Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l, dated February l0, 1874; application led June 5, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Bc it known that I, PIERRE BERAED, of the town of Vebster, in the county of for1- ccster, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vashing-Machines, and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in washinganachines; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts which will be more fully described hereafter.

Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; and Fig.` 3 is a side elevation.

A represents a suitable box or frame upon which the tub is rocked back and forth, and which is provided with a'drawer to receive the clothes, after they have been passed through the tub. The tub B is semicircularin shape, and is attached to the frame A by suitable straps, H, so that the box can be freely rocked back and forth by any power applied to the handle F on the cover D. The ends of this tub are corrugated, while around the inner surface of the sides a-nd bottom, are arranged a number of slats or bars, c, against whieh the clothes are rubbed as the tub is rocked back and forth. In the top of the tub is suspended a frame, a', around the sides of which are pivoted a number of rollers, g, which serve to hold the clothes down in position upon the tops ot the bars c. Upon each side of the franie A is pivoted a movable arm, C, to which the wri nger is attached, and which is held in position by the hooked rods G. Then the wrin ger is no longer needed it can be inoved back out of the way, without the trouble of unfastening any part. 0n one side of the tub Bl is a hinged arm, J, so arranged that when the wrin ger is used, the arm Vis turned down in a slot in the frame A, and secured by a button, K, which holds the tub firmly in place, and when the washer is used the hinged arm is turned up on the tub and there secured by a button, I, leaving the tub free to be rocked for washing purposes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-,-

1. The seinicircular tub B, fra-ine a, provid ed with rollers g and straps H, in combination with the box A, substantially as set forth.

2. The hinged arm J, and buttons I and K, in combination with the tub B and frame A, substantially as and forthe purpose specilied.
