To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAnLEs H. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Coal and Gas Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
This invention is more particularly adapted for use in connection with a combination coal-and-gas range although it may be used in connection with a coal range.
The invention relates more particularly to the means for furnishing a supply of hot water, and contemplates the use of either the coal fuel in the range or a gas-heater or both for heating the water.
One of the objects of the invention is to obtain more efficient heating action from the gashcater either as auxiliary to the heat emanating from the coal fuel, or when used alone.
Another object of the invention is to eliminate the possibility of interference of the gas-heater with the combustion of the coal when both sources of heat areemployed for heating the water.
Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is the body of the stove or range, having the usual fire-box, 2, above the grate, 3, and a smoke-flue, 4. I
The outer side wall ofthe fire-box is formed by the inner side wall, 5, of a water-front comprising a hollow casting to which water is supplied through a pipe, 6, and from which water is delivered through a pipe, 7, said pipes, being connected with suitable openings in the rearend of the water-front.
The water-front is preferably provided with vertical fiues, 8.
Adjacent to the outer side wall and lower end wall of the water-front is mounted a gas-burner comprising a hollow casting L- shaped in cross-section as shown in Fig. 5, the horizontal portion, 9, of which burner extends below the water-front and is provided with jet openings, 10, directed toward the bottom of the water-front, as shown in Fig. 5.
The vertical portion, 11, of'the burner is provided with jet openings, 12, arranged in vertical rows, as shown in Fig. 6, which rows are directed toward the outer side wall, 1 1, of the water-front.
Between the neighboring rows of jet openings, 12, the vertical portion, 11, of the burner is provided with vent openings, 13, whereby a plentiful supply of air is delivered adjacent to the jets to facilitate combustion.
The burner is mounted in position by screws, 15, inserted through lugs, 16, into the front end wall, 17, of the range. I
Access may be had to the burner to light the same through an opening, 18, in the front wall, 17 of the range, which opening is closed by a door, 19.
The front wall, 17, of the range is pro vided with vent openings, 20, and 21, to insure a suflicient supply of air for the operation of the burner.
The space between thewater-front land the front end wall, 17, of the range, and through the fines, 8, forms a gas combustion chamber from the rear end of which extends an outlet fine, 22, leading to the smoke flue, 4, a part of the lower wall of which flue is formed by a rearward extension, 23, of'the water-'front'with which the outlet pipe, 7, is connected, whereby the heated water passing from the waterfront to the pipe, 7 is subjected to a final heating action due to the passage of the heated products of combustion from the burner, 5, thereover on their way to the smoke flue.
The outlet flue, 22, is controlled by a damper,2l, adapted to beoperated by means of a crank or handle,25.
Gas is supplied to the burner by means of a supply-pipe, 26, controlled by a valve, 27, and a gas-and-air mixer,'28.
The valve, 27 ,has an operating member or handle, 29, which can be operated directly by hand or through the medium of an extension rod, 30pextending from the valve handle, '29, across the frontzend of thestove and provided'with anoperating handle, 31, said rod being rotatively-mounted in'a bearing bracket,32, on "the ash-pit door, 33, as shown in Fig. 1.
The gas-valve handle, 29, and the handle or crank, 25, for cont-rolling'the damper, 241-, are connected together by a link, 34, whereby'both are opened in unison and closed in unison.
"When the range is being operated with coal fuel, the heat from the fire-box, 2, transmittedto the water-front, causing the same to supply hot water in the usual manner of operating coal ranges.
If it be desired to supplement the heat from the coal fuel by heat from the gasheater, the front door, 19, is opencd,-the gas is tnrnedon by operating the valve handle, 29, and the gas escaping through the jet openings, 10 and 12, in the burner ignited with a match or in any desired manner.

"The opening of the valve, 29, is accompanied by the opening of the damper, 24, through'the medinm'of-the connecting link, 34,as above explained, thus affording a free exit through the outlet fine, 22, fortheproducts of combustionfrom the gas heater to the smoke flue, 4;. The outletflne 22, being closed to the fire-box, 2, does not interfere with the combustion of coal fuel in the firebox in the usual manner.
The jets of flame emanating from the jet outlet, 10, in the horizontal portion, 9, of the burner being directed toward the bottom of the water-front cause the bottom of the water-front to be quickly heated, and also cause an upward draft through the fines, 8, of the heated products of combustion which are thusdistribnted over a wide area of surface of the water-front.
Thejets of-flame issuing from the jet openings, 12, of the vertical portion, 11, of the burner are directed toward the outer side wall of the water-front causing the same to be quickly heated and also cause an upward draft of-the heated products of combustion along the outer side-of the water-front between the water front and the end wall, 17 of therange.
A bathe-plate, 35, extends between the outer side wall of the water-front and'the front end wall, 17, of the range along the upper end ofthe water-front, causing the products of combustion from the jet openings, 12, to traverse the outer side wall of the water-front beforethey are permitted to escape at the rear end of said'baflle-plate into the flue, 22.
The products of combustion passing upward through the flnes, 8, enter the space above the water-front, and passing along the top of the water-front escape into the outlet flue, 22.
The burner casting is preferably provided with a notchor opening, 36, adjacent to the lower outer corner of-the water-front whereby the jets from the openings, 10, may be ignited from thejets from-the openings, 12.
The space above thewater-front is shut off from the fire box bya plate, 37, which extends from the front end wall, 17, of the range to the upper edge ofthe water-front as shown in Fig. 5, said plate being for convenience of manufacture made separate from the front end wall, 17, but being in effect a continuation thereof.
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with the body of a stove having a lire-box and asmoke-flue; of a water-front the inner side wall. of which forms the front wall of the fire-box; a .gasburner having jet-openings directed toward said water-front, and an outlet flue extending from the space in front of and above said wate -frontto said smoke-flue and closed to the fire-box.
2. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box'and a smoke-flue; of a water-front the inner side wall .of which forms the 'front'wall of the fire-box; a gasburner having jet-openings directed toward said water-front, an outlet flue extending from the space in front of and above said water-front to said smoke-flue and closed to the fire-box; and a damper for said outletfine.
3. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box and a smoke-flue; of a water-front the innel'side wall of which forms the front wall of the fire-box; a gasburner having jet-openings directed toward said water-front, an outlet flue extending from the space in front of and above said water-front to said smoke-flue and closed to the fire-box; a valve controlling the gassupply to said burner; and connections between said valve and said damper whereby said gas-supply valve and said damper are opened in unison and closed in unison.
4:. The combination with the body of a stove having a lire-box and a smoke-flue; of a water-frontthe inner side wall of which forms the outer side wall of the fire-box, said water-front being provided with ver tical flues. therethrough; a gas-burner provided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of said water-front, and other jetopenings directed toward the outer side wall of said water-front; and an outlet flue leading from the space on the outer side of, and above, said water-front to said smoke-flue, and closed to said fire-box.
5. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box and a smoke-flue; of a water-front the inner side wall of which forms the outer side wall of the fire-box, said water-front being; provided with vertical fines therethrough; a gas-burner provided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of said water-front, and other jetopenings directed toward the outer side wall of said water-front; an outlet flue leading from the space on the outer side of, and above, said water-front to said smoke-flue, and closed to said fire-box; and a damper controlling said outlet-flue.
6. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box and a smoke-flue; of a wa.tertrout the inner side wall of which forms the outer side wall of the fire-box, said water-front being provided with ver tical lines therethrough: a gasburner provided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of said water-trout, and other jet-openings directed toward the outer side wall of said water-front; an outlet-flue leading from the space on the outer side of, and above, said water-front to said smoke-flue, and closed to said fire-box; a damper controlling said outlet-flue; a valve controlling the gas-supply to said burner; and connections between said valve and said damper, whereby said gas-supply valve and said damper are opened in unison and closed in unison.
7. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box and a smoke-flue; of a water-front the inner side wall of which forms the outer wall of the firebox, said water-front being provided with vertical fines; a gasburner com prising a hollow casting' L-shaped in cross-section, the horizontal portion of the burner being provided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of the water-front, and its vertical portion be ing provided with jetppenings directed toward the outer side wall of the water-front; and an outlet-flue leading from the space at the outer side of, and above, the Waterfront.
8. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box and a smoke-flue; of a water-front the inner side wall of which -lorms the outer wall of the fire-box, said water-front being" provided with vertical lines; a gasburner comprising a hollow casting L-shaped in cross-section, the horizontal portion of the burner being provided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of the water-front, and its vertical portion being provided with jet-openings directed toward the outer side wall of the water-front; and an outlet-flue leading from the space at the outer side of, and above, the waterfront to said smoke-flue, and closed to the fire-box.
9. The combination with the body of a stove having a fire-box and a smoke-tlue; of a waterfront the inner side wall of which forms the outer wall of the fire-box, said water-front being provided with vertical lines; a gas-burner comprising a hollow casting L-shaped in cross-section, the horizontal portion of the burner beingprovided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of the water-front, and its vertical portion being provided with jet-openings directed toward the outer side wall of the water-front; an outlet-flue leading from the space at the outer side of, and above, the water-front to said smoke-flue, and closed to the fire-box; a damper for controlling said outlet-flue; a valve for controlling the gas-supply to said burner; and connections between saidvalve and said. damper whereby they are opened in unison and closed in unison.
10. The combination with the body of a stove having a tire-box and a SHIOkOflHG; oi? a water-front the inner side wall of which forms the outer wall of the fire-box, said water-front being provided with vertical fines; and a gas-burner comprising a hollow casting L-shaped in cross-section, the horizontal portion of the burner being pro vided with jet-openings directed toward the bottom of the water-front and its vertical portion being; provided with jet-openings directed toward the outer side wall of the water-front; and with transverse vent-openm s.

The combination with the body of a stove having a front end wall, a fire-box and a smoke-flue; ofzt watevfront the inner side wall of which forms the outer Wall of" the fire-box, said Waterfront being provided with vertical flues; a gas-burner provided with jet-openings directed toward the outer side Wall of the water-front and with other jet-openings directed toward the bottom of the Water-front; a bafliepiate i extending W across the space from the upper outeredge of the Water-front to the frontend wallet the stove; and an outlet-flue leading from the space above the Water-front, and "from the space beneath said bathe-plate to the smoke-flue.
