Description
Sept. 4, 1923. 1,466,801 W. E. MORGAN FASTENER FOR BASKET COVERS Filed Aug. 9, 1922 Patented Sept. 4, 1923.
UNHTED FASTENER FOR BASKET COVERS.
Application filed August 9, 1922.
T 0 a]? whomif may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. MonoAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Rhea and State of Tennessee. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Basket Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a fastener for the covers of baskets and like containers, which requires for its use no special devices forming a part of the basket or basket cover, but is adapted for fastening the covers of all baskets having a top hoop or the like projecting from the side of the basket.
The invention consists, broadly, in a rigid member adapted to be carried by a basket cover, and a bendable member carried by said rigid member, said bendable member so formed as to engage a basket and bendable over said rigid member, as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several fi res of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a basket and cover with my fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the fastener strip and fastener detached. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken in the plane of line 33, Fig. 1.
As a means of illustrating the application of my invention I have shown an ordinary bushel basket 1 having a top hoop 2, handles 3 and a cover 4. The type of cover shown is provided with a to cross-member 5 of a length greater than the diameter of the cover and having its ends 6 extending through the handles 3.
In order to effectively utilize my fasteners in connection with a basket cover I provide a fastener strip 7 of a length sufiicient to span the basket cover, and at each end of this strip I attach one of my fasteners.
The fastener comprises a rigid plate 8 adapted to be attached to the fastener strip by nails or the like 9 and provided with apertures 10 through which pass the ends or lower portions 11 of a substantially U shaped bendable wire member, the upper portion 12 of which extends above the plate 8. The ends 11 of the wire member terminate in upturned prongs 13. The wire member is slidable in the apertures 10.
Assuming. that the cover has been placed Serial No. 580,780.
upon the basket. and that my fasteners are to be used, as shown in Fig. 22 mounted upon a fastener strip, the method of adjusting the fasteners for securing the cover is as follows :The fastener strip is placed across the top of the basket cover (as shownin Fig. 1.), then the bendable members are pushed downward through the apertures 10 until the prongs 13 may be engaged beneath the top hoop 2. Then, while exerting downward pressure upon the plates 8, the upper portions 12 of the bendable members are pulled upward, so that the prongs 13 take a firm hold in the hoop 2. and the portions 12 are then bent outwardly and downwardly to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 thus securely fastening the strip 7 down upon the basket cover 3 and hence securing the cover upon the basket. T remove the cover the fasteners may be released by bending the wire members back to their original shape or by merely cutting them.
In the type of cover illustrated, where the cross-member 5 is used in connection with the handles 4 for positioning the cover upon the basket. only one fastener strip 7 is necessary to secure the cover, but, if the member 5 is not used, then two fastener strips 7, arranged across the cover at right angles to each other, are desirable.
I have shown and described my invention as applied to a basket, but it is obvious that it may be used in connection with other like containers, such as boxes, and the like.
Sheet metal or other material might be substituted for the wire used in forming the bendable members. However, whatever material is used for forming these members, it must be of such stiffness as to remain bent in cover-fastening position once it has been so bent, without liability to accidental displacement.
Obviously the invention is not limited to a U-shaped bendable member, but includes a bendable member having one or more ends adapted to engage the body of the container and cooperating with a suitably perforated late. p Furthermore, the fasteners may be used independently of the fastener strip 7, in
crates, cases, bales which case the plates 8 would be attached directly to the cover, whether it be the cover of a basket, box, crate or other container.
It is possible also to reverse the positions of the fasteners, or, in other words, to attach no detachable parts to becomelost or miss placed.
Another advantage is that it can be manufactured so cheaply that when once used it may be discarded. However, it is capable of being used more than once.
Another advantage resides in its simplicity of construction and ease of manipulation. It will be understood, therefore, that I do not consider my invention as limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and *described as various changes may be made in construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is 1. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprising a ri id member supported by the cover, and a bendable member slidably carried by said rigid member and formed for engagement with the basket.
2. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprising a rigid member carried by the cover, and a bendable member slidably carried by said rigid member and pronged for engagement with a hoop of the basket, said bendable member after. enga ement with said hoop being bent over sai rigid member to fasten the cover to the basket.
3. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprising a fastener strip, a rigid member affixed at each end thereof, and bendable members carried by said ri id members, said strip adapted to span abas et cover, and said bendable members formed for engagement with the basket and adapted after such engagement to be bent over said rigid members to secure the cover to the basket.
4;. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprising a fastener strip, a rigid plate attached to each end thereof, and a bendable member carried by and extending through each of said plates, said strip adapted to span a basket cover and said bendable members formed for engagement with the basket and adapted after such engagement to be bent over the ends of said plates to secure the cover to the basket.
5. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprising a plate, and a wire extending therethrough and slidable with respect thereto, said plates-adapted to be affixed upon a basket cover ,and said wire formed for engagement with a hoop of the basket and adapted after such engagement to be bent over said plate to secure the cover to the basket. 6. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprising a plate provided with apertures, a U-shaped wire having lower portions extending through said apertures and slidable therein and formed into rongs, said plate adapted to cooperate wit a basket caver and said prongs adapted to engage the basket, the upper portion of said wire adaptedto be bent over said plate.
7. A fastener for basket covers and the like, comprisin a fastener strip adapted to rest upon an span a basket cover, a plate attached adjacent each end of said strip and provided with apertures, and a U-shaped wire carried by each of said plates and hav ing its lower portions extendin through said apertures and terminating in prongs, said prongs adapted to engage a basket and the upper portions of said wires adapted to be bent over the ends of said plates.
8. A fastener for basket covers and the WALTER E. MORGAN.
