UNITED STATES lavata 'WILLIAM I-I. "WINCIILER, 0F ST. JOSEIH, MISSOURI.
PIN EXTRACTING .AND REPLACING TOOL.
Application filed November 3 4-, 1922.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Tirion- Lnn, a citizen of the United States, residing` at St. Joseph, in the county ot Buchanan and State oic Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Pin Extracting and Replacing Tools, of which the 'following is a specication.
T he present invention relates to tools 'tor extracting` pins, suoli as those usually e1nployed in valve stems for retaining, the usual spring seat upon the stem, and has for the primary object thereoi", the provision of such a device that is highly efficient ot purpose, comparatively simple ot construction, and inexpensive of manufacture.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement ot parts herein at'ter more fully described, :illustrated in the acromipanyingdrawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
.l'n the drawings 'forming a part ot this application, and in which like designatingV characters reifer to corresponding parts, through the several views:
.Figure l. is a plan view ot the tool constructed in accordance with. the present invention.
Figure 52 is a longitudinal sectional view upon the line --2 ot Figure 1.
Figure P is a perspective view oi" the operating rod fior controlling the movement ot the `grasping.;r iiugers ot the tool.
Figure 4- is a view similar to llipure l, but showing the pin engaging: lingers tightly surimindiiur one end ot a i. in. and
Figure a cross sectional view ou the line 55 of Figure jl..
Referrinn particularly to the drawings, my device comprises a relatively elongated tubular member l, split at a point inwardly of the outer end thereof as at 2. This split end of the tube provides relatively flat spring jaw members 3, which jaw members Serial No. 600,970.
are normally swung outward in a position as shown in Figure l. The outer end of each or' the jaw members are so formed as to provide concavo-convex finger ends 4, the concaved surface oi which are roughened at as shown in Figure 2.
Upon the opposite end of the tube l, there is positioned an open handle 6, which has upon the t'ront wall thereoi, a sleeve adapted to engage over the end ot' the tube l to be there secured by rivets or the like 8. illidably arranged within the tube l, is an ann'ular or other suitably shaped rod 9, the i'orward end of which extends between the springarms 3, and rigidly carries thereon an oblong' plate l0. As in Figures S and 5, this plate has adjacent its opposite ends, vertical slots l1 for allowingl the arms 3 to entherethrough whereby any movement of the rod f) within the tube will occasion a movement oi? the arms 3 toward or away it'ronx each other iior similarly moving the pin grasping fingers il.
Upon the upper side o'l thc tube l., and slightly forwardly of the sleeve 7 of the handle members 6, the said tube is slotted at l2 for receivingr therethrough the shank '1,3
oli an operating plate leiA upon or otherwise secured adjacent the inner end oi the rod l), lor permitting; oi movement oi the rod within the tube l by the operator.
From the above description, it will be readily apparent that whenever it is desirable to remove the pin such as A. in 'Figure Il, i'roui the stem of a valve, the tool with the arms 1% open as in Figure l is brought into meut with the pin ,A and the operator i the rod Qwithin the tube through the instrumentality oi the operati plaie 14;. slides the slotted plate 'l0 forwardly upon the arms 3 tor consequently rigidly enclosu jj the curved fingers 'l upon the pin., whereby the same may be advantageously removed 'from the valve stem. l
llVhile it is believed that from the toregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily ap-` parent, I desire to have it understood thatl I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such Changes Ina-y be resorted to when desired as fall Within 5 the scope of What is claimed;
niet I claim as new is A device of the character' described comprising a tube bifuroetedatl oneend provided with a pair of grasping jaws and `further 10 provided with a slot at its upper end, a
rod siiduble .in the tube, :in 'elruignieil pluie carried by one end of the rod und shdubly engaging the Jaws, a laterally extending pin carried at one end of the rod :rnd passing through the slot, and zr grasplng element Lcarried by the pin.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature. a'
IVILLIAM H. WINCHLER.
