unten stares ROY BURCHETT, OF
VACUUM Application led .Tune 16, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY 'BURCHETL citizen of United States, residing at Seiling, in the county of Dewey and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vacuum Governors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference to governors erable to open or close the throttle-valve in accordance with the degree of suction or vacuum created within the manifold at any given time. j
A11 additional object is to provide governing means of the character referred to which embodies a. floating member adapted to be both spring actuated or vacuum controlled whereby it is rendered highly sensitive to any variation or change in the suction or vacuum of the manifold.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention may besaid generally to reside in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinaftel` more fully pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whereini Figure 1 is a view disclosing the manner of applying the invention to the manifold, the said invention being partly in section to show the movable piston; and Fig.` 2, a cross section of the manifold taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1 and disclosing the throttlevalve.
In the drawings, numeral 1 indicates the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine such as usually extends from the carburetor to the motor and which is provided with a throttle valve 2 as illustrated, which serves to control the amount of fuel passing through the manifold. In applying the invention, the same is connected to the manifold between the throttle valve and motor,
'and functions in the capacity of a governorl for regulating and directing the action of the throttle valve for maintaining uniform engine speed. The suction created in the manifold by the formation ofthe vacuum tenses aria asics.

varies in intensity as the speed of the engine increases or decreases, and as the governing means is communicated directly with the intakemanifold, Ait is sensitive to any varia- -tion in-pressure or suction occurring in the manifold and automatically operates to adjust the throttle valve accordingly. The invention includes a cylinder ,3 having one end connected tothe manifold by communication is a piston 8 having thepiston `rod `9 slidabl'e thru the cylinder head and' enclosed within uard casing 6.v Secured to the end of rod 9,
y means of adjusting nuts 10 and 11, is one terminal of a link 12 which has its other ter'- i 75 ver 13, the latter being pivoted to bracket minal fastened to one arm of bell crank le- 14 carried by the cylinder. The other end of lever 13 is connected, by link 15 to throttle valve 2 so that the latter will be operated to open or close as the pist-on moves to and fro in the cylinder. The piston is normally held at'the upper or casing end of the cylinder by means of a cone-shaped governor ,spring 16 seated in spring seat 17 of t-he cy'inder head and embracin piston rod9 between the head of the cyIinder and adjusting nuts 10 and 11; this spring being tensioned to resist, up to a lgiven limit, the pull or suction exerted on the piston from the intake manifold. Between the head and piston, rod 9 is encircled by a bumper spring 18 which serves as a cushion for the piston in case the motor backfiresv through the carburetor and manifold;
In operation, if spring 16is properly adjusted to. the normal speed of the motor, piston 8 will practically remain stationary in the cylinder when the engine is running idle. However, when the clutch is engaged and the speed of the engine thereby checked. there will be a corresponding decrease of vacuum in manifold 1 and cylinder 3, permitting spring 16 to raise piston 8 for opening the throttle and admitting mbre fuel to -the en 'ne. On the other hand, when the clutch 1s disengaged the engine speeds up instantly, increasing the vacuum in cylinder 3 so that piston 8 is drawn downwardly. compressing spring 16 and closing the throttle.
In this way the throttle is alternately opened #110 and closed to fregulatethef lanlouiit `offuel r. pipe 4 and its other end'is providedqvith ay ead or cap 5 carrying the casing16'. Cas"A ing 6 is provided with a door `Tas shown Mounted to'reciprocate within the cylinder -f vEso ioo j passing int-o'the engine Yfromv the intake manifold as variations in the engines speed. may occur, consequently enabling the engine to be operated at a uniform speed.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the ap roved or preferred form of my invention. desire it to be understood, however', that il may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the appended claim. v
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is T he combination With a fuel intake menifold having a throttle valve therein; of a Laarne@ vacuum casin having communication with the interior o the manifold, a piston therein adapted to be drawn toward one end of the casing b suction created in the manifold, a stem or the piston extending through one end of the casing, a coil spring associated With the stem on each side of the end of said casing, a bracket carried by the casing, a bell crank lever pivotally connected thereto, a rod connected to one arm of the bell crank at oneend having its opposite end angularly disposed to be connected to the pist ton stem, and a rod connecting the other arm of the bell crank to the throttle valve.
