Description

W. P. MURPHY Oct. 30 1923,
CAR ROOF Original Filed Jan. 10, 1921 N W W 7 a \Q Patented Oct. 30, 1923.
UNITED STATES imes PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER 1 MURPHY, OE NEVT YORK, N. 53"., ASSIGNOR T P. H. MURII-IY COMPANY, OF NEW KENSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
GAR ROOF.
Original application filed January 10, 1921, fierial No. 135,170. Divided and this application filed February 13, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, lVALrER P. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and dtat of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car Roofs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates principally to eaves constructions for heavy gage steel car roofs and is a division of my pending application for patent for improvement in car roofs, Serial No. 36,170, filed J an. 10, 1921.
The principal objects of the present invention are to obtain a waterproof eaves construction, to protect the bolts that secure the roof to the substructure of the car, to stiffen the eaves ends of the roof, to locate the securing rivets for the eaves ends of the sheet outside of the car and to enable the roof to be applied to the car as a unitary structure. Other objects are simplicity, strength, durability, and tightness.
The invention consists principally in the means hereinafter set forth for securing heavy gage steel roofs to cars having wood construction; and it also consists in the parts and arrangements hereinafter described. and claimed.
The accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification is a vertical crosssection through the eaves portion of a car roof embodying my invention.
The present roof comprises rigid load sustaming roof sheets of heavy gage steel, arranged cross-wise of the car and preferably extending from eaves to eaves there of, The side margins of adjacent sheets are turned up at right angles forming side flanges 4, which extend from end to end of the roof sheets and merge into the plane of the body of the sheets at said ends. Pressed sheet metal seam covers of inverted U- shape in cross-section embrace the side flanges 4L of adjacent sheets, and said seam covers and said flanges are fastened together by horizontal rivets 5*. The seam covers 5 are provided with lateral base flanges 6 and have downwardly curved eaves end portions that merge into the plane of said base flanges at the eaves ends of said seam covers. The eaves ends of the roof sheets 3 overhang the side plates '7 of the car and are turned down, as at 8; and the eaves ends of the seam covers are turned down, as at 9,
Serial ITO. 618,784.
over the depending eaves flanges 8 ofsaid roof sheets. The upper edge of the side sheathing boards 10 terminate below the top of the side plate and are nailed or otherwise secured to the outer face thereof.
The overhanging eaves ends of the roof sheets 3 have one flange of an eaves angle strip 11 rigidly secured. thereto by means of rivets 12, The eaves angle strip 11 extends lengthwise of the car and is disposed with its lateral flange uppermost and flush with the upper surface of the side plate and extending outwardly therefrom; and the other or vertical flange of said eaves angle strip is suitably secured to the outer side of the side plate by means of horizontal bolts The lower marginal portion of the eaves angle 11 is bent outwardly over the upper end of the side sheathing 10 and thence downwardly over the outer surface thereof, thereby forming an outwardly offset flange 14 which prevents water and snow from reaching the interior of the car between the side plate and the sheet.
In the construction illustrated the eaves angle strip acts as means for weatherproofing the joint between the side plate and the side sheathing.
Another important advantage of the hereinbefore described construction is that the roof sheets can be assembled and riveted to the connecting angle off the car before the same are applied thereto; that is, the whole roof may be assembled off the car and an plied to the car as a unitary construction. When it is desired to remove a damaged sheet, the rivets securing said sheets to said angles can be sheared, as the eaves construction allows ample room for cutting and redriving these rivets. if desired, the nuts can be placed on the outside of the caves of the side plate thereby permitting the removal of the eaves angle from the outside of the car, although, in actual practice, it is preferable to have the nuts on the inside for the sake of inspection and to enable the nuts to be tightened without removing the fascia.
What I claim is:
1. An eaves construction for car roofs comprising a side plate, metallic roofing extending outwardly beyond the outer face of said side plate, side sheathing secured to the outer face of said side plate with its upper edge terminating below the upper surface thereof, and an eaves stilfener comprising an angle bar having one flange secured to the outer face of said side plate above said side sheathing and having its other flange projecting therefrom and rigidly secured to the under side of said roofing, said first 111611- and rigidly secured'to the under side of said roofing, the eaves end of said roofing being turned down beyond the outer edgeof the outwardly projecting flange of said angle, and side sheathing secured to the outer face of said side plate with its upper edge terminating below the upper surface thereof, said first mentioned flange of said angle having an outwardly oil'set portion adapted to overlap the upper end portion of said side sheathing.
3. An eaves construction for car roofs comprising a side plate, metallicroofing extending outwardly beyond the outer face of said side plate, side sheathing secured to the outer face of said side Plate with its upper edge terminating below the upper surface thereof, and an eaves still'ener comprising an angle bar having one flange secured to said side plate above said side sheathing and having its other flange projecting therefrom and rigidly secured to the under side of said roofing, said first mentioned flange of said angle extending below the upper edge of said side sheathing so as to overlap the same.
4. An eaves construction for car roofs comprising a side plate, metallic roofing, and side sheathing terminating below the upper surface of said side plate, and an. cares sl-i i fener comprising a member having a lateral flange adapted to support the caves end of said metallic roofing and a vertical llang'e secured to said side plate and covering the upper end of said side sheathing.
5. An eaves construction for car roojl's comprising a side plate, metallic rooling, and side sheathing termiiurting below the upper surface of said side plate, and an eaves stiffener comprising a member securi-zd to said side plate and having a laterally extending portion adapted to support lhu eaves end of said metallic roofing and a depending portion covering the upper end ol? said side sheathing. I
Signed at Chicago, Ill., this th day of? January, 1923.
