To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I HENRY A, Roman, a citizen of the United tates, residing at Canton, in the countyof Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Rolling Mill, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rollin mills and more particularly to cold rol ing mills especially designed for cold rolling sheet steel or other rolled steel products.
' As is well understood by those experienced in the production of rolled sheets, the sheets as they come from the hot mill contain numerous irregularities. which must be removed before the sheets are marketable.
The usual practice comprises stretching the sheets in a stretching machine in which the ends of the sheet are clamped, power being applied to stretch the sheet endwise, after the sheets have been passed througha set of cold rolls, several passes being sometimes necessary for a single sheet before the same is sufiiciently smooth and polished.
As the stretching process involves considerable time, and the cold rolling process above mentioned is necessary, together with. the stretching, in order to produce the desired finish upon the sheets, it is the object of the present invention to provide means whereby in a single operation a sheet may be properly finished and polished, and if necessary stretched by passing the same through a rolling mill.
The above and other objects may be attained by providing a rolling mill compris ing two spaced sets of rolls mounted in the same housing, the after rolls being arranged to receive a sheet before the same is released from the first rolls.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for stretching the sheet between the first rolls and the after rolls, and this object may be attained by providing a fixed gear upon the lower roll of the after rolls and a ratchet gear of greaterdiameter. upon 4 the lower roll of the first rolls, an idler gear meshing with both of said rolls, whereby the first rolls are driven at a-lower speed than the after rolls, theratchet gear allowing the first rolls to slip in the event the stretching upon the sheet is too great, preventing tearing of the'sheet. v a.
will, I of course, be understood that this object may also be attained by forming the after rolls of slightly greater diameter than the first rolls, the gears upon the driven rolls of each set being of equal diameter, in which case the sheet will be caused to travel at less speed throu h the first rolls than through the after rol s, producing the desired stretch in the sheet.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in the form and details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
The invention thus described in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rolling mill embodying the invention, in which the after rolls are speeded with reference to the first set of rolls by a relative difference in the size of gears upon the driven rolls of each set;

. The housings of the mill are indicated at 1--1, and are connected \by the usual tie rods 2. These housings are of sufficient size to accommodate two spaced sets of rolls, but are otherwise of the construction common in rolling mills, The lower roll 3 of the first set of rolls is journaled in suitable permanent. bearings provided in the housings.
The upper roll 4: engages the lower roll and the reduced necks'5 thereof are extended through the openings 6 in the housings and are engaged by the brasses 7 carried in the blocks 8, which are vertically adjustable within said openings by means of the screws 9.
The neck 10 of the lower roll is reduced as at 11 and the ratchet wheel 12 is fixed thereon as by the keys l3. The gear ring 14 is rotatably mounted upon the ratchet wheel, the teeth 15 of the ratchet wheel being proyided with the arcuate peripheral portions 16 upon which the gear ring is journaled.
The gear ring is provided at intervals around its interior with the inclined notches 17, each having a half round bearing portion 18 arranged to receive the ournal portion 19 of a pawl 20 which is adapted to be received entirely within the notch in the gear ring, a sprin 21 being located in a socket 22 communicating with each notch, said spring tending to normally urge the free end of the pawl inward.
It will be noted that the number of teeth upon the ratchet wheel exceeds the number of pawls in the gear ring, the drawings showing eight pawls and twelve teeth, which is about the proper proportion. With this arrangement, two of the awls will always be I in position to engage t e ratchet wheel, regardless of the position of the gear ring with relation to the ratchet wheel.
The gear ring 14 is retained upon the ratchet wheel by means of the disk 23, which is located over the adjacent end of the shaft 11 of the lower roll and connected thereto as by the bolt 24 which is inserted into the tapped bore 25 in the end of the shaft.
The after rolls which are spaced from the first set of rolls comprise the lower roll 26 journaled in suitable permanent hearings in the housing and driven in the usual manner, and the upper roll 27 arranged to engage the lower roll, the reduced necks 28 thereof being engaged by the brasses 7 carried in the blocks 8 which are ad'ustable vertically within the openings 6' y means of the screws 9.
A gear ring 29, of less diameter than the gear ring 1%, is fixed upon the neck of the lower roll 26 as by the keys 30 and meshes with an idler gear 31, which idler gear also meshes with the gear rin 14;, the idler gear being journaled in a suita le bearing bracket 32 fixed upon the housing.
In the form of the invention illustrated, the first set of rolls 3 and 4 and the after rolls 26 and 27 are all shown of the same diameter, the first rolls being rotated more slowly than the after rolls, by means of the gearing shown and above described. A sheet, as shown at A, passed through the rolls in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, will be engaged by the after rolls 26 and 27, before it has been released by the first rolls 3 and 4, and the difierence in speed of the two sets of rolls will cause a certain amount of longitudinal stretch in the sheet as it is passed through the mill, taking out all unevenness in. the sheet in the operation.
By formin the first rolls 3 and 4 of slightly less iameters than the after rolls 26 and 27, the same result may be obtained, without the necessity of providing a relative diflerence in the diameters of the gears 14;
meaeeo and 29, the sheet bein passed through the after rolls more rapi ly than it is passed through the first rolls,'thus producing the desired stretch.
The ratchet gear will allow the first rolls to be .rotated more rapidly than the gear 14 in the event that too great a pull is placed upon the sheet, thus preventing the sheet from being torn. As soon as the emergency is passed the gear ring 14 will again be engaged with the ratchet wheel, causing the first rolls/to be driven positively by the idler gear, the pawls in the gear ring being so located with reference to the teeth of the ratchet wheel that this connection may be made in any position.
I claim I 1. A cold rolling mill for sheets including a housing, two sets of rolls located in the housing, means for driving both sets of rolls in the same direction for passing the sheet through the rolls, the after rolls being arranged to receive the sheet before it is released from the first rolls, the mill being arranged for passing the sheet through the after rolls more rapidly than through the first rolls in order to stretch the sheet, and means for permitting the first set of rolls to be disconnected from the driving means durin the operation of said rolls.
2. cold rolling mill for sheets including a housing, two sets of rolls located in the housing, means for driving both sets of rolls in the same direction for passing the sheet through the rolls, the after rolls being arranged to receive the sheet before it is released from the first rolls, said driving means being arranged for rotating the first rolls more slowly than the after rolls to stretch the sheet, and means for permitting the first set of rolls to be disconnected from the driving means during the operation of said roll.
3. A cold rolling mill for sheets including a housing, two sets of rolls in the housing, a gear fixed upon one of the after rolls, a ratchet gear upon one of the first rolls, an idler gear meshing with both of said gears to drive both sets of rolls in the same direction for the purpose of passing a sheet there- I through, the after rolls being arranged to receive the sheet before it is released from the first rolls, the mill being arranged for passing the sheet through the after rolls more rapidly than through the first rolls for the purpose of stretching the sheet.
4. A cold rolling mill for sheets including a housing, two sets of rolls in the housing, a gear fixed upon one of the after rolls, a ratchet gear upon one of the first rolls, an idler 'gear meshing with both of said gears to drive both sets of rolls in the same direction for the purpose of passing a sheet thereceive the sheet before it is released from the first rolls, and' means for rotating thefirst direction for the purpose of passing a sheet therethrough, the after rolls being arranged to receive the sheet before it is released from the first rolls, the fixed gear being of less diameter than the ratchet gear.
