Description

Dec. 4 1923.
D. M GlNTY CABLE HANGER Filed Sept. 17, 1921 Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
DONALD K. MGGINTY, OF MARION, OHIO.
CABLE HANGER.
Application filed September 17, 1921. Serial No. 501,271.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DONALD K. MoGINTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cable hanger andone of its objects is to provide a device -of this character which may be readily engaged with a supporting messenger wire, embracing a cable for suspending the cable from the wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger so constructed that the hanger will clamp the messenger wire and will also clamp the cable, preventing play of the cable in the hanger as well as preventing swinging of the hanger upon the wire.
And another object is to provide a device which may be readily detached sothat the device maybe used over and over again.
Other and incident-a1 objects will appear iereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a pair of my improved'hangers in connection with a messenger wire and cable, the cable being illustrated in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the de vice, and,
Figure 3 is a sectional View. showing the manner in which the device is applied.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, I employ a substantially U-shaped hanger body 10 which is preferably formed of suitable resilient sheet metal and is provided with spaced sides 11 and 12. As best shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, the side 11 is curved inwardly at its free end portion to provide a reentrant jaw 18 lying between the sides of the body, and formed in the side 11 is a longitudinally extending medial slot 14 terminating short of the free end of the jaw 13 to define a pintle 15. Near its free end, the side 12 of the body is provided with an opening 16. Swingingly mounted upon the jaw 13 is a substantially U-shaped latch 17 which is also preferably formed of suitable resilient sheet metal. At its inner end portion this latch is looped around the pintle 15, as shown at 18, and is thus swingingly mounted upon said pintle while at its free end the latch is bent to define an angularly' disposed hook 19, the free end ofithe latch being adapted to extend through the opening 16 of the arm 12 so that-said hook may,
as shown, be engaged with the arm. In this tion with a messenger wire 20 and cable 21,
the cable being illustrated in dotted lines. In applying the device, the'hanger body is first arranged to embrace the cable, the body being held so that the sides 11 and 12 thereof project upwardly from the cable. The latch 17 is then swung to approximately the position shown in Figure 3, when the jaw 13 of the side 11 of thebody is engaged over the wire 20. The latch is then swung through the slot 14: over the wire to the position shown in Figure 2, when the free end of the latch is inserted through the openin 16 of the arm 12 of the body and the hoo 19 of said latch engaged with the arm. The I latch when so disposed, will thus be arranged to extend over the wire 20 forming a jaw cooperating with the jaw 13 to clamp the wire therebetween. At the same time, the latch will serve to hold the hanger body clamped about the cable, the resiliency of the sides 11 and 12 of the body serving to revent accidental disen a ement of the latch. Accordingly, the cable will be tightly held within the hanger while the hanger will grip the messenger wire to prevent swinging of the hanger thereon. I thus bent at its free end to provide a jaw lying between the sides, there being a slot in one of the sides and an opening in the other of said sides, and a latch swingingly'mounted upon said jaw for movement through said slotto engage at its free end tliroughsaid provide. a highly efficient device for the puropening, connecting the sides and forming ,g V v 7 1,476,093
