To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, FRANK L. EnnnLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVhitesboro, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button tringers, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying Cilzt'v 111,22

My invention relates to a button stringer, and I declare the following to be a full, clear, con'iplete, concise and exact description thereof sutlicient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout.

The object of the invention is to arovide a device for drawing a piece of tape through the holes of a button, whereby said button can be fastened by means of said tape to a garment.

The object will appear by referring to the drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device;

Fig. 2 is a central section taken on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1;

F ig. 3 is an enlarged detail view in perspective, showing the position of the button and of the tape just before the tape is passed through the holes of the button;

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view in perspective, showing the position of the button and of the tape just as the tape is pulled through the holes of the button.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a base -1- on which is formed or secured in any suitable manner a bearing block 2 having journals at 3, 3 for mounting a shaft l. The shaft 4 sup ports alever arm 5 that rocks thereon. One end of the lever arm 5 is bifurcated at 6 to form a recess, whereby the bifurcated ends will be adapted to straddle the upstanding inverted hooks 8, 3. The other end of the lever arm 5 has a hole at 9 to adapt it to be secured to a chain 11 that is secured also to a treadle 12. The treadle 12 is held normally in the full line position represented in Fig. 1 by a coiled spring 13 wound about the shaft 14: on which said treadle 12 rocks.

The shank 15 of each of the hooks 8 is disposed in a recess made in the post or cylindrical shaped block 16 that is fastened to the base -1 in any suitable manner. The

said shanks 15 of hooks 8 are held in said recesses, in each instance, by a set screw 20.

The lever arm 5 is held normally in such position that the bifurcated end 6 will rest upon the upper surface of the post 16 by a spring 21 that is coiled about a shaft 22. One end of the spring 21 rests against the under surface of the lever arm 5 and the other end rests against the upper surface of the base -1-. The shaft 22 has bearings in the journal members 3, 3 of the block 2.

The lever arm 5 is limited in its rocking motion against the tension of spring 21 by an upstandin adjustable pin 25 that is mounted in a threaded orifice formed in base land held in given position therein by lock nut 26.

Tn order to string a tape 30 through the holes 31, 31 of a button 32, the said button 32 is placed manually directly above and with the holes 31 in alinement with the hooks 3, 8 and then allowed to drop down with the hooks 8 projecting through said holes 31, as seen in Fig. 3. The tape 30 is placed through the hooks 8 by engaging the same from the open ends beneath. The treadle 12 is actuated to rock the lever arm 5 upon its fulcrum against the tension of its spring 13 to, thereby, elevate the bifurcated end 2 and the button 32 disposed thereon, which will pass upwards along the shanks 15 of the hooks 8. The hooks 8 will pass through the holes 31 of the button 32 and will draw the tape 30 thereafter, as seen in Fig. 4:.

For convenience, the buttons 32 are contained in a box 35, the tapes 30 in a box 36 and the buttons 32 after the tape has been in serted in the holes thereof are dropped in a boX 37 formed in the base 1.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a button stringer, hooks adapted to hold a tape, a lever adapted to rock adjacent said hooks, and means for causing said lever to elevate a button, whereby said hooks will draw said tape therethrough.

2. In a button stringer, stationary means for holding a tape, and a lever for forcing a button upward, whereby to string said tape through a button, and spring means for returning said lever to normal position.

3.
