Be it known that I, BEN Lirris, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Chandler, in the county of Fremont and State'of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drilling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rhis yinvention relates to drilling machines, more particularly to devices'of this 1G class employed in mining operations, and has for one of its objects to provide an apparatus of this character capable of being supported from the walls of a shaft, lateral heading, drift, or other portion of a mine tunnel, or
the like, and adjustable to direct the drill or other cutting implement in any direction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character capable of being manually operated, or adapted Without material structural change for operation by any external power, such as an internal combustion engine, electric motor, or the like.
Nith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention. v

The improved device comprises a portable outer oblong supporting frame formed with spaced side members 10- and 11, and end members 12 and 13, of any suitable material preferably of steel, of suiiicient strength to withstand the strains to which it will be subjected.
Extending from the members 10 and 11 near their ends are brackets 14 apertured to slidably receive pointed anchoring rods 15,

After the main or outer frame has been adjusted tothe required position, the members 15 will be adjusted to engage the supporting walls and thus hold the frame from rotation during the drilling action, as. hereafter explained.y

Mounted to swing-upon the shaft 2O betwen-the side members 10 and 11 is an inner frame or housing including' spaced side ' members 23 and 24 and spaced transversemembers 25 and 26, the shaft 2O passing 80 through the side members 23 and 24, as shown. I l Y Y Mounted to rotate upon the shaft 2O between the side members 23 and 24 are bevel gears 27 and 28, the ylatter having internally toothed clutch rims 29 and 30 with the teeth 31 andk 32 of the rims reversely directed, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Mounted for rotation with the shaft 2() and within the clutch rims, are disk members 33v and 34- carrying spring held pawls 35 and 86 to respectively engage the ratchet teeth 31 and 82. l Supported for rotation upon the transverse member 25 is a smaller gear 87, the latter having a polygonal shaped aperture to slidably receive a drill rod 38 to correspond to the conv tour of the aperture. of the gear, Vso that it will rotate with the gear while atA the same time v be movable longitudinally therethrough. j c,
{The transverse member 26 supports a stub shaft or stud 39 and mounted on the stud is a compound gear element 4formed with a bevel gear 40 in constant engagement with the bevel gears 27 and-28, and with a rim gear 4l in constant engagement with the v smaller Vgear 37.
By this arrangement it is immaterial in which direction the shaft 2O is rotated, the drill rod will be rotated in butV onel direction.`
Mounted for rotation through theY side members 23 and 24 of the inner frame is a shaft 42 carrying winding drums 43, and

, Coupled to--the frame members 23 and 24 and to the member 12 of the outer frame, are supporting chains 46, to hold the inner frame in adjusted position.

a' pair of Vdrive gears mounted on the shaft and meshing with said drivenelement, means for independently and detachably coupling the drive gears to said shaft, and a-winding shaft carried by the housing and having lieXible connection with said drillv for shift-V ing it longitudinally.
