Be it known that I, Josnrrr E. LARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Se attle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and use ful Derrick, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to derricks and the principal objects of the invention areto provide a derrick which is self contained in a simple and compact form; which may be manufactured at comparatively small cost; which may be readily installed and rigged for operation; which is direct and efficient in operation; which is substantial and durable in construction; and in which, by the utilization of a mast or other ready standing spar in cooperation with a boom concentrically mounted on a heavily constructed horizontally revolvable bull wheel, the usual guys, leg braces, struts and sills are eliminated.
With the above and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a derrick embodying the features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bull wheel with fragments of its associated parts; and
Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section taken substantially on a broken line 3, 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, the numeral 5 designates a turn table which is bolted to a flooring 6. Conceutri cally formed on the top of said table is a hollow cylindrical hub 7.
A bull wheel 8, having a central hub 9 formed thereon, is arranged. to fit snugly over the cylindrical hub 7. An annular rib 101 is formed on the under side of said bull wheel which is arranged to bear against a corresponding rib 11 formed on the upper side of the turn table 5 for reasons hereinafter described. per portions projecting inwardly and down wardly to engage the inner shoulder of a rim 13 formed on said bull wheel.
Gear teeth, formed on the periphery of the bull wheel. 8, are engaged by a pinion 14 secured to a vertical shaft 15 which is mounted in suitable brackets 16 secured to the table 5. An engine, as indicated at 17, is arranged to impart rotary motion to said vertical shaft through suitable gearing 18.
Two double lug brackets 19 are diametrically secured to the upper side of the bull wheel 8 substantially over the annular ribs 10 and 11 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The lower ends of sheer legs 20 of a boom 21 are pivotally secured to said lug brackets by bolts 22.
A roller 23 is mounted in bearings 24 se cured to the bull wheel 8 adjacent the hub 9 in such position as to provide. a fair lead vertically over the opening in the cylindrical hub 7 The upper end of the boom 21 is provided with a sheave 25 and a hoisting cable 26, on the free end of which is secured a grappling hook 27, is arranged to pass over said sheave and downwardly over fair leaders 28, thence over the roller 23, and through the opening in the hub 7 to the drum 29 of a hoisting engine 30 secured to the flooring 6.
A topping lift 31, having its outer portion threaded through a block 32 pivotally secured to the upper end of the boom 21, and its inner portion through a block 33 secured to cross trees 3% bolted to a mast 35, extends downwardly through a pulley 36 secured to said mast, and thence to a drum 37 of a hoisting engine 88. A. pipe 39 leading to a boiler (not shown) is arranged to supply steam through proper connections to the engines 17, 30 and 38.
In the construction of my invention it will be understood that the turn table 5 and bull wheel 8 are made of heavy and durable metal. The annular ribs 10 and 11 are arranged to bear vertically below the lug brackets 19 in order to equalize the thrust caused by the weight of the load on the boom 21. The bearing surfaces between the ribs 10 and 11 and between the clamp members 12 and rim 13 of said bull wheel are well lubricated to prevent friction and wear ing.
In the operation of my device the bull gag wheel 8 is caused to revolve through the pinion 14 and connecting parts by starting the engine l7. The boom 21 will thus be swungaround in alignment with the material to be lifted and the upper end of said boom is then lowered, or raised, through the topping lift 31 by operating the engine 38 until the grappling hook 27 is placed vertically above said material. It will now be obvious that the said grappling hook may be raised and lowered through the cable 26 by the engine 30 in repeatedlylifting the material and swinging it to the desired locality by operating the engine 17, gravity,
of course, furnishing the motive power in slacking said hoisting cable and topping lift.
It will be understood that electro motive power could be substituted for steam, and
that a platform could be constructed above I tive and that such changes may be resorted to as are within the scope and spirit of the invention.
What I claim is r A derrick of the character described comprising a base turn table, a hollow cylindrical hub concentrically formed on the upper side of said turn table, an annular rib on the upper side of said turn table, a bull wheel revolvably mounted on said cylindrical hub and turn table base, an annular rib on the under side of said bull wheel arranged to register with its said corresponding rib on said turn table base, gear teeth on said bull wheel, a pinion arranged to mesh with said gear teeth, means for imparting rotary motion to said bull wheel through saidpinion and gear teeth, clamp members secured to said turn table base and slidably engaging said bull wheel, a boom pivotally mounted on said bull wheel, a sheave on the upper end portion of said boom, a roller mounted on said bull wheel, a hoisting cable arranged to pass over said sheave and roller and through said hollow cylindrical hub, means for ontrolling the movement of said hoisting cable, a mast, a topping lift secured to the upper end portion of said boom and mast, and means for controlling the movement of said topping lift to impart pivotal movement to said boom.
