'The machine of the .present invention `takes the cast stereotype plates kfrom the drag or concavemeni-ber ofa plate casting machine, or other suitable source of plate supply, and conveys the 4plate to aztrimining mechanism, which mechanism trims the curved edges of the plate and cuts off the tail or riser from 'the plate.
In the embodied machine a carrier travels to and from the trimming machine and picks up the plateand brings it -to :the
trimming-station. Further as embodied the carrier engages the plate as 'it lies vin position as cast in a castinginachine and conveys it to-the trimmer. 'The carrier ypreferably engages with vthe yconcave side of lfthe yplate and also preferably continuesto hold it during` the trimming operation.

The machine of the present embodiment comprises a cylindrically shaped or hemicylindrical plate carrier mounted on a shaft,

In said embodiment, the shaft of the plate carrier now moves longitudinally backward without rotation, thereby bringing the plate into position in the trimming mechanism.

` curved edges being therebytrimmed and the l understood also that all said features may be used in cooperation or certain features may be employed without t-he others.
Referring` now to the details of construction of .the embodiment of the invention shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, suitable driving 4means are provided, such as a motor 1 having a pulley 3 mounted upon the motor shaft 2. A belt 4 runs over pulley 3, and over a pulley 5, fixed on the power shaft 6 of the machine? It will beunderstood that any otherq suitable form of driving mechanism may be provided. Shaft 6 extendsv longitudinally of the machine, and is journaled in bearings 7,
, 8, 9, 10 and 11, formed on the machine frame.
Referring now in detail to the embodied form of means for taking or receiving a stereotype plate from a suitable supply station or source of supply, such asvthe cast plate in the drag of a castingmachine, and conveying `it into the trimming'machine, preparatory to trimming, a worm 15fis fixed on shaft 6, and meshing therewith is a worm wheel 16, which is xed on a shaftl17, the shaft being journaled in bearings 18 and- 19 on the machine frame. s
Mounted on shaft .17 is a reversible drive mechanism, and as embodied a double-j awed clutch member 20 is mounted Ito slide, on shaft 17 and connected by a feather'2l to rotate with the shaft. At one side of clutch member 2O is a bevel gear 22, loosely mounted on shaft 17 and having a clutch jaw 23 with which a jaw of clutch member 20 may be slid into engagement to drive the mechanism in one direction. On the opposite side of the clutchmember l33 in the machine .frame 20 are similar means for driving the mechanism in the opposite direction, said-means comprising a bevel gear 24, loose on shaft 17 and having a clutch jaw 25 with which the other jaw `of clutch member 20 is adapted to engage, to drive the mechanism in the opposite direction. In mesh with both bevel gears 22 and 24 is a bevel gear, 30, fixed on a shaft 31, which shaft is journaled at 32 and Fixed on shaft 31 is a gear wheel 34, which meshes with a gear wheel 35. Gear wheel 35 is fixed on a sleeve 36, which sleeve is rotatably journaled in a bearing 37 on the machine frame. Sleeve 36 is provided with a shoulder 38, which to-` gether with the gear wheel 35, holds the" sleeve 36 against longitudinal movement with respect to its bearing. The sleeve 36 is internally longitudinally apertured, and this aperture is provided with screw-threads 39. Within the aperture in sleeve 36is a trimming machine. As embodied, meansare.
provided for preventing rotation of the shaft 44, and consequently as sleeve 36 is rotated, the engagement'. of its screw-thread `39 with the screw-thread 45 of the shaft 44 imparts to the, shaft thenecessary, longitudinal travel.
In said embodiment, in order to longitudinally travel shaft 44 first in one direction to get the plate andthen in the .other direction to bring the plate yto the trimming-mechanism, the direction or rotation of sleeve 36 is reversed. The embodied form of such reversing means comprises a ygear wheel 46 fixed on a shaft 47, which shaft is journaled in the machine frame, and fixed on shaft 47 f is a worm 48, meshing with a worm wheel 49. Worm wheel49 is fixed on a'shaft 50, which is journaled at 51'-and 52 in the man chine frame. n
Formed on the surface of drum 53 is a cam 63, and projecting from the drum 53 is a pin 64. Mounted on the machine frame adgacent to drum is a pivoted detent hook 65, having a hub 66, which is pivoted on a shaft 67 supported on the machine frame. Fixed to hook is a lug 68, with which lugJ the pin 64 on drum 53 during the rotation of the drum is adapted to engage, to operate hook 65 as hereinafter described. Suitable limiting` means for the hook 65 may be provided, the same being shown as a tail 69 eX- tending from the hub 66, and adapted to engage with a pin 70 fixed in the machine frame. A spring 7l is in tension between the tail 69 and some point on the machine frame to yieldingly to hold hook 65 to position.
Slidably mounted in the machine frame is a rod 75, one end thereof being pivoted at 76 to the lever 56. Fixed on rod 75 is a collar 7 7, and in compression between this collar and the machine frame is a spring 7 8, which impcls the lower end of lever 56 to the left in Fig. 5. Shaft 57 extends along the machine, and is provided at different points thcrealong, with two manual operating levers 79, as shown in Figs. l and 5.
The manne-r of operation of the mechanism just described is substantially as follows: f
rIhe operation of the mechanism for travcling shaft 44 to and fro longitudinally will first be described.
When drum 53 is in the position of Figs. 5 and 7, clutch member 20 is in neutral position. that is, out of engagement with the clutch jaws on both bevel gears 22 and Q4. When the hand lever 79 is pushed downwardly in Fig. 5, the lower end of lever 56 is swung to the right in Fig. 5 against the pressure of spring 78, and is caught by hook 65. This movement of lever 56 throws clutch member 2O into engagement with the clutch jaw of bevel gear Q2, and through the mechanism described, sleeve 36 is rotated in the direction to longitudinally advance shaft 44 in the direct-ion of the plate casting machine or other source of plate supply.
Due to the rotation of drum 53, pin 64 at the proper time strikes lug 68, thereby rocking hook 65, and thus releasing the lower end of lever 56. Under the impulsion of spring 78 the lower end of lever 56 is swung to the left in Fig. 5, but owing to cam 63 being now out of the path of the lever. it passes to the extreme left end of its travel, thereby throwing clutch 2O into engagement with the clutch jaw of bevel gear 234. This, through the gear connections described, causes sleeve 36 to rotate in the opposite direction, and shaft 44 is longitudinally traveled in the reverse direction from that previously described. In the meantime the mechanism on shaft 44 has secured the plate which is to be trimmed and brings it back into the trimming machine on this return longitudinal movement. The operation and the mechanisminvolved in the foregoing will be later described.
Vhen clutch member 2U is shifted by lever 56, as just described, drum 53 is also reversed, and thereafter during its rotation cam 63 comes into engagement with the lower end of lever 56 and throws it to the right-in Fig. 5, against the pressure of spring 78. The mechanism is so constructed and timed that the clutch will be thrown out just as the desired length of return longitudinal travel of the shaft 44 is co-mpleted. Cam 63 moves lever 56 and clutch member 20 to the neutral or disconnect-ed position, as shown in Fig. 5, bringing the mechanism to rest.
Referring now to the mechanism, connected to and cooperating with the mechanism already described, for taking the plate from the drag of the casting machine o-r other plate supply source or station, in the embodied form this is effected by imparting rotational movement to the shaft 44 and a plate carrier which is mounted on the end thereof.
In the embodied form of such means there are also incorporated devices for causing and preventing such rotational movement, and for synchronizing 'the longitudinal and rotational movement of shaft 44. As embodied, a sleeve 80 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 8l on the machine frame, and shaft 44 passes through sleeve 80, and they are connected by a feather 82 to rotate together, while the shaft is free to slide or travel longitudinally relatively to the sleeve 80. The feather 82 works in a longitudinally disposed way or slot 83 formed in the shaft 44. Sleeve 8O is shouldered at 84 to hold it in position in its bearing upon the machine frame.
During the longitudinal travel of shaft 44 sleeve 80 is at rest, but when it is desired to rotate shaft 44 to take the cast plate preparatory to conveying it to lthe trimming mechanism or station, sleeve 80 is rotated, and by reason of the connection between the sleeve and shaft 44, the shaft rotates therewith.
Referring to the embodied form of means for rotating and controlling sleeve 80, a clutch member 85 is provided, mounted loosely on the shaft 44, and having at one end thereof a clutch jaw 86 connecting with the sleeve 36, whereby clutch member 85 may be slid to and fro along the shaft 44, but will maintain its connection with sleeve 36 to be rotated thereby. 0n the' opposite end of clutch member 85 are formed sawteeth or one-way clutch teeth 87. Formed in the adjacent face of the sleeve are corresponding clutch teeth 88. Thus member will rotate in both directions with sleeve 36 but will rotate sleeve 80 only in one direction.
llfeans are provided for sliding or moving clutch member 85 to and fro along shaft 44 into and out of engagement with sleeve 80, so that at the proper time in the operation of the machine rotary motion may be imparted from sleeve 36 to sleeve 80 and thereby to shaft 44, or so that shaft 44 will have longitudinal movement only,
ln the embodied form of such means, clutch member 85 is provided with an exterior annular Igroove 89 into which project fingers or rollers 90 and 91, mounted in a vokel 92 which straddles the member 85. Yoke 92 is fixed on a longitudinally slidable j rod, which rod is mounted in bearings 94 and 95 .fined on the machine frame. The right hand end (in Fig. 1) of rod 93 is bent downwardly at 96 so to be in the path of a collar 97 fixed on shaft 44. Coiled about rod 93, between the bearing` 94 and the yoke 92 is a spring which is in compression and impels rod 93 to the right in Fig. 1 and impels clutch member 85 to the dis-engaged position.
The manner of operation of the mechanism just described is substantially as follows z- During the rotation of the sleeve 36 while shaft 44 is moving to the left in Figs. 1, 3 and 8, clutch member 85 is out of engagement with sleeve 80. As shaft 44 approaches the en-d of its longitudinal movement to the left in said figures, collar 97 engages the end 96 of rod 93, thereby moving` the rod to the left and engaging clutch member 85 with thesleeve 80.
The embodied form of means for taking the cast stereotype plate from the casting machine, or other source of plate supply comprises a saddle 105, preferably of particylindrical or hemi-cylindrical form, and preferably of a width and length substantially equal to that of the stereotype plate. The saddle is shown in the plate trans-- ferring position in Figs. 1 and 8. The saddle 105 is supported on the end of shaft 44 by connections which hold them in fixed relation while traveling` longitudinally to and fro and while Vrotating together to take the plate at the plate supplying station, but which permit rotation of the plate carrier relatively to the shaft at the trimming mechanism.
The embodied form of means for trimming the plate comprises beveled rotary trimming` saws, which trim any waste metal from the head of the plate, and cut off the tail or riser at the opposite end of the plate. Means are provided for clamping the plate upon the saddle 105, and also connections, as just stated, whereby saddle 105 with the plate thereon may be rotated in this position independently of the shaft 44. As embodied, shaft 44 is provided at its forward end with a clutch jaw member 107 fixed upon the shaft. The supporting post 106 of the plate carrier 105 has its hub 108 encircling a reduced portion 109 of shaft 44, and has a clutch jaw 110 formed thereon. The hub 108 is longitudinally slidable on the part- 109 of shaft 44 to permit the clutch jaws 107 and 110 to pass into and out of mesh. The clutch jaws are engaged during the longitudinal travel of shaft 44 and also during its rotary movement in taking the cast plate, and the clutch jaws are disengaged to permit the saddle and plate to rotate at the trimming station without rotating shaft 44. In the embodied form of said means, a spring 111 is coiled under tension between washers 112 and 113, washer 113 being held in place by nut 114 screw-threaded on the end of shaft 109. Spring 111 thus impels the clutch jaws 107 and 110 into en `sagement. A stop 150 moves hub 108 to disengage clutch jaws 107 and 110 at the trimming station, as will be later described.
The embodied form of mechanism for rotating the cast plate upon the saddle 105 past the trimmers 118 and 119, (which trimmers are fixed upon and rotated by shaft 6), and cooperating with the mechaiso and 128 in the machine frame. As embodied shaft 126 is driven from shaft 6, by means of a worm 129 fixed on shaft6, and meshingwith a worm wheel 130 on sli-aft 126. Vvlheel 130 is provided withI a'clutch j aw 131, the worm wheel 130 being loose on shaft 126.
Fixed to rotate with'shaft 126. but longitudinally slidable therealong,l is a clutch member 132, which is provided with an annular collared groove 133. A yoke 134 straddles clutch member 132, and has fingers or rollers projecting into groove 133 to move the clutch member 132 into and out of engaging position. Yoke 134 is carried on an arm 135, fixed on a shaft 136, journaled at 137 and 138 in the machine frame. Fixed to shaft 136 is a hand lever 139. i
lfleans are provided for controlling and stopping the rotation of, and for positioning the trimming mechanism, and as embodied, there is fixed to shaft 136 an arm 142, and pivotally connected to arm 142 is a rod 143 mounted yto slide longitudinally in the machine frame. Pivotally connected to the opposite end-of rod 143 is adetent lever 1447 which is pivotally mounted at 145 upon the machine frame. The upper end of lever 144 is adapted to engage with a detent notch 146 in an annularl guideway 147, formed on an extension of the worm wheel or gear wheel 124. A spring 148 is coiled about rod 143 in compression between the machine frame and a collar 149ffixed on rod 143. The spring 148 thus impels detent lever 144 into engaging position with its notch 146.
The embodied form of means for disengaging the saddle 105 from shaft 44 for separate rotation from the shaft during the trimming of the plate, as already referred to, consists of a stop 150 fixed on the shell 120, whereby carrier 105 is unclutched from shaft 44 and rests on shell 120.
The embodied form of means for taking the cast plate on to the saddle 105 and for retaining it thereon during` the trimming operation comprises a rod or stop formed along the edge of the saddle 105 which serves to take the plate on to the saddle during the rotation thereof at the plate castingA niachine. To hold thev cast plate u pon the saddle 105 during the trimming operation, straps 156 and 157 of semi-circular form are provided, pivotally or otherwise connected at one end to the shell 120. They are provided at the opposite end withl means for raising them to admit the plate Vand for then drawing-them down upon the plate to hold it in position during` the rotation of the mechanism, Said means are preferably automatically operated, and as shown the ends of the straps 156 and 157 are connected, respectively,'to arms 158 and 159, fixed to a shaft 160. Shaft 160 is journaled in bearings 16'1 and 162' upon the shell 120, and also in the interior of gear wheel 124. i On the exterior side of gear wheel 124 there is fixed to shaft 160 a box cam 164, which serves to oscillate the shaft at the beginning ofthe rotation of the mechanism to fasten the straps 156 and 157 over the plate, and at the end of the rotation to oscillate shaft 160 to raise the straps free from the trimmed plate preparatory to ther removal of the plate from the saddle 105. Pins 165 and 166 xedfon the frame operate box cam 164, that is, when wheel 124 rotates, one of the pins enters the cam groove, and the inclination of the cam is such, that in passing the pin it is correspondingly rocked and thereby oscillates shaft 160. On the reverse movement of the wheel 124, the cam 164 is rocked in the opposite direction and oscillates shaft 160 in the opposite direction. n
The manner of operation of the mechanism just described will be clear from the foregoing, and will be summarized but briefly as follows When shaft 44 is at the right hand end of its travel in Figs. 1 and 3 and 13, clutch jaws 107 and 110 are disengaged, and saddle 105 is held in position by the shell 120. As shaft 44 begins its longitudinal movement toward the left, clutch jaws 107' and 110 engage. and` saddle 105 is thereby held in fixed relation angularly with respectrto shaft 44 so as to rotate therewith. Saddle 105is carried by shaft 44 above the drag 170 of the casting machine. r1he casting machine shown in Fig. 8, is of the form illustrated, described and claimed in (3o-pending application Ser. No. 408,203, filed September 4, 1920, but it will be understood that the invention may be used. with other casting machines.

In Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 the saddle 105 is shown above the plate 171, which is resting in the drag 17 0. rI`he saddle 105 is then rotated in the manner and by the mechanism previously described herein. Various stages or positions ofthe saddle 105 are indicated diagramn'iatically in Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12, the direction of movement of the parts being indicated by the arrows. In Fig. 10 theV bar 1 55 is shown engaging the plate, in Fig. 1 1 the plate is shown partly removed by thel rotation of the saddle 105, the bar 1 55 carrying the plate with the saddle. In Fig. 12 the saddle is shown back in the position-of Figs. 8i and 9, but with the plate 171 supported thereon.

The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, but changes may be made therein within the scope of the accompanying claims without departing from the principlesvof the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim is 1. A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination means for casting a plate including a drag, a trimming mechanism, a plate carrier movable to and fro between the casting means and trimming mechanism, means for taking the plate from the drag on to the carrier, and means for effecting relative movement of the carrier and trimming mechanism to trim the plate. A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a cylindricallyshaped plate carrier movable to and fro between a source of plate supply anda trimming mechanism, means for rotating the carrier at the take a plate on to the carrier, and means lfor effecting relative movement of the carrier and trimming mechanism to trim the plate.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a cylindrically shaped plate carrier movable to and fro between a source of plate supply and a trimming mechanism, means for rotating the carrier at the source of supply to source of supply to take a plate on tothe carrier, and means for v rotating the plate carrier at mechanism to trim the plate.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means for rotating the shaft while the plate carrier is at the source of supply.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means rotating upon the shaft while it is longitudinally at rest and while the plate carrier is at the trimming mechamsm.
16. A machine for operating upon stercotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming` mechanism, and means for rotating the shaft while it is longitudinally at rest and while the plate carrier is at the source of supply.

A machine for operating upon stereo- .type plates includingY in combination a shaft and a cylindrically shaped plate carrier supin combination a ported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and devices for rotating the shaft and late carrier together or one independently of the other.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaftand a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of platesupply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means for rotating the plate carrier and .shaft together at one end of the longitudinal travel thereof.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means for effecting relative rotation between the plate carrier and shaft at one end of the longitudinal travel thereof.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a sha-ft and va plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming'mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between lthe source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means for rotating the shaft and plate carrier together in talring a plate at the source of supply.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mecha-- nism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means for effecting relative movement of the shaft and plate carrier at the trimming mechanism.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudilnally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, and means for rotating the plate carrier relatively7 to the shaft at the trimming mechanism.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier supported thereon, a source of plate supply, a trimming mechanism, means for moving the shaft longitudinally to move the carrier to and fro between the source of supply and the trimming mechanism, means for disengaging the plate carrier from the shaft at the trimming v station and for rotating the plate carrier to trim the plates.
29. A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier thereon longitudinally movable to and fro between two plate stations, means operating automatically to reverse the travel thereof at one of said stations.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier thereon longitudinally movable to and fro between two plate stations, hand operated means for starting said longitudinal movement, means operating` automatically to reverse the travel thereof at one of said stations.

A machine for operating upon stereotype plates including in combination a shaft and a plate carrier thereon, attachable and detachable from the shaft, and longitudinally movable to and fro between two plate stations, and means opera-ting automatically to reverse the travel thereof at one of said stations.
