Description

?atented 9st. 1923.
U N i ST f LIM PRIMING COMPOSITION AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME.
No Drawing.
To all whom if may eoncrrn:
Be it known that I. llsxs RATHSRI'RG. a citizen of Germany. residing at Furth. Bavaria.'Republie of t lermany. have invented new and useful Improved Priming (ompositions and Processes for Producing the F ame. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved 1o priming composition and its object is to produ e a standard priming composition by replacing the l'ulminate of mercury by a more suitable substance,
\Vith this end in view it was proposed to mechanically add suitable bodies or explo sives. For instance so called ignil ion or .lame transmitters were pressed upon the leadazid. which is inflammable with ditiiculty only. for example a mixture of rhodan lead and potassium chlorate and also dior trinitro resorcinate of lead or potassium dinitrtrdinitrosobenzole. while these and similar substances in order to charge percussion-caps and Flobert ammunition were mixed with the t'ulminate. of mercury or the leadazid. Such processes have already become known, although only very recently.
It has now been ascertained that the lead salt of the trinilro-phloroglucine comes very much nearer the object. aimed at of obtaining a standard priming composition. in contradistinction to the mercury fuln'iinate this salt may be stored for any length of time, even in heated. damp rooms. A further advantage of this salt. over the mercury fulminate and recently employed or proposed primings is its total indifference to metals in humid air, more particularly to Application filed October 19, 1921. Serial No. 508,826.
aluminium, brass and copper and also to carbonic acid and other obnoxious gases. as they occur. for instance. in coal mines.
When subjected to heat, it is also far superior to the t'ulminate of mercury, inasmuch as it only evaporates at a tilt-70 higher temperature than .the latter. Its solubility is also considerably less than that. of the fulrninate of mercury. It is. furthern'iore, far easier inflammable than the leadazid and it excels the fulininate of mercury also as a transmitter ot flames or sparks.
These advantages clearly show that a considerable technical progress is attained by employing these salts as primings in the manutaeture of ammunition.
It has also been found that the lead trinitrophloroglucinate. which on ignition generats a stronger gas-pressure than mercury fulminate. may easily be phlegmatized or quicle ened in its action as desired or required. by mixing it mechanically with milder or more powerful explosives.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent. is:
The improved process for the production of a priming composition. which comprises employing the lead salt of the trinitrophloroglucine.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses Witnesses:
Dr. Four, BURKARD, KARL \Vinss.
