Be it known that I, EDGAR J. Bloom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiflin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Tm rovements in Force Pumps, of which the fol owing is a specification.
This invention relates to force pumps and has for its object a pump especially designed for chassis lubrication on an automobile and for lubricating other machinery. One of the new types of lubrication being introduced 18 chassis lubrication from a common and centralized source. By this arran ement it is possible to lubricate the shack e bolts and even some of the points on the running gear, such as the knuckle pins, drag link bolts, etc.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a force pump of improved construction to be mounted on the dash of the car. The specific improvement is an arrangement which permits the charging ofthe pump chamber ahead of the plunger without requiring the leather cup washers passing an intake orifice. Anyone who has had experience with leather cup washers knows that they are very easily deranged and very often made useless when the cup Washer passes an orifice or any irregularity in the passage containing it.
It is the object of the present inventlon to provide a valve through the plunger which opens up fully on the final portion of the back stroke. This valve closes against its seat tightly on the initial movement of the plunger forward which forces the charge ahead of the plunger. The plunger then forces the charge out of the pump. In short, the force pump has a plunger in which is a valve and passage which serves with the aid of gravity to take in a charge ahead of the main plunger to do away with the necessity of having the cup washers pass the intake orifice. This will more fully appear from the description following.
The operating force may be either a direct pullon the plunger rod or may have the mechanical advantage of a screw.

a designates the dash of the car; 2 the foot board. It is preferable to secure the oil reservoir and pump to the dash, but, of course, it is immaterial where it is placed. I have provided a special form of fixture which comprises a threaded socket member 6 which may be secured to the hood side of the dash by screws 0. By loosenin the lock nut d the threaded eye bolt 6 may e turned one or more half-turns in or out of the socket to adjust its position correctly with the force pump f so that this eye bolt will be properly arranged to encompass the neck of the ball-likeoil reservoir g. This oil reservoir is/provided with a nipple k that screws into a tapped opening 6 in the barrel of the force pump.
This barrel of the force pump does not act as the cylinder of the pump; it acts simply as an oil reservoir j. The pump cylinder is screws into the end of the barrel f and in this reciprocates an ordinary form of pump plunger which is provided with either one or two leather cup washers m. These washers work very well in a pump provided they do not have to pass any irregularity or orifice which is likely to stroke them the wrong way on movement of the plunger in one direction. The sides of the cylinder 11. are recessed to provide ports t which afford a large port area for the quick filling with the aid of gravity of the working chamber ahead of the plunger. At the end of the chamber is a packing washer or valve seabu.
Screwing into the face of the barrel 7' is a supplemental barrel '0 which performs two important functions. One is that the end of this barrel forms a stop to engage the nut q and thereby stop the inward movement of the main portion of the plunger so as to permit the rod 0 to draw the valve away from its seat and thereby open up the assage through the plunger. The other unction of the supplemental barrel is to afford a cylinder in which reciprocate-s another cup washer w on a small plunger attached to the rear of the rod so as to provide a secondary seal so as to prevent any of the lubricant finding its way back out of the face of the fixture. The main cylinder k is purposely made slightly larger than the barrel 1) so that when the turn handle a: and lock nut z is taken off the rod. the main lunger and the valve may be disassembled by drawing them through the cylinder after the coupling nut y has been taken off. The cylinder k being larger than the supplemental barrel v, the cup Washer 11 can readily pass through it.
The operation has probably already been understood. When the oil flows easily and no great force is required the nut 2 can be run off the threads at the end of the supplemental barrel 2), as is shown in Fig. 2. The plunger rod is drawn back and the nut q or the rear end of the plunger strikes the end of the supplemental barrel 4). Further backward movement of the rod thereby causes the valve 79 to separate from its seat u, thereby o ening the passage through the lunger. Tile lubricant through gravity immediately fills the working chamber ahead of the plunger-due to the large orifice on both sides which open directly into the reservoir 7' of the main barrel f. The bushing s prevents the valve moving backward except a given distance and hence limits the valve opening.
The movement of the rod is then reversed and the valve 77 being held to its seat at by the operating force and the spring 1' keeps the fluid from forcing back and the plunger forces the fluid ahead of it on the working stroke. If there is any leakage whatever here the supplemental cup washer w prevents the same from escaping from the pump along the handle of the pump.
From this description it will be seen that the leather cup washers m are confined strictly in the smooth uninterrupted bore of the cylinder k and are in no way afiected by any irregularity such as a port opening.
The cup washer w keeps any of the oil which fills the chamber of the barrel 1) from leaking out the rear of the barrel due to the action of gravity. Additionally if there is any leakage around the valve 12' and its seat, causing back pressure, this cup washer to prevents the oil forcing out around the operating rod.
What I. claim is:
1. In a force pump, the combination of a cylinder, a plunger provided with a passage longitudinally therethrough and a rearwardly extending supplemental cylinder, and a valve guided in the supplemental cylinder for controlling such passage to allow 'the charging of the chamber ahead of such plunger.
2. A force pump, having in combination, a cylinder, a plunger provided with a passage therethrough and reciprocating in the cylinder, a supplemental cylinder secured to the rear of the main plunger and having one or more ports at the sides, and a valve reciprocating in such sup lemental cylinder and arranged to open an close the passage through the plunger.
3. A force pump, having in combination, a main cylinder, a plunger provided with a passage therethrough and reciprocating in the cylinder, a supplemental cylinder secured to the rear of the main plunger and having one or more ports at its side, a valve reciprocating in the supplemental cylinder and controlling the said passage through the plunger, a rod connected with the valve, a spring normally spacing the valve from the rear end of the cylinder and arrangedto keep it closed, and a stop member which arrests the plunger before the stroke backward is entirely completed and permits a continuation of the all on the rod to compress the spring behind the valve and thereby allow the valve to open.
4. A force pump, having in combination, a main cylinder, a plunger provided with a passage therethrough and reciprocating in the main cylinder, a supplemental cylinder secured to the rear of the plunger, a valve reciprocating in said supplemental cylinder, a. rod secured to such valve, a barrel, a plunger on the rear end of the rod provided with a suitable packing member reciprocating in said barrel, and a stop for arresting the main plunger in its backward movement to permit the rod to draw the valve back independently of the plunger to open the passage throu h the plunger.
5. force pump, having in combination, a main cylinder, a plunger reciprocating in the same and provided with a. passage therethrough, a supplemental cylinder supported at the rear of the plunger, a. valve guided therein and controlling said passage, a rod secured to the valve, a barrel encompassing the rod and whose end is adapted to strike the end of the supplemental cylinder to arrest the plunger on the backward stroke to permit the valve to open ahead of the supplemental plunger, and a second plunge-r secured to the rear of the rod and provided with suitable packing means reciprocating within the said barrel.
6. A force pump, having in combination, a barrel containing a fluid reservoir space, a main cylinder secured to the barrel, aplunger reciprocating in said cylinder and provided with a passage therethrough, a supplemental cylinder at the rear of the main plunger provided with one or more ports opening into the reservoir space of the barrel, a valve reciprocating in the said supplemental cylinder and controlling said passage, a rod by which the plunger and valve are operated secured to the valve, the said plunger being arrested in its backward movement to permit the valve to draw back from its seat, said valve movement inward closing against its seat and the plunger fora ing the fluid ahead.

In a force pump, the combination of a barrel provided with a reservoir space, a main cylinder secured to the front end of the barrel, :1 plunger provided with a passage therethrough and reciprocating in such cylinder, a supplementary cylinder secured to the rear end of the plunger and provided with one or more ports communicating with the oil reservoir portion of the barrel, a valve reciprocating in such supplemental cylinder and controlling said passage, a supplemental barrel secured in the rear end of the main barrel and having one end operating as a stop for the plunger, and a rod secured to the valve, whereby when the rod is drawn back rd and the plunger is arrested by the end of the supplemental barrel the valve 1s drawn back off its seat, the said valve being closed upon the initial forward movement of the rod and the plunger forces the fluid ahead of the same.
8. lln a force pump, a barrel provided with a liquid reservoir, a cylinder secured to the front end of said barrel, a plunger reciprocating in said cylinder and provided with a passage therethrough, a cylinder provided with ports communicating with said reservoir and secured to the rear end of the main plunger and provided with a packing washer at the front end, a valve reciprocating in such supplemental cylinder. and arranged to close against said washer, a rod secured to such valve, a supplemental barrel secured to the rear end of the main barrel and having its front end in the path of the supplemental cylinder to arrest the plunger and permit the rod to draw back the valve from its seat, whereby upon the initial movementof the rod inward the valve seats against the packing member at the forward end of the supplemental cylinder and continued movement of the plunger forces the lubricant ahead of the plunger.
9. In a force pump, the combination of a barrel provided with a liquid reservoir, a main cylinder secured to the forward end of? the barrel, a plunger reciprocating therein and provided with a passage therethrough, a supplemental cylinder secured to the rear end of the main plunger and provided with one or more ports communicating with the liquid reservoir portion of the barrel, a valve reciprocating in the supplemental cylinder and controlling such passage, a plunger rod secured to such valve, a supplemental barrel secured to the rear end of the main barrel and projecting into the path of the supplemental cylinder to arrest the rearward movement of the plun er, a second plunger secured to the rear end of the rod and having packing means engaging the supplemental barrel, and a packlng washer at the forward end of the bore of the supplemental cylinder against which the valve engages after the initial movement forward.
