I I Be it known that we, RICHARD MARTIN, a subject of the King ofGreat Britain and Ireland, and residing at Exeter Villa, Uplands, Swansea, in thecounty of Glamorgan, Wales, and JOHN lsaAo-RroHAnosga subject of the'King ofGreat Britain and Ireland, and residing at Upper Clay Works, Ystalyfer'a, near Swanseafin the county of Glamorgan, Wales, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Use in the Treatment of Pulverulent or Granular Materials with Gases, of which the following is a specification; This] invention relates to apparatus for usein the treatment, of pulverulent or granular materials in a current of gas and is particularly concerned with theroasting ofores and the like. i
V The object of the invention, broadly stated, is to provide improved means for conveying the granular or pulverulent material treated through .a chamber as, for
instance, airoasting furnace, in which the 2 material is subjected to the action of a gas current and to expose fresh surfaces of the material therein to the action of the heated gases. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved furnace adapted for use in roasting ores and thelike of the kind comprising a plurality of hearths or floors arranged one above another and openings adjacent to alternate ends ofthese floors or hearths whereby the material treated may be transferred from one floor on to the floor or hearth situated next below, and means adapted to cause the ore to travel over these floors or hearths in succession;
According to the invention, a member provided with a scraper element and a plurality of plough elements is caused to travel over the floor or hearth on which the granular or pulverulent material isdeposited, 'alternately in a backward and forward direction and means isassociated with the said member whereby the motion of the said member causes the scraper-element or the plough elements as the case may be to. be brought into operation to convey the ma} terial over the fiQQlf'Qr hearth or to expose offthe current of gas.

When flexible memberssuch as chains or bands are employed for this-'purpose, they may be=passed over guide sprockets or pulleys arranged adjacent to the' front or rear wall of the" furnace and thence in an upward or downward direction over suitable sprockets or pulleys adapted' to impart to them the'rrequired motion.
This arrangement-{as will be recognized, results in economy of space ascompared with the arrangement in which: the combined scraper and plough elements are secure'dto bars which are adapted to cause these' elements to travelover the floors or hearths. 1 One construction in accordance with the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, inwhich Figure 1 is a section through a furnace provided with devices-in accordance with the invention,'and 1 Figure 2 is a corresponding plan view.

which the material is subjected to the action of a gas current, and for exposing fresh surfaces of the material therein to, the action of the heated gases, comprising a member provided with a scraper element and a plurality of plough elements, means whereby said member is caused to travel alternately in a backwardand forward direction through the chamber and means whereby motion in the one direction causes the scraper element to be brought into 'positionto operate on the material on the fiooriof said chamber and conveymaterial therethrough and motion in the other direction removes the scraper, element from the said position and brings the ploughelements into position to operate on the material on the floor of the chamber in,
order to expose fresh surfaces of the material to the action of the current of gas.
2. Improved means for conveying granular or pulverulent material through a chamber as, for instance, a roasting furnace, in which the material is. subjected to the action of a gas current, and for. exposing fresh surfaces of the material therein to the action of the heated gases, comprising a member provided with a scraper element and a plurality of plough elements, means whereby said member is caused to travel in a backward and forward direction through the chamber, a pivotalconnection between the member and said means and members adapted to bear upon the material on the floor of the chamher and by frictional contact therewithto rotate the member provided with a scraper element and plough elements to bring the scraper blade or ploughs into position to operate on the material.

plough elements, brackets securing said plough, elements to the member, means whereby said member is caused to travel'in' a backward and forward direction through the chamber, a pivotal connection between the member and sald means, and members c adapted to bear upon the material on'the fioorof the chamber and by frictional contact therewith to rotate the member provided with a scraper element and plough elements to bring the scraper blade orploughs into position to operateon the material.
