coat-can SUPPORT.
Application led October 5, 1922. Sfrial No. 592,640.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WoJomcI-I G. JAMnoG, a citizen of the United States of America', residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Car Supports, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports for coal cars of either the wooden or metallic type, and has particular reference to that species of coal car support adapted to be positioned between the side walls of the cai' for preventing any outward bulging or breaking of the same due to the pressure of the coal therebetween. l
Theprimary object of this invention is the provision of such a support that is both simple and inexpensive of manufacture and a support that may be readily attached to cars in an expeditious manner and one wherein the same may be positioned upon coal cars of varying dimensions.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature thereof is better understood, and the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational View partly in section of my improved device showing the saine attached to brackets carried by the side walls of the'car, said side walls being shown in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the same showing in addition thereto a means for readily operating the device for controlling the adjustability thereof when once installedin the car,
Figure 3 is a top plan View of a portion of the device, one of the elements being shown in both full and dotted lines,
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the eral views there is disclosed in outline a portion of a coal car comprising side walls 1 yand 2 and disposed diametrically opposite each other upon the inner "faces of the said walls are inverted L-shaped bracket members 3 and 4. These bracket members are secured to the walls of the car by rivets 5 or the like and the upper longitudinal wall of the bracket member 4 'is centrally apertured for receiving a vertically disposed pivot pin 6 for pivotally securing upon said horizontal wall of the bracket member the shoulder 12 for preventing disengagement of this screw threaded rod 9 from the key slot in the bracket 3 when the same is positioned as shownin Figs. 1 and 2. For positioning this rod 9 within the bracket the same is positioned as shown in full lines in Figs. 3 and 4 for allowing the hooked end thereof to pass through the slot, after which the same may be turned to be inter-connected with the opposite screw threaded rod 7 bv means hereinafter more fully described.
s before stated, the rods 7 and 9 are screw threaded and it is to be herein noted that t-hese screw threaded rods are detachably connected by means of a form of turn buckle denoted in general by the numeral 13. This turn buckle 13 may be of any desired form, but for purposes of illustra-tion I have shown the same as comprising a casting having a central flattened portion 14 'having formed thereon Oppositely project-- ing side legs -15 and 16, these legs having a. central longitudinally extending bore 17 the same being screw threaded for reception of the screw threads of the rods 7 and 9. It will therefore be seen that by engaging these rods within the screw threaded bores of the. turn buckle 13 and by imparting a turning movement to the said turn buckle a rigid connection will be provided between the ends of .the rods. As a meansor actuating the seid turn .buelde the attened portion 14 thereof may be centrally apertured as; at 18 for reeeiving an operating bar 19 shown 'inFi.2.
Henges 21 :formed thereon, these side ilnnges carrying oppositely extending ear portions 22 sniftbiyA npertured for receiving suit-able securinfgg means for attaching these brackets tothe vWalls ofthe car. In the preferred embodiment of myv invention it is desirable that n plurality of these supports be positioned `Within each coal car and it is t0 be noted that the best results are to be procured ii. these' supportsare positioned Within the car preliminarily to the loading of the same with coal, but, however, should it be desired to lill the car with' the devices in an inoperative position,'the turn buckle may be so manipulated as to disengage the same .from Jche rod members 7 and 9 at which time the detachable rod 9 may be removed from. its bracket for allowing the opposite rod 7 to be swung upon .its pivot 6 in which position the rod 9 :may be adventegeousiy secured within the turn buckle end then supported upon the opposite ,rodl 7 by screwing the turn' buckle 13 thereon.
Minor .changes may be made in the invention Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as claimed.
for detachably connecting the opposite 'free ends of the said rodmembers, said rod mem,
bers being screw threaded and adapted yto receive a turn buckle connection at their ends, the said detachable rod member beingso formed at one of its ends as to prevent disengagement from, its adjacent bracket When the two rods are interconnected.
in ltestimony whereof I aiix my signature.
