To all whom may concern:

Be it known that I, LEON IVIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina,

bringing together the separated ends of a wire or for tightening a wire prior to further stapling, in order to take up slack.

A still further object is to provide a device which shall be especially effective for,

the purpose intended and which shall include a main bar or lever, an arm pivoted thereto and provided with a wire engaging element, and a second wire engaging element pivoted to the lever and extending beyond the end thereof, whereby the separated ends of the wire may be brought into proper relative position for splicing.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, it being understood that modification may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, Figure 2 is a top plan view, and Figures 3 and 4 are detail views of the arms for gripping the wire.

The main bar or lever is designated 10, and may be of uniform cross section, as shown or may be tapered toward one end. This lever is provided with a hook 11 at one end, and near the opposite end is provided with an aperture 12 receiving the offset end 13 of an arm 14.

Arm 14 is deflected at 15, and is provided with a wire engaging device, or hook 16. The end 13 has swivel connection with the lever.

Another arm 14: is provided with a curved portionl? and with a hook 18. This arm is further provided with an ofiset 19, a straight portion 20, and a portion 21 at Serial No. 550,331.

right angles with member 20. This end portion 21 fits into a hole or aperture 23 in bar 10, and at about the point shown, that is spaced a reasonable distance from the point at which the shorter arm is mounted.

In operation, the longer arm is detached, if required, by withdrawing the end portion 21 from aperture 23, and hook 18 is caused to engage one of the wires at a suitable distance from the end thereof. The other end of the "wire to be spliced is then engaged by hook 16; The operator grasps the longer arm, exert tension on the wires held thereby and places the end 21 in aperture 23. The lever 10 is now operated for throwing the elements into the position 7 shown in Figure 2,. and the wire is in condition for splicing.

These hooks are to be formed for engaging either barbed wire or plain wire, or wire netting, and it will occasionally happen that in splicing a wire an additional short length will be required. If it is merely desired to tighten a wire which has not been broken, this is done by using bar 10 as a lever, operating against the fence' post as a fulcrum. The hooks are caused to engage the wire in any manner suitable for effecting the purpose intended that is holding the wire taut while restapling.

Having thus described the invention, I claim: I

A device of the class described, comprising a lever, a hook connected with one end thereof, a short arm including a hook having swivel connection with the opposite end" of the lever, the arm being positioned to rest against the side of the lever when the wire is tensioned, a longer arm including a hook having detachable and swivel connec tion with the lever at a point spaced from the end thereof last named, said longer arm including an ofiset portion intermediate of r the ends extending alongside the lever and parallel therewith, and then curved around and beyond the end of the lever, into position for holding one end of the wire in approximate alignment with the end held by the other hook when the wire is under tension.
