VAPOR-UTILIZING DEVICE.

To (c; w from it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES A. Housnn, a cit n of the United States, residing at l. on, in the county of Grant and State of undiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Vapor-Utilizing Devices,
'5 which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the utilization of vapors in the crank case and valve stem chambers of an internal combustion engine by mixing such vapors with the explosive charge, thus reducing the amount of fuel used and adding to the effectiveness of the motor.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for mixing cold air with the vapors.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the comliiination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illusrated in the accompanying drawings and peciiically. pointed out in the appended 5 claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sevoral views, and in which Figure l is a side view of the engine showingmy invention in use.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion or" the pipe 5 and showing its connection with the breather tube.
Figure 3 is a sectional View through part of an engine showing the device in use.
Figure s is a view of the valve 10.
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the part of the tube carrying the valve.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view showing the valve 21.
In these views -1 indicates the cylinder block or the motor, 2 the carburetor, 3 the breather pipe through which the crank case s filled with oil and indicates the plates for covering the chambers in which the valve stems and springs are located.
In carrying out my invention I provide a goose neck pipe 5 which is secured to the plates lby the bolts 6 and has a screw coupling 7 at its curved end which covers the air ihtakeS of the carburetor. Openings 9 are formed in the pipe and in the plates 4 so that the pipe is in communication with the chambers covered by said plates. The upper end of the pipe is closed by a screw threaded cap 10 which has slots thereln for admitting air into the pipe. The passage of air through these slots is controlled by a manually operated shutter L which is rotatably connected with the cap and is provided with a handle 13 which extends through a curved slot 14% in the cap. When the temperature of the air is warm the shutter can be entirely opened or the cap can be removed but in cold weather the amount of air entering the pipe must be regulated or entirely shut off by the shutter.
The pipe 17 has one end coupled to pipe 5 adjacent the plug and its other end is coupled to the cap 18 of the breather tube 3. The coupling 19 which couples pipe 17 to pipe 5 is so formed that it provides a pivot for pipe 17 so that the cap 18 can be lifted off the breather tube when oil is to be poured into the same.
A smaller tube 20 is connected with the pipe 5 adjacent the end which carries the coupling 7 and this tube is normally closed by a valve 21 which is held in closed position by the spring 22. This valve will take care any back-fire.
It will thus be seen that the suction created by the moving pistons will draw vapor from the crank case and the valve stem chambers and as this vapor and the air mixed therewith is hot it will act to increase the effect oi the explosive mixture and at the same time reduce the amount of gasoline or other fuel used. By having the coupling 7 screw threaded on the pipe 5 it may be moved to permit adjustment of the carburetor or its removal from the motor.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with an internal combustion motor and its carburetor, a pipe connected with the carbureter and a pipe pivotally connected with the first mentioned pipe and having a cap at its other end for closing the breather tube of the crank case.
2. In combination with an internal combustion motor and its carburetor, a pipe connected With the earbureter and with valve spring chambers and a pipe hingedly connected with the first mentioned pipe and passing through the breather tube cap.
3. In combination with an internal combustion motor and its cerbureter, a goose neck pipe connected with the earbureter, b means for connecting the pipe W1th the valve sarin chambers of the motor a. tube 1' e v a the hingedly connected with the pipe, a cap car- 10 ried by the tube for Covering the. breather tube of the crank case, a Valve for permitting air to pass into the pipe at its'front end and a spring valve in the pipe adjacent its point of'conneetion with the carbnreter. r
