Description

Sept. 25', 1923.
I H w \wx/v 7 0 I B. W. MACY ELECTRICALLY HEATED IRONING DEVICE Filed May 6. 1922 Patented Sept. 25, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BARNETT WRIGHT MACY, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR TO ELECTRIC HEAT- ING CORPORATION, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, A CORPORATION OF FLORIDA. v
, ELECTRICALLY-HEATED IRONING DEVICE.
Application filed May 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNETT WRIGHT MAoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval.
and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electri- (fully-Heated Ironing'Devices, of whichthe following is a specification.
My said invention relates to an improved electrically heated ironing device and it is an object of the same to provide a highly efficient device of this character in which the heating element which is immersed in liquid is made of material having a low resistance and is never brought'to a very high'temperature.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts.
The single figure shows a transverse section through a cufi ironer.
In the drawing reference character 10 indicates a cufl' ironereof conventional type, the invention, however, not being limited to the particular type of ironing device as the essential featuresmay' be utilized in devices of various types for ironing clothing and also for various other purposes. The cufi ironer here shown has a lid 11 securely fastened in place by screws 12, the lid having mounted thereon a valve 13 by means of which the oil or other liquid shown at 14 can be introduced or replenished as needed.
A pair of supports, preferably in the form of rods 15, are secured to the cover in any convenient manner and extend through the same to provide terminals to which conduc-.
tors may be secured by nuts 15' in conventional manner,'the rods being insulated from the cover by bushings 16 and washers 17. At their lower ends the rods are oppositely bent, in this instance, at anglescorrespond ing to the slopes of the lower wall-of the cuff ironer and each rod has mounted thereon a cylindrical member 18 of insulating mate-' rial. These members are held in place by nuts threaded on the rod and are provided with helical-peripheral grooves 19 extending from end to end thereof. A closely coiled fine wire 20 of material ofl'ering approximately the same resistance to the passage of electricity as does the liquid indicated at 14 or a slightly less resistance is laid about each of the members 18 arid along the helical 1922. Serial No. 559,016.
understood that I may arrange the insu lators in otherpositions in the casing and may vary the structure in other respects within the scopeof my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In the operation of the device current will pass through one of the rods 15 to an end of the wire 20 and thence through the wire 20 to the other support 15. In so doing it will heat the wire. which by reason of the large number of coils has a very extensive surface and the heat will pass therefrom to the oil or other liquid and will raise the temperature to the desired degree thus forming a reservoir of heated liquid which will trans-' mit the heat equally to all parts thereof and will retain the high temperature for an extended period of time. On account of the low density of the heating element and the even distribution of heat it will be obvious candescent, as in various other electric heaters and similar appliances, and as a matter of fact-it is kept at a temperature much lower than that necessary to produce incandescence.
Having thus vention, what I claim as new an secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An electrical ironing device having an internal chamber containing oil and an outer ironing surface, a heating coil immersed in said oil and formed of material having relatively low resistance whereby carbonization of the oil, is prevented, said heating coil consisting of a finely coiled wire. laid in convolutions to accommodate the wire to the size of the chamber, the liquid being free to circulate through and around the ,convolutions of the heating coil,- substantially as set forth.
2. An electric ironing device havingan internal chamber containing a-fiuid and an outer ironing surface, supporting means fully described my said iiidesire to chamber and an outer ironing surface, a 7
pair of supports of conducting material extending through the wall of the chamber and into the interior thereof, insulating means carried by said supports and a heating element of coiled wire carried by the insulating means and connected at opposite ends to the respective supports, substantially asset forth.
4:. An ironing device comprising a body having a compartment holding a liquid, a heating element consisting of a finely coiled wire disposed in coiled arrangement Within the compartment, the liquid surrounding the said coiled wire and filling the space between the convolutions thereof, and means to support the same in spaced relation to th walls thereof, substantially as set forth.
5. An ironing device comprising a body having a chamber holding a liquid and an outer ironing surface, a pair of helically grooved cylindrical insulating devices resting against the wall of the chamber next to the ironing surface, a heating element com- 39 prising a. finely coiled wire lying in said grooves and spaced from the ironing surface, means for supporting the insulating devices and means for connecting electrical conductors to the heating element, substantially as set forth.
6. An ironing device comprising a body having a V-shaped ironing surface and an internal chamber holding a liquid, a pair of helically grooved insulators resting against walls of the chamber oppositethe ironing surfaces, :1 wire lying in said grooves and spaced from said walls, and means opposite the junction of said walls for supporting the wire intermediate said insulators out of contact with the wall of the chamber, substantially as set-forth.
7. An ironing device having a body whose ironing surface is formed by a pair of oppositely sloping walls, and a pair of heating coils within the body, one resting against'each of the said walls, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof; I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Jacksonville, Florida, this 2nd dayof May, D. nineteen hundred and twenty-two.
