Description
L. W. BEECHER.
`Paper-Buxes.
PaxenredFeb-17l1s74.
No.l47,547.
mln/eas e5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. YVHEELER BEECHER, OF VESTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,547, dated February 17, 1874; application tiled October 4, 1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, L. WHEELER BEEcHER, of Westville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Paper Box 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is an improved paper' box, made from a continuous strip of heavy bodypaper covered entirely upon one side with a lighter paper of better quality, which is folded over the edges ofthe .body-paper to form a narrow-edge strip upon the other side; and its novelty consists mainly in so constructing the ends of the box that when the latter is conipleted, the internal-edge strip of the coveringpaper will be fully exposed to view, so that the box is uniform in appearance at sides and ends, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a plan view of thc strip of body-paper, with the covering-paper folded over its edges; Fig. 2, a view of one end ofthe blank as folded to form a box; and Figs. 3 and 4, views ot' the completed box.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully the manner of construct-ing the same.
A represents a continuous strip ot' body-paper, preferably of some common heavy kind, which is of suitable width and thickness.. a represents the covering-paper, preferably of better quality, which is pasted upon one side, so as entirely to cover the same, and is also folded over its edges in such manner as to form a narrow-edge strip upon the other side, as shown. The strip, when thus prepared, is eut by suitable mechanism upon the full lines mw, and scored for bending upon the broken lines x. By this means the side flaps e c and the end aps d d are formed, the extended portions c' c of the side flaps also forming a portion of the ends when the box is made. The end flaps d d are not eut of the same width as the side flaps, but are made at least as much narrower as the width of the edge-strip of the covering-paper, so that, when the box is completed, the edge-strip will be fully exposed above the end flaps d, and the box be uniform in appearance at the sides and ends, as shown.
By means of the described construction, a box of finished and uniform appearance may be made of cheap material.
It will be understood that the covering-paperis attached to the body-paper in long strips before the box-blank is made, so that the expense is thus materially reduced.
The gist of the invention consists in producing a box identical in appearance with the old box, but at much less expense, because, on account of its construction, the covering-paper can be attached before the blank is formed.
, Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A box -formcd from a continuous strip of body-paper covered so as to have an overlapped ornamental border, which is exposed equally all around the inside by means of the shortened ends d, as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 30th day ot' September, 1873.
