C. WIN KELMANN HAT LINING Filed March 24, 1921 INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESSES:
Patented New. 2?, i923.
CHARLES WINKELMANN, O13 NQETH BERGEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNQR TO THE SING- ER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF ELIZABETH, NEVJ JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY. I
HAT LINING.
Application filed March 24, 1921. Serial I-To. 455,133.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES VVINKEL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Bergen, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Linings, of which the following is a specification, referenceloeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hat-linings and has for an object to provide a hat-lining which may be manufactured at low cost with a minimum of manufacturing operations and which is neat and attractive in appearance.
To thi end the usual oval top member has attached thereto, preferably in one sewing operation, lining and insert or casing strips formed preferably from a single strip of material having an 8-fold along one edge affordin the insert strip or casing within which is housed a draw-cord. The lining strip and at least one ply of the casing strip are stitched to the upper face of the top member, with at least one wall of the casing intermediate the lining and the topmember, whereby the draw-cord within the casing may be tightened to bend the casing inwardly around the edge of the top member to position within the hat lining concealing the edge of the top member and the stitching.
The present hat-lining, in its preferred form, may be manufactured in one operation on a sewing machine equipped for example with a strip-folder such as disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 455,132, filed herewith, Patent No. 1,44%,894,
dated Feb. 13, 1923.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hat-lining embodying the invention. Fig. 2 1s a sectional View of the seam which unites the top-member and side strip as it issues from the-sewing machine and Fig. 3 is a similar View after the draw-cord has been tightened.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, as illustrated, the side strip 3 is formed at one edge with an 3-fold including an intermediate ply 1 and an upper ply 2 constituting an insert strip or casing S w1thin which is positioned the draw-cord 4.. The strip 8 sofolded, is presented in lapped relation with the edge of the usual oval to-p member 5 to a sewing machine which forms the line of stitches 6 securing the folded strip 8 to t e top-member o and closing the open side or". the casing 3.
After the sewing operation is completed, the draw-cord is tightened and acts to bend the casing 3 around the edge 7 of the topmember 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, to a position within the hat-lining concealing the stitching 6 and neatly finishing off the lining. The top-member 5, may of course, be made up of any number of plies of material presenting a surface of attractive appearance within the hat-lining.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is l. A hat lining comprising a top-member, a side strip having its upper marginal portion overlapping the upper face of the topmember, a line of stitches passing through the overlapped portions of the top-member and side-strip, a relatively narrow folded strip having its proximate edges secured by said line of stitches to form a casing at least one ply of which overlaps the upper face of the top-member, and a draw-cord disposed within said casing and serving to hold the latter bent downwardly and inwardly around the edge of the top-member to a position concealing the line of stitches.
2. A hat-lining comprising a top-member, a side strip formed at its upper edge with an 3-fold stitched to the edge of the topmemloer thereby forming a casing adapted to be bent downwardly and inwardly to a position within the hat-lining concealing the stitching, and a draw-cord within said casing for holding the latter in stitch-concealing position.
3. A. hat-lining comprising a top-member, a side strip formed at its upper edge with an 8-fold stitched to the edge of said top-member, thereby forming a casing adapted to be bent around said edge, and a draw-cord within said casing for holding the latter bent around the edge of the top-member and member, thereby forming a casing adjacent in a position within the hat-lining concealsaid edge, and a draw-cord within said cas- 10 ing the stitching. ing for holding the latter bent around the 4. A hat-lining comprising a top-member, edge of the top-member to a position within 5 a side strip formed at its upper edge with the hat-lining concealing the stitching. I
an S-f0ld superposed upon and stitched to In testimony whereof, I have igned my the edge of said top-member with all plies name to this specification of the S-fold at the upper side of the top CHARLES \VINKELMANN.
