JOHN yINTEN, OF DETROIT, MICHGAN.
3303i LATCH.
Application filed April 24, i922. Serial No. 556,336.
To all whom it mag/ cof/z cem.'
Be it known that I, JOHN FEITEN, a citi- Zen or" the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of layne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to box latches and more particularly to a latch for a box or cabinet intended for display uses.
It is the object of the invention to provide a latch for a box or cabinet, which latch will have provision for positively holdino' the same in operative position during shipment of the box.
A further object is to provide a latch for a box or cabinet that will ac-t as a reinforcement for the corner of the box which it engages.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the closed position of the latch;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the latch released and the closure controlled by the latch partly opened;
Figure 3 is an end view of a display cabinet to which the latch is particularly applicable.
In these views the reference character A designates the body of a box or cabinet, and B a closure for said cabinet forming the front thereof and hinged at its top thereto, as indicated at B. The improved latch comprises a member C rigidly carried by the body of a box, and a pivotal member D detachably engageable withthe part C and mounted adjacent the free edge of the closure B. The member C has the nature of a sheet metal plate. which is nailed or otherwise secured to an end face of the box A, and has marginal portions C and C2, bent to respectively overlap the front and bottom of the box and nailed thereto. Thus said plate strongly reinforces the corner portion of the box to which it is secured. The member D is likewise formed of sheet metal and has its upper end pivoted upon the closure B by means of a hinge or rivet E. E is a return-bent tongue laterally projecting from the lower end portion of the member D, said tongue E being rear- `wardly bent so as to overlap the forward edge portion of the plate C. In one pivotal position of the member D, the free end portion E2 of the tongue E is adapted to snugly engage within an upwardly elongated slot F formed in the front marginal portion of the plate C. 'lhus when the latch member D occupies the described position, the closure B is secured in its closed position. lt is important during shipment of the box or cabinet A, to maintain the closure thereof positively closed as the contents of the box or cabinet are then properly protected` and the closure may not be easily broken. To insure against opening of the closure through accidental shifting of the latch member D, provision is made for locking said latch member in its latched position. Thus in the free end portion of said member there is formed a slot Gr extending in a substantially circumferential relation to the pivot E. Adjacent one end portion of said slot, the member D is indented, asindicated at G and in the latched position of said member, the head of a screw H passing through said slotinto the closure B engages within the depression G locking the member D against pivotal movement. Obviously this locking means is of a very positive nature, since a screw driver must be used and the screw H must be turned out suficiently to displace the head of the screw from the depression G before unlatching of the closure may be effected. lt will be evident that subsequent to a sufficient outward adjustment of the screw H, the member D may be swung upon the pivot E, as shown in Figure 2, so as to withdraw the tongue E? from the slot F, thus leaving the closure free to be opened.
That l claim as my invention is l. The combination with a receptacle, having a closure, of a latch for said closure comprising a member adjustable upon the closure, and a co-acting member secured to one face of the receptacle, and having a portion overlapping and secured to another face thereof.
2. rl`he combination with a receptacle, having a closure, of a latch comprising a pair of co-acting sheet metal members, one of which is pivoted on said closure, and the other rigidly secured to the body of the receptacle reinforcing a joint between transverse faces thereof.
8. The combination with a receptacle, having a closure, of a latch comprising a pair of co-acting members, one of which is rigidly secured to the body of the receptacle,
and the other adjustable upon the closure thereon, and a screw the head of which engages the latter member in its closed position to look the same.
4. The Combination With a receptacle, having a closure7 ot a latch comprising a pair of sheet metal members, one of which is secured to a t'aee ont Vsaid receptacle transverse to said closuree and is formed with a slot7 the other latch member being' pivoted upon the front of said elosure and having a laterally projecting tongue rear* Wardly return-bent to engage the said slot.
5. The Combination with a reeeQtaele, having a closure7 ot a latch comprising a pair of co-aeting members, respectively mounted upon the body ot the receptacle,
and upon said closure, rthe latter being piveted and 'formed With a Slot and with an indentation marginal to said slot, and a screw entering the closure through said slot hau/'ing its head adjustable into or out ot said indentation through turning ot said screw to lock or unlock the latch member.
G. The Combination with a receptacle having a closure, oli a latch eomprisin@` an element rigidly secured to the body of said receptacle and. reinforcing Vthe corners thereof5 and an adjustable 'element upon the closure and engageable with the element aforesaid to secure said Closure in Closedv position.
In testimony whereof l attix my signature.
