ELMER E. oomwvELLl AND-JosEPH 'Hf MCCBEnY; or OKMULGE, o-xLaHoMA.
i-BUnNnR;
To @ZZ whom t m'ctji/I concern Y Be it known that we, ELMERVVE. ConwELL and JOSEPH H. `MOCREADY,'citizens of the YUnited States, andv residents of Olnnulgee, in
the county of Okmulgee and Stateof-Ok-lahoma, have invented certainy newand r useful Improvements in Burners, of whichrthe folf closed in Letters Patent Aof the v`United.
` 1921, andy it consistsin thecombinations,
lowing isl a specification. v c
Our invention relates to improvements in gas burners ofthetype of construction dis- States, No..1,382,894, issued tous June 28th,
construction and arrangements' herein describedand claimed.
Any object ofour invention-disto provide in a burneroffthe characterl described, `a novel tip orcombustionltube ,whichcanbe detachably secured to .a feed or. supply tube and which cantherefore be readilyreplaced when broken or removedand replaced for any other cause.
A furtherobject vof ourinventionis to ,providea burner tip which is vadapted .to
effect thorough and intimate commingling of a hydro-carbon fuel and air admitted' thereto'at one end andpassing therethrough tothe other end of thetip.
A still further object of our inventionis. to provide va tip which is stronggand durable jin construction, capable of withstanding an intense heat without impairment and which is thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the .following description,an d
i the novel featuresof the invention willbe application, in which- Figure'lY is azview vofa burner embodying particularly outlinedinthe appended claim.
Our invention. is illustrated in the kaccom- Y panying drawings, forming a of: this theinvention, i. Y Y
`fFigure 2 is a1 fragmentary viewy atl-ight angles toFigure 1 5, Ashowing one ofv our Vimproved tips appliedtoa feed'pipe,"
Figure 3 isla perspective view, showing `,the reverse `side' of the structure shown in Figure 2,
fFigure f1, kWe Showl ,y a tubular:
heador manifold 1 providedfwithffeedz Vbranches2 of tubular form, each of the feed `branches 2 beingrformed'vwith feed orifices 3 extending throughfthegwalls thereof.: VVVIn the form ofthe device illustrated:in the drawings, two adjacenty feed vorifices 3 througheach feed tube2 are adaptedV to discharge into the interior of one of a plurality oftips orcombustiorr tubes 4, as will presently appear.
.Each of the tips orcombustion tubest comprises va tubular body- 5.*which is flattened toward one end thereof to define anr outlet 6 of elliptical contour for the. bore or longitudinal passage 7 through thekbodi7 5. l
The endr of the body 5 remote from the` out let 6is merged into the'walls cfa hollow base 8the bore of they tubularbody .con-y tinuing throughrthe ywalls of the vbase and opening into theinterior of the latter. The
ibase 8 isarcuate in cross sectionalcontour,
being` struck about afradius greaterV than that of the .body 5 and being locatedwith the longitudinal axis thereof intersectinggat `right 'angles Lthe longitudinalz axis of `the body. In the form of the device illus trated in ythe idrawings, the base' portion `8 constitutes amajor yportion o fa` cylinder, thus defining a .pair of sideportionsor wings which .extend forwardly of'the adyjacent end of the tubular body, the outer or'` free side edges Vof the side'portions being located in spaced relationto thefproxiinate end ofthe ,body 5. Extending` obliquely fromfthe outer side. edges ofthe sideportionsfof 'the q base 8 and preferably 'jformedfintegrally withthe latter areV clamp sections 9 an d 10 respectively, which clamp` sections are curved to conforinto the cross sectional 'com tour of one of the feed pipes f2 and extend from the outer sideedges ofthe Vside por- 4 tionsv ofthebase to .points located' diametri-V 1 cally opposite gon theffeedtube 2 when the outer side k edges of ythe side yportions ofthe f base 8'` arei-nabuttingi relation to thefeedV ltube v2., -Thejclamp section 9 lis provided ywith outwardly extending projections or Q lugs A11y atgitsl outer edge,4 whichl lugs are adapted t0 enter socket np ortio1'1s`12'- proi i vided at one `side "edge of a*clamp.section-lf` 1 3 which.l is v subst'antially .semi-cylindrical" v in form-,andiis rcornplemerital to lthejclanp Y sections 91 and r10.v4 rIjhe clamp section 10 is formed with an outwardly extending'intee gral lug or ear 14 at itsside edge'adapted to looV lie in flatwise contiguous relation to a cooperating lug or' ear 15 which is formed ony the clamp section 13 to extend outwardly from the side edge thereof contiguous to the clamp ksection 10. rlhe cooperating lugs or ears 14 and 15 are provided with aligned "bolt receiving openings therethrough and a bolt 16 may be projected therethrough and a nut screwed on the end thereof to releasably clamp the base 8to the feed pipe 2.
The base-8 is open at its ends and is provided witlifapertures 17 of relativelylarge extent through the walls ofthe side portions thereof. The clamp sections'9, 10 and k13 are apertured for vthe salieV of lightness,
- if desired.
From the foregoing deseriptionof the various parts of the device, theoperation thereof` may be readily understood. In
securing a vtip or combustion tube et to one ofthe branches orL feed pipes 2, therformer Vis arrangedV with the base portion 8 in en- `compatsing relation Vto the feed orifices 3 'sof that a hydro-carbon fuel projected through the feedorifices 3 will enter the combustion tube 410i' longitudinal passage V' through the base. 8 and will be projected alongk thebore orlongitudinal passage? lto the outletv thereof. Assta'ted, the outlet 6 is substantially elliptical in contour, thereby providin, ;a`flat or laterallyelongated Viiame when a combustible mixture is passing through the body 5 andl .is ignited 'at the j Outlet. Moreover, the outlet` 6 is relatively restricted since the minor axis thereof is less "jthanfthe diameter or distance between vpoints of the bore or longitudinal passage 7 at the inlet end thereof. Airispermitted to enterthe bore orvpassage 7 through the v-apertures117 and the open ends'of the base 8 and'mingles with the hydro-carbon fuel Vfed through the base to the body'5`.
The commingled hydro-carbonfuel andV` oxygen will bethorou'ghlyl and intimately mixed in passing fromk the base ,to and Vthrough the Velliptical outlet 6. The body 5 is formed with aflat bead or external an- .nular enlargement '18 in the 'outletK4 end if V f eo
thereof, whereby the body 5 is not likely to"L be 1 rendered unserviceable readily yon account of oxidation'or'ifracture of the body at the v"outlet fend thereof. y With the construction described in the 1 timate commingling of the hydro-carbon fuel 'and airenteringjthe inlet of the body i and a combustible fuel which willbe com-k pletely consumed is thus provided. c y
Gbviously, our invention is susceptible :of embodimentk in forms other than that il- Y lustrated in the accompanying drawings and we therefore consider as our own lell modifications of theforms of the device herein'disclosed, which fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is The combinationKV with afsupply tube having a lateral feed orifice through its Awalls of a burner comprising a tubular body and a hollow base into which the tubular body c ismerged at one of its ends, the bore of the tubular body continuing through the walls 0f the base and opening into the interior of the latter, said base having a pairv of side portions extending forwardly of the proximate end of the tubular body, a clamp section merged into one of the side portions of the base along the outer sideA edge of the latter, a second clamp section merged into' the other'sidek portion of lthe base #along the outer side'k edge' of the latter,"said clamp sections being adapted to terminate at their youter side edges in a diametrical plane of V the supply tube wh'en'the 'outer ,s'ide edges (of thek side portions of the basea're in abutting relation to the peripheral wallof the supply tube, one of lsaid clamp sections having an outwardly extending lug at its outer edge4 andthel othery of'said clamp sections having al perforated outwardly extending ear at its outer edge', la clamp section complementalto said iirstnained and said; second named Vclamp sections, said l'thirglclamp section being adapted to exrtend in engagement with'the outer Yperipheral wall ofthe supply tube vrbetween the outer edges of the first and second named clamp sections and having aA socket portion at onevside edge adapted to receive and engage' with the lug on Aoneofth'eother clamp sections and having anear at its other side edge provided with al perforation in register 4`with ythe perforationin the earof'the remaining clamp section, ian`d a fastening'deyvice for holding said perforatedfears together, whereby said third named clamp section will be releasablyheld against displacement froml said first named and saidk ysecond named clamp 4sections and said base may be held against said supply tube with fthe outer side edges of the side portionsv of the base clamped against the supply tube at 'opposite sides/fof the'late'ralV feed 'orifice in the latter.
