Description
S. STERN. Lamp-Extinguishers.
No.147,44,3, Paten tedFeb.l0.1874.
WITNESSEK UNITED STATE$ PATENT ()I'FIoE.
SIGMUND s'rnnn, on GREENVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14?,443, dated February 10, 1874; application filed January 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SIGMUND STERN, of
Greenville, in the county of Bond and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for facilitating the extinguishing of the flame of hydrocarbon and other lamps, which are suspended at a considerable-height from the ground, without necessitating either the removal or lowering of the lamps, or the use of steps or other means to enable a person to reach the same.
In the accompanying drawing,Arepresents a tube, which may be constructed of metal or other suitable material, and which is provided at one end with a mouth-piece, B, while at the opposite end it is fitted to receive a ring or collar, 0, which supports, by means of a bent arm, D, a deflector or plate, E, in such relation to the end A of the tube A that a current of air passing up the tube A shall be deflected by the plate E, as hereinafter described. The plate E is adjustable on the part 1), and is connected thereto by loops or guides E, or other equivalent means. The tube A is bent into the shape shown, in order that when the mouth-piece B is in position to be blown through, as hereinafter described, the deflector E may be brought into the desired position in regard to the chimney or glass of the lamp, the flame of which is required to be extinguished, without interfering with an exterior globe, shade, or other device attached to such amp. F is a supporting-handle.
In use it is simply necessary to grasp my extinguisher by the handle I and hold the same in avertical or slightly-inclined position, as shown by the drawing, with the deflector E a short distance, say, one-quarter of an inch, above the top of the chimney of the lamp, and then blowing through the tube A, by placing the mouth-piece B to the lips, a current of air will be conducted through the tube A, which will impinge upon the deflector E, and be deflected by it down the chimney onto the flame, and extinguish the same.
By this means it will be readily seen that not only can the flame of lamps be readily eX- tinguished at a considerable height from the ground without difficulty, but also all danger is avoided of breaking the chimneys of such lamps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a lamp extinguisher, a flat disk or plate, E, supported above the end A of a tube, A, in position to cause a current of air which has left the end A of the tube A, and is passing upward, to be deflected down the chimney or glass of a lamp, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a tube, A, of a ring or collar, 0, bent arm D, deflector or plate E, having loops or guides E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of January, 1874.
SIGMUND srnnn.
Witnesses: I I
