is provided with a perforation having an eyelet 11 through which the stud 5 projects. The eyelet 11 is sufficiently large so that the head 12 of the stud will readily pass therethrough in assembling the garter or hose supporter, and the stem of the stud accordingly fits very loosely in the eyelet 11.r Moreover, the tab 6 which withstands the pull of the clasp 4 on the stud 5 holds the latter substantially atthe centerfof the eyelet 11, and there is therefore no` strain or pulling upon the eyelet 11 which would tend to pull it loose from the fabric. Theprovision of this eyelet also serves to facilitate the assembling of the-garter as the head -12 of the stud 5 can be inserted through the eyelet more readily than through a small hole in the goods, such as heretofore provided. i
The frame member 4 at the loose end of the strap or band 3 has an open sided loop 13 which is adapted to engage under the head 12 of the stud 5 for fastening the garter on the leg, and the length of the stud 5 is such that the eyelet 11 and loop 13 take up substantially the entire distance between the base plate 8 and the head 12 of the stud. Thus the loop 13 is held by the eyelet 11 close against the head 12 of the stud as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and holds the stud 5 against tipping laterally under the pulling strain of the clasp 4.
While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which is to be determined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a fastening device for garters and Y the like, the combination of a headed stud, a fabric covering having an aperture through which the stud projects, an eyelet secured to the fabric covering in said aperture and loosely embracing the stud, av
clasp adapted to detachably engage the stud between its head and the eyelet, and means connected tothe base of the stud so as towithstand lateral. pull of the clasp on the stud and hold the stud out of Contact with the eyelet.
2. In a fastening device for garters and the like, the combination of a cast-off stud lcomprising a stem having a head atone end and a lateral extending base at the other end, a fabric covering overlying the basev and having an aperture through which the stem of the stud projects, a clasp adapted to detachably engage the stem of the stud, an eyelet secured to the fabric `covering in the aforesaid aperture thereof andrencircling the stem of the stud and serving as a spacer between the base of the stud and means connected to the base of the stud ,so as to withstand lateral pull of the clasp on the Stud and'hold the latter substantially at the center of and out of` contact With the eyelet.
3. In a garter, the combination of a pad having hose supporting means depending therefrom, a strap secured to one side of the pad andfhaving a clasp at the end provided Withan open sided loop, a tab secured to and projecting from the other side of the pad and having a stud at the outer extremity with which the open sided loop of the clasp is adapted'to be engaged, a fabric loop secured to the pad so as to enclose the aforesaid tab and having an aperture through Which the stud projects, and an eyelet secured to the fabric loop in said aperture and loosely Surrounding the Stud, said eyelet being provided with an 'opening there through throughwhich the head of the stud is insertable in assembling the garter.
