Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIcE. 4
wILLIAM II. LUNT, or EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPRQVEMENT lN FILTERS.
Specification formirg part of Leiters Patent No. 146,833, dated January E7, 1874; application filed January 3, 1874.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. LUNT, of East Cambridge, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Filters; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is an elevation, Fig. 2 a longitudinaland vertical section, and Fig. 3 a bottom view, of one of my improved filters.
My invention consists in the combination of a filtering-valve and a sleeve and pitman with a case and its educt, all being constructed and arranged substantially in manner and to operate as hereinafter explained.
In the drawings, A denotes a cylindrical case, open at top, and there provided with a female screw, s, for enabling such case tb be screwed upon the nose of a faucet projecting `from a water conduit or pipe. From and out of the bottom of the case A a discharging educt or tube, B, projects, as shown, and has arranged upon it concentrically another tube or sleeve, C. The tube B is notched diametrically, as shown at a a, to receive a rod or bar, c, extending through and fixed in the sleeve, and 4also going through the lower part of a pitman,d, projecting downward from a filtering-valve, D. This valve operates with a valve-seat, E, formed at the bottom of the case; and the valve consists of a hollow box, having a perforated bottom, foraminous cover, and one or more iilteringmediums or disks, placed between the cover and bottom, the whole being so as to enable water, when the valve is down upon its seat, to filter through suchvalve, and thereby be deprived of foreign substances and escape through the educts.
On taking hold of the sleeve C and raising it on the nose or educt B, the valve may be forced upward olf its seat, so as to enable the water'freely to flow around the valve, and between it and its seat, and escape by the nose.
With a filter thus made, water can be dis charged from it either filtered or uniil-tered, as circumstances may require.
It will be evident that, to cleanse the lter of sediment at any time, it will only be necessary to force the valve upward. The water escaping over and around it will wash it clear.
I claim- The combination of the filtering-valve D, and the sleeve C, and pitman d (connected as described) with the case A'and its educt or discharging-nose B, all being arranged and to operate substantially as set forth.
YVILLIAM II. LUNT.
