JOSEPH s. DUNCAN, orv vici-ricalca inmitoisf v FOLLOW/EB FOR FILING DRAWERS.
Application led ,February 9, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Josnrrr-S. DUNoaN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of @ook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-V ful Improvements in Followers for Filing Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionvhas for its object to provide a strong and substantial follower for filing drawers which can be easily moved to adjusted position and then locked securely to support cards, files or other material in a desired manner.
And a further object of the invention is to provide an efficient lock that it will not yield to theV pressure'of the cards, files or other material supported thereby in the drawer'fbut which can be easily and quickly released to permit readjustmentof the follower.
ln the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a selected embodiment of the invention, and referring thereto- Y Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a drawer equipped lower;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the f line 2`2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; s
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 4-4 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 5 shows the follower in locked position.
l have illustrated the invention in a drawer adapted for holding cards of a card system, but it will be understood thatV the ers for holding files or other material.` The drawer 6 is shown made of metal with aV flange T depending from the upper edge of each side wall and spaced therefrom to forni channels 8.
The follower comprises a body member 9k forsecurelyv holding the follower in adjustedV position so vof the v cam lever and withmy improved fol-' shown in ing lever is swung down invention ma'T be employed 1n larger drawserial No. 535,152.
spring are bent at l5 landengage withhole's 16 ln the end. The -springslwill restrain the follower against free ,movement iny the drawer when it is notloclred and they also hold the follower in upright position, as shownv in Fig. V l. Th ner of each end ll is the followe'r'may be the' inclined edges 17 of the channels, to' the cards inthe drawer and the insertion or removal of the cards. y l 'y 1 'Y The body member is also provided with upstanding bearing projections 18`located adjacent to the Vopposing faces offthe` depending flanges 7, 7.' Levers 19 are :pivoted at\l9 onthe body member and carry jaws 'projectupward into the channels which" e upper forward cor-.-
top wal-l of the channel and thev vendsofthe i facilitate inspectionof -f upper edge of the other lever and forms a.
bearing for a Vcam lever 22 which is pivoted at 22 to the body member. A stop 23 Von the body member limits thel opening movement lever is arranged to engage one of the jaw levers. The to form bearings disposed opposite the jaws, as shown in Fig. 3
n the form illustrated both the drawer and the follower are made out of sheet metal and theparts can stamped to fit closely without interfering with theY adjustment of the follower. In practice, the follower is-free to move when the locking lever Vis -in upright position, as 2. After the follower has projections 18 are bent` at 184V so a lug 22 on the cani 'i be very accurately cut or V been adjusted to desired position the locki y to horizontal position, thereby depressing the overlapping ends of the jaw levers and forcing the jaws Athe jaws clamp the flanges against the bearing projections and the leverage afforded by the levers Y19. lV hen the locking lever is inward and clamping the flanges lbetween 'v locking is l' f swung. to open upright position the jaws l will be sufliciently released to enable the free adjustment of the follower;
I reserve the right to make all suoli changes in the form, constructionY and proportion of part'svof the invention herein disclosed, and to vary the materials, V.as may be e body member7 required for different pnrposeajso far as the same fall within the scope of the following claims, and desire to have it understood that the form or the'invention herein shown and described is merely one of a number within the scope of the invention.
l claim: l, l
1. A follower for tiling drawers comprising a body member havingnpstanding bear ing. projeetions, tlevers pivotally mounted on-the' body member at the base or said projections, clamping-j jaws on said levers extending; upward in cooperative relation with said Yjnojections, and inea-ns for operating` the levers. n Y
2. The combination of a drawer having;` franges on its side walls, a follower adapted torslide in saidrdrawer and comprising a Vbody member, jaws pivotally mounted on said body7 the ilanges and to clamp said flanges between themselves and portions of the body member, andmeans for operating Asaid jaws.
3. The combination of a drawer having flanges on its side walls, a follower adapted toelide in member and operating between sai-d drawer and comprisinga Vflanges on its side the side walls vof the drawer levers pivotally mounted on themselves and `portions of the body memi ber, and means for operating said levers.
4i. The combination ofa drawer havingv to slidey in said ldrawer' and having upstand ing,- projections adjacent said flanges, levers pivotally mounted on the follower and hav- -j'adws projecting into Jthe spaces between the side walls and the flanges of the drawerv to clamp the flanges between themselves and said projeetionsv and means` for operating said levers. Y, Y
5. The combination of a. drawer having4 lianges on its side walls, a follower adapted to slide in said drawer and having upstanding projections located adjacent to and between sai-d flanges, horizontally disposed levers pivotally mounted on the follower and having; jaws Vprojecting upward into the walls, a follower adapted spaces between the side wallsand the flanges to clamp the flanges between themselves and said npstandmgy projections, and' means' on the follower to engage and-operatelsaidlevers.
