To-aZZ whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, CH RLES E. SEEMAN and LOUIS V. BARAOH, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,-
7 have invented certain new and useful Tm prove'inents 1n Bllliard Cues, ofwhich the following is'a specification,
This invention-relates to improvements in billiard or pool 'cues, moreparticularly to the points thereof 'and'theobjects thereofare'toprovidea novel form of one point which embodies positive and reliable means for secur ng-the one tip thereto, andwhlch includes a removable socket element permit ting of its replacement when worn, such substit'ution providing for the economical pro longed use ofthe more expensive parts'of the point associated therewith. I
Fu1thei-*;-objects of the invention are to provide cue point of the character stated, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efiicient in its-use,
attractive in appearancareadily attached in position to the cue, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
lViththeforegoingeand other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but 1t is to be understood that changes, variatlons, and modlfications can be resorted to which come within the scope'of the claims hereunto appended. V
In the drawing forming a portion of this i specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate. corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cue equipped with our improved point, with a portion of the former broken away.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe point.
Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the socket element.
Figure 5 is a washer. v 7
Referring, in detail to the drawings 1 perspective view of the designates the tapering smaller end of a cue 'of a conventional form, which is ordinarily constructed from wood, but may be made from any other suitable materials. 7
The present'invention resides in provid ng the cue -with an improved point 2, and in FigureQ of the drawings the preferred form thereof is illustrated, including'an internally threaded ferrule 3. The latter is of the same outsidediameter as the one end against which it ismount'ed and extends flush therewith. The ferrule is preferably constructed from metal but ivory or other materials may also be used. a e
A 'socketplug &, having its outer face formed with peripheral threads 5 is threadably mounted in the, ferrule 3 and projects slightly beyond the lower end thereof, The socket plug projection G .isformed to provide'a fiareupon' which the threaded collar Tie fixedly forced before the plug 4. is 5 mountec'linthe ferrule 3;"The plug t and the collar '7- are preferably constructed from fibre, but composition materials may also be successfully employed for these parts. The peripheryof the collar 7 is flush witlrthe outer face of the-ferrule 3. l
The socket plug a is further provided with an enlarged threaded bore of considerable depth forming the socket 8 into which the threaded tenon 9 of the cue'is threadably attached. A small central bore 10 extends from the bottom of the socket 8 to the lower end of the plug 4, for the purpose to be described.
The lower face of the collar 7 is flush with the lower face of the socket plug 4 and these combined faces form the seat ll-upon which the one tip 12 is adhesively secured.
The seat 11 is formed with a plurality of circular grooves 13 which together with the small bore 10 are designed for the purpose of providing seat surface recesses and in equalities capable of engaging the adherent agent, namely cement, etc., thereby assuring the fixed adhesion of the one tip 12 upon the comparative expensive ferrule 3 associated therewith.
l/Vhat weclaim is 1. The combination-with a tapering one having a tenoned end, of a ferrule, a plug mounted in said ferrule, said tenoned cue end mounted in said plug, a collar secured to the lower: end of said plug andlforming a seat 'in conjunction therewith and a cue tip adhesively secured to said seat, said seats formed with recesses capable of augmenting the adhesive qualities of the agent connecting the cue tips to said seat, the lower end of said plug projectingfrom said ferrule and formed with aflare adapted for locking said collar in position on said plug.
1 :2; The-combination Witha tapering cue i ha-Vinga tenonedend,:of a ferrule, a plug threadably mounted in said ferrule, said tenoned cue end tlrreadably mounted in said plug, Na collar threadably secured to the lowerend of said plug and forming a seat in! con unction therewlth, and a cue -t1p adhes'ively secured (to said seat, said seat 7 formed with recesses capable-of augmentlng the adhesive qualities of the agent conneeting'the cue tips to said seats, a the lower end of "said plug projecting from said ferrule 3 andformed witlraiflareadapted for locking :said eollar .in :position on said plug;-
13..- Thegombination with a tapering cue liavinga tenoned end, of a ferrule, a plug detachably mounted in said ferrule", said tenonedcue end detachabl-y mounted in said plug, a Icollar detaohably secured .to the 1 lower endofsaid plugand forming 'asseat in conjunction therewith, and a cue tipuadhesively secured to said seat, said seats formed with recesses capable of'augmenting and formediwith a'flareadapted for locking the adhesive qualities of the agent connecting the cue tips tosald -se,at, the-1lowerend ofsa-id plug vprojecting from said ferrule said .collariin position on said eplug.
V ThecoIn'oin-ation with a'taperingcuehaving 'a tenoned end, ferrule, a plug formed with a'socket secured in said fer rule,'sa1-d 'tenoned euefend engaged in 'the socket of the said plug, a collar attached to the lower end of said plug and forminga seat .inconjunction therewitlnand a cue tip adhesively secured to. saidfseat, said seat formed with recesses .capable of'augment ing a the adhesive qualities 7 of the agent connectingthe cuetips to said :seats, thelo'wer end of said plug projecting from said ferrujle and-formed Witlrafiare adapted for locking said collar in position on said plug.
7 The combinationwithra tapering cue formed wlth a tenon at ltssrnalleriend, a
ferrule provided with athreaded .,bore, a plug having peripheral threads mounted in said threaded ferrule, the low-er; end of said adapted for engagementwith saidtenoned cue'end', and a cue t1p adhesively'mounted on saidseat, saldr seat formed with'la plurality. of circular grooves. and with a small 7 bore vfor augmenting the adhesive qualities of the agent connecting said one tips to said Seat. a a "V In testimony whereof we alfix our signatures, a I l V LOUIS v, BABAGH.
