G. H. BROWN DRAG SAW Filed Jan. 8, 1921 3 Sheets-Sheet l Momo/ga Patented Nov. Z7, 1923.
PATENT GEORGE H. BROWN, OF PORTLAND, GREGON.
DRAG SAW.
Application filed January S, 1921. Serial 'o. 435,902.
To all wlw/m. t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BRowN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Drag Saw, of which the following is a specication.
rllhis invention relates to sawing machines, and more particularly to sawing machines of the drag saw type.
The primary object of theinvention is to provide a novel form of sawing machine7 wherein the saw and saw carriage move with respect to the log or material under operation, thereby eliminating the necessity o" providing complicated mechanism for handling heavy logs.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character wherein the saw carriage support may be adjusted vertically with respect to the log or work, to enable logs of various .diameters to be sawed.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure l illustrates a side elevational view of a sawing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 illustrates a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the sawing machine includes an upper section which is adjustably supported with respect to the bases 5 which are secured against movement, and which support the upper section or frame of the machine.
The frame of the machine is formed of the side rail supports 6 to which are secured the leg sections 7 adjustably connected to the being cut away to provide gnideways 11 for i the adjustable clamping member 12 which clamping member is provided with a longitudinal bore to accommodate the threaded rod 13, there being provided an operating handle 14 on one endl of the rod, whereby the rod may be rotated to move the log clamping member transversely of the machine.
rlhe clamping member also includes a vertical arm 15 in which operates the hook 16 which is pointed to pierce the log to prevent movement thereof.k At the rear oi' the hook 16 is formed a lurality of teeth 17 which cooperate with t e teeth 18 formed on one end of the handle 19 that operates to move the hook 16 vertically to grasp logs of various diameters.
Supported by the standard 9 is a suitable trackway which comprises side rails 6 and carrying tracks 20 and 21 on which tracks moves the carriage 22 which supports the engine 23 and drag saw 2a, the saw being operated by the engine.
The drag saw reciprocates on the rods 25 in a well known manner, the rods being supported by means of the supporting rod 26 which has connection with the carriage 22, the connection between the rod 26 and rods 25 being such as to permit of reciprocating motion of the drag saw, but restrict swinging motion thereof.
Forming a part of the engine is a fly wheel 27 that is supported on one end ot' the shaft 28 which carries sprocket wheel 29, the sprocket wheel 29 being designed to impart rotary motion to the sprocket wheel 30 through the medium ot the chain 3l, there being provided a crank arm 32 operated by the sprocket for imparting reciprocator'y motion to the drag saw 24.
On one end of the shaft 37 is supported a drum .38, which revolves rwith the shaft and accommodates the Aflexible member 39, one end of ithe flexible member being anchored to the frame as at 40 So that When the drum revolves to Wind the flexible member '39, the carriage will be moved towards one end of the frame to feed the saw through the log being savved.
In order that the drum 38 may be revolved at various speeds, a handle 4l is provided, which handle moves the `friction pulley 36 to various locations With respectto the Wheel 35 to cause the pulley 36 to engage the Wheel 35 at various locations onV its side face. Thus it will be seen that by -adjusting the speed of the drum, `the travel of the carriage may be regulated according to the stroke of the savv.
The rails 6 carrying tracks 2O 2l are supported on the vertically vadjustable horizontal bars 42, Which have lateral extensions 43 and 44, formed on the depending portion 45 to set up a binding laction between the bars 42 and their supporting standards 9. Formed in the depending portion 45is an opening vdesigned to accommodate the bolt -46 which also asses throughone of the openings 47 forme in the standards 9 to permit 42 and their supporting standards 9. the bars 42 to be held in various Apositions of adjustment.
It might `be further stated thatthe level 11 is provided on the guideway ll so that the machine may be properly positioned.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is i 1. In a sawing machine, a base including spaced members, guide Ways supported on the spaced members, adjustable clamping members movable in the guide Ways means for adjusting the clamping members longitudinally of the Guide Ways, a vertically adjustable .track section disposed above the clamping members, a carriage on the track section and adapted to travel thereon transversely of the guide Ways, and a. saw mounted on the carriage.
2. In a sawing machine, a base comprising spaced members formed with guide Ways,
.guideways In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ahxed my signature in the presence oftwo Witnesses.
