UNITED STATES- 1,475,994 PATENT OFFICE.
HOMER M. HAVENS, OI COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SEAGRA'VE COMPANY 4 OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, CORPORATION OF OHIO.
MEANS FOR ramme PUMPS.
Application filed February 16, 1923. Serial No. 619,349.
drives'the main pump and also has means for connecting the driving power with the priming pump shaft when the main pump is to be primed and disconnecting the power from the primin pump shaft when the riming of the mam pump has been effected.
he object of the present invention is to. provide improved means whereby the driving power may be manually connected with the priming pump and means whereby such power is automatically disconnected from the priming pump when the'main pump has been primed.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing- .Figure 1 is largely a view in side elevation with such parts in section as will illustrate details of the present invention.
. Fig. 2 is a detail looking toward the left of Flg.1 1 at the clutch operating lever.
In t e views 5 designates the main pump which is of any usual impeller type employed in fire extinguishing engines. The 1118,111 pump, as shown, has a suction and a discharge opening located as indicated by the words in Fig. 1. The pump impeller shaft is designated 6 and said shaft is provided with a pinion 7 engaged by a spur gear 8 on a sleeve. 9 adapted to be connected with a power shaft 10 by means of a clutch 11. The pinion 7 has its right hand.
face provided with a jaw clutch member 7 The priming pump 18 shown at 12, it being communicatingly connected with the main pump by means of a pipe 13, and a casing 13 mounted on and communicating with the shell of the mainpump.
i The shaft 14 of the priming pump is perforated longitudinally and through said perforation is extended a rod .15 having connected to its inner or left hand end by means of pin 16 a jaw clutch member 17 to cooperate with the clutch member 7 The clutch member 17 has a splined sliding connection wlth the inner end of the priming pump shaft 14 so that when the clutch member 17 is turned by the clutch member 7 the shaft of the priming pump is rotated. At its outer end the rod 15 is swive'lly connected with a hand lever 19 fulcrumed at 20, said lever being adapted to be operated by pressure in the main pump to release the clutch as hereinafter described. I
The casing 13 is equipped with a flexible diaphragm 21 held down by a spring 22 on a pin 23' provided witha cup shaped end 24, said pin projecting upward through the casing 13. F ulcrumed by means of a shaft 25 on abracket 26 on top of the casi'ng13 is a lever 27 connected at one end to the upper endof the pin 23 and connected at its other end to the stem 28 of a valve 29 arranged within the casing 13* and adapted to open and close the pipe 13. The shaft 25 of the lever 27 has aflixed to one end thereof a crank arm 30 and to the free end of the latter is hinged a rod 31 extended through an eye 32 in the hand lever 19. The free end of the rod 31 is threaded to receive a nut 33 which is adapted to be adjusted and fixed by a jam nut 34, said nut 33 constituting a lug adapted to draw on the hand lever to disconnect the priming pump operating clutch when the main pump has been primed. The character 35 designates a screen to prevent sand, sticks and other objectionable solids from passing from the main pump into the priming pump. p
The operation is this: Assuming'thepower shaft 10 is being driven and the clutch 11 engaged therewlth thehandle end of the hand lever 19 is drawn outward by the at- I ward to disengagethe c utch members 7 and 17. When the pumping operation of the main pump is stopped the spring 22 opens the valve 29 and moves the rod and 10;; the ro 31left-Y-- with the primin the hand lever 31to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 thereby leaving the hand lever 19 free and in position for manually reenga 'ng said clutch members 7 and and its pump shaft, manually operable means or engaging said clutch means to connect the main ump shaft with the priming pump shaft or priming the main pump and automatically operable means for disengaging said clutch means when the main pump 13 primed.

2. In, combination, a main pum and its shaft, a priming pump therefor iaving' a priming connectlon therewith and having a shaft, means for driving the shaft of the. main pump, a clutch means .for operably connecting the shaft of the main pump with the priming pump shaft, manually operable 'means for engaging said clutch means to connect the main pump shaft with the priming pump shaft for priming the main pump,
and automatically operable means fordisengagingsaid clutch means when the main pump 15, primed. consisting of means actu by pressure of the in pump when aving a' so actuate said reg a emma 3. In combination, a main pump and its shaft, a priming .pump therefor having a priming connection therewith and having a shaft, a valve in said priming connection a clutch means for connecting the shaft 0 the main pump with the primingv pump shaft,'manu ally operable'means for engaging said clutch means to operably connect I the main pump shaft with the priming pump shaft for priming the main pump, and automatically operable means for dis-' engaging said clutch means when the main pump is primed consisting of means actuatedb pressure of the main pump when prime and means connected therewith for actuating the manually operable means,
said pressure actuated means also connected with said valve and adapted to close said valve.
4. In combination, a main pump and its shaft, a primin pump therefor having a priming connectlon therewith and also having a shaft, a valve in said priming connection, a clutch means for connecting the shaft of the main pump with the priming pump shaft, manually operable means for engaging said clutch means to operably connect the main fptump shaft with the priming pump sha an automatically operable means for' disengaging said clutch means when the main pum is primed consisting said manually operable means to disengage said clutch and means actuated by means of v pressure in the main pump when primed to d close said valve. 0 I; R.
