' JONAS NORTHROP, 0F HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOPEDALE MANU- l FACTURING COMPANY, F MILFOBD, MASSACHUSETTS, VA CORPORATION 0F MASSA- citizen of the. United State of tain new and ,f v cnosnrrs.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known 'that I, JoNAs NonrHRoP, a
Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and Massachusetts, have invented ceruseul Improvements 1n y' Picker-Stick Checks for Looms; and Ido hereby ,declare `the following to be a full,
lclear, and exact description ofthe invention,
'such as willenable others skilled in the art same.
' ganize and improve picker stick checks, particuiariy with the object of @hearing and stopping the shuttle in an eicient manner,
'and providing meansA for regulating its action'as the .parts wear in use. To this end the invention consists in the picker stick check hereinafter described and particularly' defined in the claims.`
ing the fpreferred form of the invention,
, ber of the the reference character 20, is
In the accompanying drawings illustprab 1g. 1- is a ront elevation of the check; Fig. 2 is an enlar ed view of the female member of the chec and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the male member. l j.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention is described as follows: The lay beam 1 is provided with the usual box 2 and picker stick slot, through which the extends, being provided upon its upper end with ashuttle check fi.V To the lay is attached a bracket 5, provided with a male member carrying arm 6. The female mem.-
picker stick check is indicatedv in a general way by the reference character 7, and consists of a base 8, consisting of an angle bar secured to the stai. Mounted on the angle bar is the loop 9 which consists of a rectangular piece of metal having feet 10, bly which it is secured to the angle bar 8 he loop is'lined upon opposite sides with friction leather 11, between which the male member, indicated in a general way by received. The female member is secured to the stati` by means of the clip 12, which embraces the staff by means of its bolt 13, and securely attaches the female member thereto. y
The male member of the picker stick check consists of the angle member 21, which is the male member support, having a foot 22 States, residing at V.Application led August 16, 1921. Serial No. 492,732.
The present invention relates to an imf picker stick 3.

arranged at right angles to the portion 21, which is slotted at 23 to receive the bolt 24, by which the member is secured to the male member supporting portion 6 of the bracket 5 in adjusted position. `At the end of the member 21 are attached two leather covered spring mem-bers 25, being riveted thereto at 26. The rear ends of the spring membersv 25 are received between the two nuts 27 supported on the adjusting screw 28. The adjusting screw passes through a hole in the member` 21,1 and is held from endwise movement with relation thereto by means of a collar 29 secured to the adjusting screw 28, which abuts against one side of the member 21 and on the other side by means of a washer 30 held `in cotter pin 31,i between which washer 'and member 21 is interposed a spring wire 32, which is wound kone or more times around place by a i the adjusting screw and has its two ends extended in opposite directions, lying against the foot 22 of the male member support 21. The spring 32 causes the collar 29 to bear with suiiiclent pressure upon the male member support 21 to hold it from accidental rotation with relation thereto. The l' adjusting screw 28 is provided with a rightone end vand a. left-hand thread on the other, which engage the two adjusting nuts 27 respectively. The arrangement is such that byturning the adjusting screw 28, the free ends members 25 may be ,drawn closer together, or permitted to expand farther apart, so that the resistance offered to the impalement of the female member on the male may motion of the shuttle effectively without subjecting the parts to shock, and to elimi-V of the spring be f adjusted to such an amount as to arrest therv may enter through theslot in the shuttle los.
. the shuttle should Vbe boxed at a precise fp osition in the shuttle box so that the fe'eler-' allowing the spring members of the check to expand a slightly greater distance to compensate for the enlargement in size of the female member and the reduction in size of-the male memben Thus, when the attachment is first ap lied to a loom, the adjustment will be ma e so as to stop the shuttle in correct position. As wear advances, the adjusting screw will be turned to move the nuts 27 slightly farther outward, so as to maintain the position of stopping of the shuttle.
It will be observed that the female member may be easily removed from the pickery stick staff by* loosening the clip 12 and drop- -i ping it omthe'st'af, and taking off the member which can be easily replaced by a new one'. It will also be observed that the male member may be adjusted longitudinally of the male member supporting portion of the bracket, correctly to position the male member with relation to the picker stick staff by loosening'the bolt 24 and moving it backward and forward until it is centered with relation to the female member on the picker stick staff. It will also be observed that the male member may be moved in its entirety by removing the bolt 24, and a new male member putin place and adjusted in secured position by the same bolt. The male mem ber supportin portion of the bracket 5 is channeled, and it receives the foot 22 and both of the ends 27 Within the channel, so that the male member is rigidly supported in correct position with relation to the picker stick staff. It is also to be noted that the picker stick vcheck bracket 5 is longitudinally adjustable upon the lay, being secured thereto by a bolt which passes from an elongated slot in the foot of the bracket 5, which engages ythe rear side of the lay. The bracket is not liablev to displacement on the lay by reason of the fact that it is provided with two lugs which engage the under side of the lay and together witli the bolt hold the bracket from turning.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A picker stick check for loomsy having, in combination, male and female members, the one adapted to be Asecured t0 the picker stick staff, and the other to the lay, one of the members being provided with means for adjustment of its size, so as to determine the position of stopping of the picker stai` and shuttle.
2. A picker stick check for looms having,
in combination, male and female members, l
one member being attached to the picker" stick staff and the other to the lay, the male member comprising a male member support and two spring members attached thereto, and meansfor adjusting the outward'position of the free ends of the spring members.
3. A picker stick check" for looms having,
in combination, a female member consisting; of a frame provided with parallel friction. material lined sides attached to the picker;
stick staff, a male member comprising a male member support attached to the lay4 and having two spring members attached at their ends to the male member support, and
means for limiting the outward positions..
of the spring members. p
4. A picker stick check for looms having in combination, a female member having an elongated vertical o ening attached to the picker stick stati", ama emember, comprising a male member support having spring members attached on its end adapted to enter the opening in the female member. and to l 'i press outwardly against the walls thereof,
