Description

Nov. 6, 1923. A nmzm R. BLADES MEAT HANGER AND APPARATUS FOR APPLYING THE SAME Filed Oct. 9 1922 Patented New. 6, 1823.
ROBERT BLADES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MEAT HANGER AND APPARATUS FOR APPLYING THE SAME.
Application filed October 9, 1922. Serial No. 593,482.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ROBERT BLADES a citizen of the United States, and a resi ent of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Meat Hanger and Apparatus for Applying the Same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a meat hanger and apparatus for'applyingthe same, and particularly to an improved means for engaging a flexible member through a piece of meat or similar material so that the same may be conveniently suspended by said member for curing, smoking, storage and the like.
Heretofore it has been the general custom to thread ordinary twine through the portion of the meat to be suspended, after which the twine was knotted to complete the hanger. g V
This operation has proven objectionable in that it is time-taking and expensive and in that deterioration of the twine caused'an unsanitary condition, and an important object of the present invention consists in the provision of an improved meat hanger which is sanitary, inexpensive and which may be quickly and conveniently engaged through the piece of meat to be suspended and which is firmly retained in position when engaged therethrough.
It is a further important object of this invention to provide a device of the class described having coacting applying means for facilitating the permanent engagement of the hanger with the material or article to be suspended.
Other and further important objects of the present invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the applying tool for the hanger of this invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation illustrating the method of applying the hanger with the applying tool.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary bottom plan view of the applying tool.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 with parts in elevation. Figure 5 is a plan view of a hanger embodying the principles of this invention.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a section on the line 77 of Figure 4.
Figure 8 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of hanger.
As shown on the drawings:
A preferred form of hanger embodying the principles of this invention is shown in Figure 5 wherein the reference numeral 1 indicates a flexible connecting member which is preferably formed of wire of non-corrosive material or a material provided with a non-corrosive coating, and which has secured to either end a flat metallic plate 2 which is also constructed of non-corrosive material or provided with a non-corrosive coating. 7
Formed at either end of said flat metallic plates 2 on the inner face thereof are integral bosses or extensions 3, while similar extensions or bosses 4 are formed on the same sides of said plates at the points where the flexible member 1 is connected thereto.
In the modified form of hanger which is illustrated in Figure 8, one of the plates 2 is supplanted by a loop 5 which may be formed in the flexible member 1 in any wellknown manner. e v
Embodied in the present invention is a piercing or applying tool which is used in connection with my improved hanger for inserting the hanger through a ham, a slice of bacon or any other mass of organic material which is to be suspended by the hanger. Said piercing tool is provided with a handle 6 which has secured thereon an axial metallic shank 7 and on the outer end of said metallic shank 7 is an enlarged portion 8 which is provided on its lower side with a groove or recess 9, as. clearly indicated in Figures 3 and 4. The outer end of said groove or recess 9 terminates in a slot in which is mounted a pointed blade portion 10 which is secured in said slot by means of rivets 11 and the sharpened portion of which extends rearwardly to points 12 both at the top and bottom of the blade. A rearward extension 13 is formed on the lower part of the blade portion extending along thebo'ttom of the groove to a cutout portion 14 which is formed in the inem-' her 8 intermediate the ends thereof.
As clearly shown in Figure 4:, a depression 15 is formed in the inner face of said extension 13 ana said depression 15 is adapted to receive a boss 3 on one end of the plate 2 when the same is inserted in the groove Q, said pl'ate Zjbeing releasably held in said groove iii, theposition'shown 'in Figure 4 means ofa fialtlleaf spring 16, which" is secured at one insaidgroove, in dicated in Figured, by means of a rivet 17 In order to iacili'tat'e the removal of pieces To f materialjfromfthe groove 9, an
aperture 18is providedin the outer end of the member 8 extending transversely of saidgrooyeand permitting the ready insertion of a tool theretli r ough to push out Wastematerial." V In applying the improyed hanger-of this invention the plate-2 0 1 one en'd'of the fie'x- .ibleiiien 'be'i 1 isi seci red, in position in the slot Sii'nthe portio'iib 25f the piercing tool, in the manner indicated in Figures 2 and t ,the,spr1 g serfying to hold said plate inYproperpesition iii said slot 9; "The tool is then.'engagedthrough' the article to be suspended for 'examp'le a ham" 19, and
astheitoolfisfoi cedf through the article the flexible member "1 isofcourse'alsd drawn therethrougli until i the ate 2 of the loop 5 on the other end of. said member contacts the rear sidejo f 'tih e liani or other article in'the 'man 'ier indicated in dotted lines in Figure atjwhichf time [the tension on the flexible meinb l ispslilfiient to pull the :EQrWardpla-teQ romtheslot' 9. The pierc s wolimi hen' e th mwn ea the hanger position forfu'se, whereupon either plate 2 maybe used for; engagement w th a hooker other siiitfable hangingineans, or,-
if desired, in the foriii of hanger llO iNn in Figure 8 the plateEZ maybe drawn through the loop 5 'pri r the' time' thej same is hung,
It Will; be apparent that. this invention I providesjnot onlyaninexpensive, sand sani taryhaiiger but also proyidesfl'an apparatus and method o'ffq'uiclilyand conveniently,
applying the lsa gie, wherein the 1 necessity of kfnottingis' eliminated. jl 'amfaware that various details of construction and methods of application may be considerably changed Without departing from the 'spirit of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the. patent granted hereonotherwis'e than'necessitated by the prior arti '1 I claim' as my invention: i
