UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADVERTISING-CARD HOLDER.
Application filed July 18, 1921. Serial No. 485,544.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARY EARL RUB- srLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sauk Rapids, in the county of Benton and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Card Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an advertising device, and particularly, to such a device adapted to be attached to an automobile or other vehicle. It has become quite a common practice to attach signs of various kinds to automobiles, so that when the machine is the city, the sign will be exhibited. r
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to receive an advertising card and which may be quickly and easily-"attached to an automobile without providing such automobile with any additional fastening mechanism.
It is a further object of the invention to construct such a device of flexible material and to provide the same with fasteners ada ted to enga e the usual curtain buttons of the automobi e.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully apparent from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which v Fig.1 is a plan view of the device showing an advertising card therein;
ig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the parts on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4-4 of eferring to the drawings, the device is seen tocomprise a rear or backing portion 1 of solid material and a front or border portion 2. The border portion 2 surrounds an opening of general rectangular form and a flexible sheet of transparent material 3, such as celluloid, is secured to said border portion. A piece of material 4 is folded over the top edge of the border portion 2 and forms a reinforcing means therefor, the rear edge of said piece of material extending downwardly over the backing portion 1. The border portion '2 is stitched with a double row of stitching around the bottom and sides of the device, which stitching extends through the backing portion 1. The upper edge however of the backing ortion is free, thus forming an open side t rough which the advertising card a may be inserted. The inner row of stitching throu h the border portion also passes through t e sheet 3 and secures the same in position. Two rows of stitching are also passed through the top portion of the device above the to edge of the backing 1. These rows of stitc ing pass through the folded over por tion 2 and the piece of material 4.
In actual construction, the device is made of but two pieces of fabric. One of these pieces is of substantially rectangular form but somewhat wider at one end, the wider end having a rectangular opening cut therein. The piece is first folded so that the narrower and solidportion substantially covers the rectangular openin in the wider portion. The edges of the wi er portion are then folded inwardly at the outer side, as shown at 2 to be of the same width as the solid portion which forms the backing portion 1. The edge of the piece above the rectangular opening is now folded rearwardly forming the piece 2', which extends downwardly below the upper edge of the portion 1. The second piece of material which is also of general rectangular shape, shown as4, is now folded over the top of the device, the sheet of transparent material 3 inserted. as shown, and the rows of stitching, then added to secure the portions together, thus forming a flexible open envelope.
The device is adapted to be secured to the buttons customarily provided on the automobile top for the side curtains, and to this end the device is provided at each end with spaced fastener members 5 which are of open resilient construction adapted to be ositioned over the said curtain buttons.
he device can thus be quickly and easily attached and detached from the vehicle without any change in the latter. The rear edge of the piece 4 covers the opening of the device so that dust and dirt is effectively prevented from entering the same. The surface of the advertising card is also protected by the transparent sheet 3 and et said card is clearly visible and readable t erethrough.
While any desired material may be used, it has been found, in ractice, that the material commonly used or vehicle or automobile curtains is very eflicient for the pur ose. The device can, of course, be made of ifl'erent sizes, either to extend along the side of the automobile or to extend entirely acrOSs the back thereof. The device being made of flexible material, it is in no danger of being broken, can be readily applied and withstands the shocks incident to the motion of the vehicle without any damage or deterioration.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details and proportions of the device without departing from the scope of-applicants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.
' What is claimed is 1. An advertising card exhibiting device comprising a substantially rectangular flexible backing portion, a border portion of flexible materialfoverlying said backing portion around the edges thereof and secured thereto, except at the top edge, thus forming therewith a card retaining recess, a transparent sheet of flexible material inside of said border, and means at each end of the device extending through the border and backing portion for attaching the same to the curtain buttons of an automobile.
2. An advertising device comprising a flat flexible envelope adapted to receive an advertising card having a flexible transparent sheet of material in the front thereof, through which said sign is visible, said envelope being open at its top edge and hav-. ing a piece of material folded over the top edge and secured at each side thereof forming a reinforcing strip and extending downwardly at the rear portion over the opening shape but Wider at oneend thanvthe. other and having a rectangular'opening cut in said wider end, said piece being folded along a substantially central line to bring the solid portion over the said opening and then having the wider portion folded inwardly under the folded-over portion, a piece of flexible transparent material placed beneath the folded portions and stitched along the bottom and sides, the top edge of the foldedover solid portion being left free whereby an open-sided flexible envelopeis formed having a transparent flexible face.
5. The structure set forth in claim 4, the top edge of the wider ortion of the piece of material beingalso fo ded rearwardly to ex tend beyond and beneath the folded-over edge of the narrower portion,
6. The structure set forth in claim 4, and an extra piece of material folded over the top edge and stitched thereto, the rear edge of this piece of material also extending beyond and overlapping the free edge of the folded narrower piece of material.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
